Google Gemini Spark is now documented for Mac file tasks, but it does not have unrestricted access to your Mac. You choose which folders it can access, and Spark can work with files in those connected folders as well as available Connected Apps. Because it can edit, delete and share files, review its prompts and results carefully.
What changed: Gemini Spark is more than the standard Mac app
Google announced Spark for its Gemini macOS app on June 30, 2026, initially as a beta for Google AI Ultra subscribers aged 18 and over, starting in the United States. Google’s current help page now explains how to connect folders and use Spark for multi-step tasks. Availability may vary; Google’s help page says Spark can be used where available but does not establish a complete current country and plan eligibility list. Google’s June announcement and its current Spark help page provide the dated and current details, respectively.

The regular Gemini Mac app supports chat and productivity features such as drafting, coding help, image analysis, voice, and sharing a window for context. Spark adds tasks involving connected folders and Connected Apps. Those are distinct capabilities: sharing a window gives Gemini context about what is visible; connecting a folder gives Spark access to files in that folder for supported tasks. Which Mac files can Spark access?
You select folders from the Connected folders toolbar and grant the required permission. Google’s documentation states: “Gemini can only view files or directories that you specifically add to the Connected folders toolbar.” This is folder-scoped access, not full access to every file on the Mac. With permission, Spark can view and edit most folders in the connected locations, including Downloads, Desktop, Documents, and Photos. Files outside the folders you connect are not included in that documented access. Google’s Spark help page describes the permissions and workflow.

What can Spark do to connected files?
Google’s examples include analyzing, editing, renaming and reorganizing files; editing a Google Doc and saving it to the desktop; and finding and emailing a file to someone in your contacts. These are actions, not just answers about a file. Spark can also permanently delete files and share them with third parties. Google says it is designed to ask before those higher-impact actions, but users should check the file contents and recipient before approving. Google’s current documentation lists these capabilities and cautions.
Backups are temporary, not a guarantee
Google says Spark creates temporary backup files while working on computer files. You may be able to recover them before moving to another task; the backups are deleted when a new query or task begins or after 24 hours. Google cautions that a file may not be recoverable after a task or an instruction to delete it. Treat edits and deletions as potentially consequential rather than assuming the backup will restore every change. Google’s Spark help page explains the backup window.

How Connected Apps fit in
Connected Apps let Spark work with services beyond local folders, subject to the integrations available to your account. In its June 30 announcement, Google named Google Tasks, Google Keep, Canva, Dropbox, Instacart, OpenTable and Zillow Rentals as new Connected Apps, saying they would first roll out on web and mobile and reach macOS in the following weeks. That announcement does not establish that every integration is enabled for every Mac user today. Check the Connected Apps available in your Gemini interface rather than assuming the announced list is universally available. Google’s announcement describes the initial rollout.

Content shared to that drive may also be visible to other people who have access. Avoid entering sign-in details, payment information or other sensitive information directly into a task thread. Google’s Spark help page sets out these cautions.

Can you control your Mac remotely?
Google’s current Mac help page documents starting Spark tasks from another device signed into the same Gemini account. The Gemini Mac app must be running, and Spark’s terms must be accepted. Google lists being on the same Wi-Fi network, or having Bluetooth turned on and linked, among the connection requirements. From another device, users can start tasks, send voice or text prompts and read past chats. This is remote control through the signed-in app setup—not unrestricted access to a Mac from the web. Google’s current Spark help page gives the setup requirements.
Google’s rolling Gemini release updates separately described remote task access from web or mobile as “Coming soon.” That wording reflects the release notes at the time; the current help page now documents remote control and its prerequisites.

Mac requirements and who can use Spark
Google’s Mac app requirements are a Mac with Apple silicon running macOS Sequoia (15.0) or later, at least 8 GB of RAM, at least 200 MB of free disk space, and a stable internet connection. The app supports a personal Google account, or a work or school account where an administrator has enabled Gemini. These are software requirements, not a recommendation to buy a new Mac. Google’s Mac app help page lists the current requirements.
Spark’s launch announcement described beta access for Google AI Ultra subscribers aged 18 or older, starting in the US. Its current help page says Spark is usable where available, but does not give a complete current eligibility matrix. Check your account and app for availability rather than treating the launch terms as a definitive description of access today. The June announcement and current Spark help page reflect those different time frames.

How to reduce the risks before using Spark
- Connect only the folders needed for the task; do not treat the permission as access to every file on the Mac.
- Read the requested action before approving an edit, deletion or share, and verify the recipient and file contents before anything is sent.
- Be especially cautious with public cloud drives, where other people may see shared content and Spark may be able to change or delete files.
- Keep sensitive information, sign-in details and payment details out of task prompts.
- Avoid unattended tasks or schedules involving sensitive information or actions that need supervision. Google warns that Spark can make mistakes: “Gemini is still learning and can make mistakes.”
