When Apache POI code sets every cell, row, style, and formula, report layout becomes entangled with application logic. A template-based approach moves the layout and formatting into an editable workbook; Java or Kotlin code supplies data and writes the finished file. Jxls is one JVM option for this pattern, while direct Apache POI remains appropriate when code needs explicit control over workbook structure.
How does template-based Excel report generation work?
The workbook acts as the report’s layout: it can hold headings, formatting, expressions, and instructions for repeating data. Your application prepares the values and output destination, then a template engine fills the workbook. This separation can make layout changes possible in Excel without rewriting cell-by-cell code, but it also means the workbook itself becomes something the team must maintain.

Jxls documents this pattern for Java applications, accepting either POJOs or a Map<String, Object> as input. Its Java API can also be called from Kotlin through JVM interoperability; the cited examples are Java-focused, not a separately validated Kotlin-specific API. The Jxls project describes the library as a template-based report-generation tool.

The basic flow is: create a workbook template, prepare a map containing the data, build a template filler, and write the generated report. The official guide uses employee records and a report.xlsx output as an example. It supports passing a template through an InputStream, URL, File, or filename, followed by a call to fill(data, output).
#1 Best Overall
- report writing template for law enforcement
- Prepare the workbook. Put headings, cell formats, expressions, and repeat-region instructions in an Excel template.
- Prepare application data. Supply a map or Java objects with the values the expressions will read.
- Build the filler and generate the file. Load the template, create a Jxls template filler, then fill it with the data and an output stream or destination.
The Jxls getting-started guide demonstrates a jx:area note to identify a template area and a jx:each note to repeat a region. Cell expressions such as ${e.name} refer to properties of the current object; the template can also supply date and currency formatting. See the Jxls Getting started guide and Jxls tutorial for its template structure and examples.
Keep dependency coordinates out of copy-and-paste instructions until you have confirmed the release you intend to use: the Jxls getting-started page displays version 3.2.0, while the repository README result lists org.jxls:jxls-poi:3.1.0. Those displayed versions conflict, so verify current artifact metadata and keep the Jxls modules aligned for your chosen release.

When should you use templates instead of direct Apache POI?
Jxls is built around template filling and integrates with Apache POI; direct POI gives the application more explicit control over workbook operations. Neither approach is universally preferable, and the cited sources do not establish a speed winner. Decide based on who owns layout changes, how much workbook control is needed, and what the real report workload requires.

| Decision factor | Template binding with Jxls | Direct Apache POI |
|---|---|---|
| Layout ownership | Layout, formatting, expressions, and repeat instructions live in the workbook template. | Workbook structure and operations are managed explicitly in application code. |
| Common fit | Repeated regions and reports whose layout should be editable in Excel. | Reports needing direct workbook manipulation or specific spreadsheet operations. |
| Documented capabilities | Jxls documents data binding, template filling, and multi-sheet options in its builder guide. | Apache POI examples cover formatting, formulas, conditional formats, panes, and grouping. |
| Performance | No comparative benchmark established by the cited sources; measure the actual workload. | No comparative benchmark established by the cited sources; measure the actual workload. |
For lower-level tasks, Apache POI’s spreadsheet examples show operations such as formatting and formulas. Its DataFormatter API documents rendering stored values in display form, including dates, currencies, percentages, decimals, phone numbers, and ZIP codes. A separate Kotlin-and-Java project, TBEG, describes features including repeated data, variable substitution, images, merging, and formula adjustment; these are the project’s own feature claims, not an independent compatibility or performance evaluation.

What should you verify before relying on a generated report?
Formula behavior, recalculation, sheet copying, workbook-feature preservation, and memory use can depend on the library release and the actual workbook. Treat a generated file as an output artifact to validate, not assume that a successful fill guarantees the target spreadsheet application will display every feature as intended.
- Release and API: Confirm the dependency version and check the matching documentation for builder options and behavior.
- Data boundaries: Generate reports with empty data, typical data, and a representative large dataset; check output and resource use in the deployment environment.
- Formulas: Verify formula results in the target spreadsheet software. The builder guide describes an option to ask POI to recalculate formulas before saving; confirm its availability for the version you use.
- Multiple sheets: The builder guide says its POI sheet creator clones the source sheet by default since version 3.1, and that behavior can be changed. Confirm the exact release’s behavior and output for your template.
- Workbook features: Open the generated file in the spreadsheet software your readers use and inspect formatting, formulas, and any specialized features the report depends on.
Formula details on the Jxls formula reference apply to Jxls 2.x, not automatically to Jxls 3. That legacy reference describes formula processing and explicit evaluation/recalculation options; verify current APIs rather than copying older calls into a Jxls 3 implementation. The Jxls 2.x documentation is useful for recognizing that version boundary.
