A site can generate it from the same structured FAQ content it displays to readers, reducing duplicate editing and the risk that the markup drifts from the page. The key requirement is that every marked-up question and answer accurately matches visible content—not that it lives in a particular CMS field.
Can I generate FAQ schema from my page content?
Yes. Google supports JSON-LD added dynamically to a rendered page, including through JavaScript or CMS widgets. That means your site can build the JSON-LD from the FAQ blocks it already uses to render the page. Google recommends JSON-LD when your setup allows it, but it does not prescribe a particular CMS data model. See Google’s guidance on generating structured data with JavaScript and its introduction to structured data.

The practical benefit is consistency and simpler maintenance: editors can update the visible FAQ once, and the site can derive the structured representation from that content. This does not promise better rankings or a search result enhancement.
Do I need a separate FAQ schema field in my CMS?
No. A separate field is an implementation choice. Generate markup from existing rich text when it contains explicit, reliably structured question-and-answer blocks. A separate field can be reasonable when the rich text is irregular or cannot be parsed safely, but it creates a second representation that someone must keep in sync.
| Consideration | Generate from FAQ blocks | Maintain a separate field |
|---|---|---|
| Consistency | Can reduce drift when markup is derived from the content displayed on the page. | Can drift if editors update the visible FAQ but not the schema field. |
| Editorial workflow | Editors manage the FAQ content in one place. | Editors or developers maintain a second representation. |
| Content structure | Works best with stable, explicit question-and-answer blocks. | May suit content that cannot be parsed reliably from existing rich text. |
| Rendering and quality checks | Requires checking that the generated JSON-LD appears in the rendered page and remains valid. | Also requires checking page output and keeping the separate field synchronized. |
| Ongoing ownership | Engineering owns extraction and serialization logic; editorial teams own answer quality. | Teams must agree who maintains both the visible content and the schema field. |
Google’s rules focus on accurate markup and rendered content, not whether schema is stored separately. Choose the approach your team can maintain without mismatches.
How do I add FAQPage JSON-LD dynamically?
Use the same structured FAQ blocks that produce the visible page content as the source for JSON-LD. Server-rendering the object is a straightforward option; client-side generation is also supported if the markup is present in the DOM after rendering. These are implementation choices, not separate Google requirements.

- Identify explicit FAQ blocks. Use content fields or block types that distinguish a complete question from its answer. Do not infer FAQ entries from arbitrary headings or paragraphs.
- Render the reader-facing FAQ. Make sure each question and answer included in the markup is actually visible on the page.
- Build JSON-LD from those same values. Normalize whitespace without changing meaning, and use a JSON serializer rather than concatenating strings manually. This safely handles quotes, punctuation, and other characters.
- Include the generated object in page output. Prefer server-rendered output when convenient. If generating it in the browser, confirm it is added to the rendered DOM and available for inspection.
- Regenerate on content edits. The structured data should change whenever the displayed FAQ changes; do not let cached or separately maintained markup preserve an outdated answer.
Google’s General Structured Data Guidelines require a true representation of page content and say not to mark up information that is not visible to readers.
How should I validate generated FAQ markup?
Check both the JSON-LD and the page after rendering. Google recommends testing structured data and inspecting how Google sees a page; its JavaScript structured-data guidance describes testing dynamically generated markup.

- Compare every generated question and answer with the visible FAQ, including after an editor changes the content.
- Run the Rich Results Test where applicable to catch structured-data issues.
- Inspect a deployed URL with Search Console’s URL Inspection tool to check the rendered page.
- Test empty FAQ content, HTML entities, quotes, punctuation, and edits to existing answers so edge cases do not produce malformed or stale output.
A successful technical test confirms neither that a result feature will appear nor that the page is eligible for one.
Does FAQ schema still show in Google results?
Expect limited visibility. In its August 2023 announcement, Google said, “FAQ (from FAQPage structured data) rich results will only be shown for well-known, authoritative government and health websites.” Google also said the feature “will no longer be shown regularly” for other sites. Read the August 2023 announcement on FAQ and HowTo rich results for the policy.

Correct markup is not a guarantee even where a search feature may be available. Google’s guideline states: “Google does not guarantee that your structured data will show up in search results, even if your page is marked up correctly according to the Rich Results Test.” Structured data can describe page content to machines, but this implementation should be justified by accurate, maintainable data—not a promise of a particular display or traffic outcome.

When is FAQPage the right type?
Use FAQPage for a site-authored FAQ containing questions and answers. Do not use QAPage as a substitute: Google defines QAPage for a page focused on one question with user-submitted answers, and excludes site-authored FAQ pages and pages with multiple questions. See Google’s QAPage documentation.

What quality controls should automation include?
Automation only helps if the content remains useful and accurate. Restrict extraction to complete FAQ pairs that are shown to users, preserve the meaning of answers, and make it easy to review what is emitted when content formats change. Google’s guidance on generative AI content emphasizes accuracy, quality, and relevance, and warns that scaled pages without user value may violate its scaled-content-abuse policy. Automatically producing markup does not make thin or misleading FAQ content acceptable.
