To generate an invoice preview image, render your checked invoice data into HTML, display it in a browser or in-app web view, then capture that rendered page as a PNG, JPEG, or WebP only if your app needs a raster artifact. Keep this visual step separate from GST e-invoice registration: an HTML preview or screenshot does not submit invoice particulars to an Invoice Registration Portal (IRP), create an Invoice Reference Number (IRN), or produce the IRP-signed JSON and QR code.
Separate invoice data, visual preview, and GST registration
Use one validated invoice record as the source for each output, rather than treating the HTML template as the invoice itself. A practical flow is:

- Build and validate the invoice record according to the transaction and applicable rules.
- Render the record into HTML using a template.
- Show the HTML in the app’s browser or web view so the user can inspect it.
- If the product needs a saved or shareable raster preview, capture the rendered HTML as an image.
- For a supplier required to e-invoice, send the specified invoice particulars through the applicable IRP workflow and use the returned signed data for the registered e-invoice output.
This separation is an implementation recommendation: GSTN describes registration and signed-data return as distinct from presentation, while HTML preview is a rendering pattern. It avoids confusing a polished preview with evidence that an invoice has been registered.

Section 31 of the CGST Act describes when registered suppliers of taxable goods issue a tax invoice and includes description, quantity, value, tax charged, and prescribed particulars. Rule 46 of the CGST Rules lists particulars including supplier name, address and GSTIN, a consecutive serial number, date, and recipient details as applicable. What applies depends on the transaction and rules in force; displaying fields in a template does not by itself establish compliance. See the CBIC CGST Act, section 31 and CBIC CGST Rules, Rule 46.

Keep calculations and authoritative values in the invoice record, not in presentation-only markup. The template should format those values for reading; it should not silently change tax calculations, invoice numbering, or the underlying transaction data.
Render HTML and capture an image
Build a responsive HTML preview
Render values from the invoice record into a semantic HTML document, escaping user-controlled text and formatting amounts consistently. Use CSS to make the preview legible at the intended in-app viewport. For a long invoice, let content flow across the page instead of shrinking text until it becomes unreadable. If the user can inspect the invoice on a small screen, provide a screen layout distinct from any print layout where appropriate.
Keep logos, fonts, and other assets available to the renderer, and decide how missing assets should appear. A capture service or browser may not resolve assets that are inaccessible, blocked, or dependent on a session unless the required access and loading behavior are provided. The available documentation for an invoice-rendering API demonstrates HTML preview and separate PDF output, but does not establish a best HTML-to-image library or guarantee matching output across mobile platforms: OptoSoft API documentation.

Display it before generating a raster artifact
Use the platform’s browser or web view to show the HTML preview. Capture an image only if a feature needs an image file—for example, a thumbnail or a visual share artifact. HTML itself remains preferable when the user needs selectable text, responsive layout, or interaction; a PDF is generally the more suitable output when the goal is a printable document. Choose based on the actual use, not on an assumption that one output is inherently more accurate.
Before selecting a browser capture library or service, evaluate the behavior your app requires. The cited sources do not provide head-to-head results, so these are selection questions rather than claims of measured quality:
- Does the output need to be an in-app HTML view, a raster image, or a PDF?
- How does the layout behave on different screen sizes and with long invoices?
- Can the renderer apply the print styles the invoice needs?
- How are fonts and image assets loaded, especially when access requires authentication?
- For a notified supplier’s e-invoice, can the final document use the actual IRP-returned signed data rather than a locally invented substitute?
Do not confuse a preview image with an e-invoice
Under Rule 48(4), the notified class of registered persons prepares an invoice with specified FORM GST INV-01 particulars and obtains an IRN by uploading information through the common portal. Rule 48(5) says an invoice issued by a person subject to sub-rule (4) in another manner is not treated as an invoice. This requirement is not a blanket rule for every Indian billing-app user. Check the current rules and your business’s applicability before deciding whether this workflow applies. CBIC CGST Rules, Rule 48.

After successful registration, GSTN says the IRP returns signed e-invoice JSON containing the IRN and QR code. A locally generated or decorative QR image is not a substitute for that returned signed QR code. IRIS IRP describes the standard B2B QR code as digitally signed and carrying selected invoice information, the IRN, and generation date; consult current official guidance for operational details. Applicability can change with notifications, thresholds, and exclusions. The IRIS IRP6 portal currently summarizes phased e-invoice applicability for companies with aggregate annual turnover (AATO) of Rs. 10 crore and more; treat that as the portal’s current summary, not a replacement for checking the notification and current official guidance relevant to your case.
Use the right output for the next step
For an in-app visual check, display HTML; for a raster preview, capture that rendered view; for printing an e-invoice, use the signed data returned by the IRP. GSTN’s FAQ says signed JSON can be converted to PDF and printed, and that printing the IRN itself is optional because it is embedded in the QR code. The preview image remains a presentation artifact, not the registration record.

Troubleshooting preview and capture failures
- The image is blank: Confirm the page finished rendering before capture and that the invoice content is present in the rendered HTML. If the page depends on JavaScript or delayed data, wait for the relevant content rather than capturing immediately.
- Fonts or logos are missing: Check that asset URLs are reachable from the renderer and that authentication, cross-origin restrictions, or network rules are not preventing access. Consider a clear fallback font and logo treatment.
- The long invoice is clipped: Verify the capture dimensions or full-page behavior and inspect how the template handles content that spans multiple screens or pages. Do not assume a viewport screenshot includes the full invoice.
- The screenshot differs from the preview: Compare viewport size, loaded fonts and assets, color mode, and timing. The sources do not establish pixel-identical rendering across browsers or mobile platforms.
- The image contains a cookie banner or popup: Decide whether the page’s consent behavior is part of the intended capture. A screenshot tool with configurable banner and popup handling may help, but verify its behavior with your page.
- The QR code looks valid but the e-invoice is not registered: A locally created QR graphic does not prove IRP registration. Use the IRP-returned signed JSON and QR code where the e-invoice rules apply.
FAQ
Can I print an e-invoice?
Yes. GSTN says that once the IRP returns signed JSON, it can be converted to PDF and printed, if required. GSTN E-Invoicing FAQs.
Do I need to print the IRN on the invoice?
GSTN says printing the IRN itself is optional because it is embedded in the QR code. Use the IRP-returned QR code, not a decorative replacement. GSTN E-Invoicing FAQs.
