What information can a Gemini skill contain?
Google describes skills as saved custom instructions that can be reused across Gemini chats and tasks. You can create one with Gemini, use a template, write it manually, or upload a SKILL.md file, optionally accompanied by reference files. Google says a skill may be applied when relevant or when you explicitly request it. See Google’s current Skills help page for the feature details.

The important privacy point is that the instructions themselves count: Google’s Gemini Apps Privacy Hub includes instructions provided in Gems and Skills among information users provide to Gemini Apps. It also names prompts, shared files, and feedback. That means a skill’s description is not the only content to inspect; review its full instructions and every uploaded reference file.

Google’s published guidance supports a qualified answer, not a blanket yes or no for every skill. The Privacy Hub says account activity controls let users control whether activity is used to improve Google AI, and it explicitly includes Skills instructions among information provided to Gemini Apps. The cited guidance does not establish that every saved skill instruction is always used for model improvement, nor does it promise that a particular skill is categorically excluded. Check the current Privacy Hub and the activity settings for your account rather than treating a skill as exempt from those policies.

Google also says that when Keep Activity is off, it still uses chats to respond and help protect Google, its users, and the public, including with help from human reviewers. Therefore, switching that setting off is not equivalent to “nothing is processed or retained.” For account-specific retention and processing details, consult the current Privacy Hub.
Privacy checks before adding sensitive information
- Review the exact content. Read the skill’s instructions and inspect every uploaded reference file. Remove passwords, access tokens, identifying details, and confidential material that the skill does not need. Google identifies Skills instructions and shared files as information provided to Gemini Apps.
- Review activity controls. In your Google Account, check Gemini Apps Activity and the associated data-use choice, deletion controls, and auto-delete period. Google says these controls let users review and delete activity and control whether it is used to improve Google AI. Consult the Privacy Hub for the current account-specific explanation.
- Do not treat Keep Activity off as a no-processing switch. Google says chats may still be used to respond and for safety and protection purposes, including with human reviewers. The exact retention and processing details depend on the current policy and account context.
- Check Connected Apps. Consider which connected services the skill may interact with and what information those services expose. Google describes possible data such as files, email, calendar events, photos, contact details, financial information, location, and insights from those sources. Such data may be sensitive or confidential, and third-party services have their own privacy policies. See Google’s Connected Apps guidance.
- Verify the feature you plan to use. Skills work with some Connected Apps, but not every Gemini feature. Google’s current Gems-to-skills transition guidance lists limitations, including Canvas and Deep Research. Check current compatibility before relying on a particular workflow.
- Apply the rules that govern the data. If the information belongs to an employer, client, or regulated activity, check the organization’s policies, contract terms, and relevant service terms with the responsible organization. General Gemini help pages cannot determine whether a specific dataset is permitted in your circumstances.

Check whether the feature is available for your account
Availability and compatibility are product details that can change. As checked on October 7, 2026, Google’s computer help page says creating and using skills requires users to be at least 18, signed in to Gemini with a personal Google Account, and to have Keep Activity on; it says work or school accounts are not supported at that time. The page lists availability on Gemini mobile, Mac, and web, describes supported uploads as plain-text-oriented, and sets a 100 MB maximum total uploaded-file size. These are current product conditions, not privacy guarantees. Verify them on Google’s Skills help page before relying on them.
