When permission to use a video or any material inside it expires, stop using the affected material unless you have secured new rights. A YouTube claim—or the absence of one—does not extend a license. Inventory each video’s permissions, arrange renewal or a cleared substitute before the deadline, and update your always-on schedule when rights end.
What an expired license means for an always-on channel
The license or other permission, along with applicable law, determines what you may do after its term ends. Do not assume you can keep streaming a video, leave it available in an archive, or monetize it just because it was uploaded earlier or YouTube has not flagged it. YouTube says it does not decide copyright ownership or mediate ownership disputes (Copyright tips).

A video may include several separate rights-bearing works: for example, music, footage, images, or performances. Permission for the video as a whole does not necessarily cover every embedded work or every use. YouTube’s rights-management system distinguishes assets, ownership information, references, and policies; those platform records are not a substitute for checking the permissions you actually hold (Overview of YouTube rights management).
Build a rights register for every recurring video
Record the permission for each video and separately licensed element. The agreement controls the exact obligations; these fields help make its scope and deadlines operationally visible.

- Identify the material: video or segment title, file or playlist location, and each embedded work and its owner.
- Record the evidence and scope: agreement or license location; permitted platforms and formats; territories; continuous or live use; monetization conditions; and archive availability.
- Track the term: start and end dates, renewal procedure, and any conditions that must be met before renewal.
- Assign responsibility: name the person who will decide whether to renew, replace, or remove the material.
- Set advance reminders: allow enough time to get a written renewal or prepare a cleared replacement. YouTube does not specify an ideal notice period for this workflow.

Plan the change before permission ends
Ask the rights holder for written permission covering the use you actually need, including continuous or live use, territories, monetization, and archive availability where relevant. If renewal is not secured by the expiration date, queue a cleared substitute and schedule the affected video or segment out of the always-on programming before the term ends. The timing is an operational safeguard, not a YouTube-mandated lead time.

- Platforms and formats, including livestreams and archives.
- License term, renewal rights, and what happens to already-published material at expiry.
- Territories and monetization or revenue-sharing conditions.
- Coverage of both the musical composition and the sound recording, if music is involved.
The actual agreement determines the rights granted. Do not treat an old upload, a Content ID status, or the lack of a claim as an extension of a contract.

Content ID claim or copyright removal request?
These are different processes. A Content ID claim can affect where a video is viewable or whether it can be monetized; it is not itself the same as a copyright removal request. A valid removal request can result in the video being removed and a copyright strike (About copyright removal requests; About Content ID claims).
Neither process changes the underlying permission. Resolve a claim where appropriate, but separately stop using material whose license has expired unless you have new permission. YouTube’s platform tools do not establish a grace period for always-on channels.

How to edit claimed audio in YouTube Studio
If a Content ID claim identifies audio in an existing video, YouTube documents three Studio Editor options. Use the one that fits the video, and verify the result after processing.

- Open the claim details: in YouTube Studio, go to Content, find the video, and open its copyright details to see what was matched.
- Choose an edit: trim out the claimed segment; replace the claimed song with a track from the YouTube Audio Library; or erase/mute the claimed sound.
- Preview and save: check that the change preserves what you need before saving. Download a copy or use Google Takeout first if you need the unedited master.
- Check after processing: processing time varies. Reload the page when processing completes and verify both the edited video and the claim status. A claim may remain if any claimed material remains.
As of June 2025, YouTube says saved Studio Editor changes cannot be undone with “Revert to original.” Non-YouTube Partner Program channels may also be unable to save Studio edits on videos with over 100,000 views. What to do about a scheduled removal notice
A scheduled copyright removal request is separate from an ordinary Content ID claim. YouTube gives seven days for action such as deleting the material or seeking a retraction. If a valid request takes effect, YouTube removes the video and applies a copyright strike (About copyright removal requests).
Follow the notice and YouTube’s stated process rather than treating a Studio audio edit as a response to every removal request. If ownership, a copyright exception, or a counter-notification is disputed, get qualified legal advice. YouTube notes that fair use is case-specific and that Content ID cannot determine whether a use is legally fair (Fair use on YouTube).
Creator Music licenses: check the term, not just the track
YouTube says paid Creator Music licenses were deprecated on August 10, 2026. Existing paid and gratis licenses remain in force until their terms end, but cannot be renewed under those existing terms; YouTube says the product is moving to gratis licenses. Its guidance describes Creator Music as available to U.S. YouTube Partner Program creators, with expansion outside the U.S. pending. This is specific to Creator Music, not a rule for every music license or territory. Check the actual license in your account and its current terms (Get started with licensing as a rights holder).
