For Parth Shah, the sticking point in moving from Google to Proton is Gemini—not a single Google service, but the way Gemini can connect workflows across services. Replacing Gmail, Calendar, or other apps one by one does not necessarily replace an assistant that can retrieve information in one place and act on it in another. That is a personal account, not evidence that every Google user depends on Gemini or that Proton’s apps are inadequate.
Why Gemini is the sticking point
In an August 19, 2026 article, Android Police writer Parth Shah described Gemini as an interface across Google services: it can help retrieve information from one service and hand it off to another. Shah reported that Proton’s individual services worked adequately for him, while coordinating across them was the harder part. His claim is about connected workflows, not a quantified comparison of the two ecosystems. Read the account syndicated by Yahoo Tech.

The distinction matters when evaluating a switch. A replacement email app may handle email well, and a replacement calendar may handle events well, without offering the same assistant-led handoff between them. The key question is whether your regular tasks rely on that bridge.

What Gemini Connected Apps can do
Google describes Connected Apps as a way for Gemini to connect to other apps to complete requests and, with permission, take actions. Its examples include summarizing Gmail, creating calendar events, searching productivity apps, finding media, messaging, and controlling supported devices. Google’s Connected Apps guide lists the available connections and controls.
#1 Best Overall
- Attention-grabbing design meets the latest evolution of the Google Pixel Camera on the new Google Pixel 11 Pro; Gemini Intelligence helps manage details so you can live in the moment[1]; and the phone is available in two sizes
- Unlocked Android phone gives you the flexibility to change carriers and choose your own data plan: Works with Google Fi, Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, and other major carriers[2]
- Stay informed without looking at your screen: When your phone is face down, Pixel HiLight gently alerts you with subtle glowing lights when your favorite contacts are calling or you’re talking with Gemini; exclusive to Google Pixel 11 Pro phones
- Magic Capture catches the moment as you live it: With just one tap, Pixel 11 Pro captures video and photos, and automatically edits, crops, and unblurs a curated collection, ready to share – and you get the memory of how it felt to be in the moment
- Two new cameras for more brilliant photos: A larger telephoto sensor captures 30% more light for clear, beautiful photos and videos, even in the dark[3]; Pixel’s longest zoom ever helps you capture details from impressive distances[4]
These capabilities are not guaranteed to be identical for every person. Google says availability can vary by Gemini app, device, country, language, and other factors. Personal-account access also depends on sign-in and settings. Check the Connected Apps screen in your own Gemini account and verify the particular app and action you rely on; a feature documented by Google may not be available in your circumstances. Google explains availability and management.
What the Proton comparison does—and does not—show
Proton’s Lumo support material describes a privacy-oriented assistant for tasks such as answering questions, helping write messages, summarizing content, and explaining technical concepts. Proton’s Lumo support page does not document a command-center workflow matching the Gemini examples above. That is a limit in what this reviewed page establishes, not proof that Proton has no integrations or that Lumo cannot do more.

- Google Pixel 10a is a durable, everyday phone with more[1]; snap brilliant photography on a simple, powerful camera, get 30+ hours out of a full charge[2], and do more with helpful AI like Gemini[3]
- Unlocked Android phone gives you the flexibility to change carriers and choose your own data plan; it works with Google Fi, Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, and other major carriers
- Pixel 10a is sleek and durable, with a super smooth finish, scratch-resistant Corning Gorilla Glass 7i display, and IP68 water and dust protection[4]
- The Actua display with 3,000-nit peak brightness shows up clear as day, even in direct sunlight[5]
- Plan, create, and get more done with help from Gemini, your built-in AI assistant[3]; have it screen spam calls while you focus[6]; chat with Gemini to brainstorm your meal plan[7], or bring your ideas to life with Nano Banana[8]
Proton says Lumo does not use conversations to train its models and describes how chats are stored. Those are Proton’s own product and privacy claims; readers weighing them should consult the current support details and decide whether they meet their needs. The available material does not establish feature parity across every Proton service.

Instead of comparing app names alone, write down the tasks where Gemini connects services. For each task, check the complete chain:
- Find the information. Note which service holds it, such as email, a calendar, or another supported app.
- Retrieve or create it. Identify what you ask the assistant to find, summarize, draft, or schedule.
- Complete the handoff. Check whether the assistant can pass the result into the next app or initiate the action, rather than merely returning text for you to copy.
- Confirm access. Verify that the relevant Connected App and action appear for your account, device, country, and settings.
- Compare privacy priorities. Decide what you are comfortable connecting and sharing with an assistant, using each provider’s current documentation rather than assuming the services handle data alike.
If your routine depends on several of these handoffs, test those exact tasks before moving your accounts. If you mainly use Gemini for standalone questions, drafting, or summaries, the cross-app difference may matter less. Google’s AI plans page lists Gemini benefits for US-facing plans, but availability, eligibility, and terms vary; the cited material does not establish that a paid plan is required for every Connected Apps use case.

Gemini can be a meaningful reason for one person to delay a move because it may join information and actions across services. It is not a universal verdict against Proton: the author’s experience is personal, Google’s integrations vary by user, and the reviewed Lumo page does not settle what every Proton workflow can do. The practical test is whether your own essential handoffs work with the tools and access you will have after switching.
