Generate Screenshots of Indian News Article Pages with Java Playwright

A practical Java Playwright guide to capturing the viewport, full article page, or a selected element, with notes on selectors and output.

Use Playwright for Java to open an Indian news article URL and save either the visible viewport, the full scrollable page, or a specific element. The capture calls are the same for news pages as for other websites; the publisher’s page structure, consent prompts, and access behavior must be checked on the actual page.

Capture an article page and save a screenshot

The example below follows Playwright’s documented Java workflow: create Playwright, launch WebKit, open a page, navigate to the article URL, then save a PNG. Replace the example URL with an article you are authorized to access. This is a code example, not a claim that a particular Indian news page was tested. See the Playwright Java screenshot guide and the Java Page API example.

import com.microsoft.playwright.*;
import java.nio.file.Paths;

public class ArticleScreenshot {
  public static void main(String[] args) {
    try (Playwright playwright = Playwright.create()) {
      Browser browser = playwright.webkit().launch();
      BrowserContext context = browser.newContext();
      Page page = context.newPage();
      page.navigate("https://example.com/article");
      page.screenshot(new Page.ScreenshotOptions()
          .setPath(Paths.get("article.png")));
      browser.close();
    }
  }
}

The URL is illustrative; it is not an Indian news article. The example explicitly closes the browser, while the try-with-resources block closes the Playwright instance.

Choose what to capture

Visible viewport

The basic page.screenshot(...) call captures the current viewport. The screenshot option fullPage defaults to false, so leave it unset for this scope. See Playwright’s screenshot options.

Full scrollable page

Set fullPage to true to capture the full scrollable page as if it were displayed on a very tall screen. This produces one tall screenshot, not a sequence of viewport-sized images.

page.screenshot(new Page.ScreenshotOptions()
    .setPath(Paths.get("article-full.png"))
    .setFullPage(true));

A single page element

Use a locator’s screenshot method when you need just an element, such as an article body or headline. The selector must match the live page’s markup; .header in the documentation is only an example, not a known selector for any Indian publisher.

page.locator(".article-body").screenshot(
    new Locator.ScreenshotOptions()
        .setPath(Paths.get("article-body.png")));

Inspect the target page and replace .article-body with a suitable selector. If it does not match an element, the capture cannot target the intended content.

Screenshot bytes instead of a file

Call page.screenshot() without a path to get a byte[]. This is useful when your application needs to post-process the image or pass it to another component instead of writing it directly to disk.

byte[] image = page.screenshot();

These capture forms are documented in the Java screenshot guide.

Adapt the workflow to a specific news page

  1. Choose the URL and browser engine. The documented Java example uses WebKit. The cited documentation does not establish which engine best renders any particular Indian publisher’s page.
  2. Navigate to the article. Call page.navigate(articleUrl) before capturing, following the documented pattern. Decide separately how your application should handle navigation failures or pages that do not finish loading.
  3. Choose the capture scope. Use a normal page screenshot for the viewport, .setFullPage(true) for the full scrollable page, a locator screenshot for one element, or the no-path call for image bytes.
  4. Verify selectors on the real page. For element capture, inspect the page and choose a locator that matches its actual markup. Do not assume a selector from an example works across publishers.
  5. Choose an explicit output path. The examples save PNG files. Keep the filename extension consistent with the output you intend to produce.

The cited API documentation describes these operations; it does not establish publisher-specific access rules, page selectors, or capture reliability for Indian news sites.

Common implementation problems

  • The file is not the full article. A regular page screenshot captures the viewport. Add .setFullPage(true) when you need the full scrollable page.
  • An element screenshot fails or targets the wrong content. Check that the locator matches the current page’s markup. A documentation example selector is not a publisher-specific guarantee.
  • The expected output file is missing. Confirm that the screenshot call includes .setPath(Paths.get("...")) and that the destination is writable by the Java process.
  • The result differs across pages or engines. The documentation shows API usage but does not compare browser rendering for Indian publisher sites. Verify the chosen engine and capture scope against the page you need to process.

ScreenshotNeo offers a website screenshot API and MCP server. A single request can return a screenshot; for example, this cURL command saves a WebP response. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com/article -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server includes tools for AI agents to take screenshots, get page information, and capture PDFs. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the full-page option create several screenshots?

No. Playwright describes it as one capture of the full scrollable page, as if shown on a very tall screen.

Does the `.article-body` selector work on Indian news sites?

It is illustrative only. Inspect the target page and use a locator that matches its markup.
