It can read small text, identify objects, describe colors and surroundings, and give spoken cues to reframe the camera. Built alongside the blind and low-vision community, it illustrates a valuable role for AI: making information in the immediate environment easier to access. It is assistance, not a navigation or safety system.
What Guided Vision does
Guided Vision is a camera-based feature inside Gemini Live. A user shares the phone’s live camera view, asks for help, and receives spoken responses. Unlike a single caption, the conversation can continue with follow-up questions and camera guidance. Google announced the feature on October 1, 2026, describing it as built alongside the blind and low-vision community. Google’s launch announcement describes the product; it is not independent validation of its performance.

Examples of help Google describes
- Read or translate small labels, signs, menus, and appliance displays.
- Identify objects and help locate them, such as pepper in a spice cabinet or a fallen earbud.
- Describe colors, shapes, patterns, or clothing.
- Give audio descriptions of a room or other surroundings.
- Offer spoken feedback to help reframe the camera, pan across an area, or center an object.
These are Google’s stated use cases, not results from an independent accuracy or usability study. The feature’s practical promise is interactive, situational assistance: a person can ask what something is, request more detail, or adjust the view in response to spoken guidance.
Who can use it and how to turn it on
Google says Guided Vision is available on Android devices running Android 9 or later, in regions and languages where Gemini Live is supported. Update the Gemini app and Android system software; availability may still vary because rollout is gradual. An eligible device does not guarantee the setting has reached every user. See Google’s Guided Vision help page for current availability and instructions.

Accessibility shortcuts
Android lets users assign a Guided Vision shortcut to the floating accessibility button, a two-finger gesture, or both volume keys. With TalkBack enabled, open the TalkBack menu with a three-finger tap and choose Guided Vision. The available shortcut options and labels may depend on device configuration.
What it cannot safely do
Google warns that Guided Vision can make mistakes. It is not a medical device or mobility aid, must not replace a white cane or other established mobility aids, and is not intended for navigation or obstacle detection. Do not rely on its descriptions or reframing cues to decide whether a path is clear or safe; continue to use established mobility aids and safe-travel practices. Product documentation does not establish that the feature makes travel safer or replaces human assistance.

What the launch does—and does not—show about AI
Guided Vision makes a compelling case for one useful application of AI: helping people access visual information in context, through an interaction that can respond to questions rather than merely produce a static description. Google says it developed the feature alongside blind and low-vision community members. That statement does not specify how representative the collaboration was or quantify outcomes for users.

The broader claim that this is what AI is “really for” is an argument about priorities, not a conclusion proven by the product documentation.

Google Research has discussed an “accessibility gap”—the delay between a feature’s release and the arrival of assistive support—and described prototypes using live video for interactive audio descriptions. That provides context for why accessibility designed into products matters, but it does not measure Guided Vision’s outcomes. Google Research’s article addresses that broader issue.
