Grayscale’s latest cited milestone for its Zcash ETF, ticker ZCSH, was more than $500 million in assets under management (AUM) on September 8, 2026—not $1 billion. The issuer also reported more than $70 million in cumulative inflows during the fund’s first two weeks and disclosed a roughly $100 million investment by an affiliated company. Those figures support a notable launch, but do not establish either the $1 billion claim or that the wider crypto ETF market has entered a defined “new phase.”
What Grayscale reported—and what it did not
ZCSH began trading on NYSE Arca on August 25, 2026. In a September 8 release, two weeks after launch, Grayscale said the fund’s AUM had grown to more than $500 million. The issuer attributed that milestone to more than $70 million in cumulative inflows since launch as an exchange-traded product, plus an approximately $100 million investment from an affiliated investor. Grayscale’s September 8 announcement, filed as an SEC exhibit, is the primary source for those reported figures.

The available dated issuer statement and SEC filing do not substantiate ZCSH topping $1 billion. Nor do they establish a market-wide turning point for crypto ETFs: the reported figures concern one fund, and the announcement does not define or measure a new phase across the ETF market.

AUM is the value of the assets managed by the fund at a point in time. Cumulative inflows measure money entering the fund over a period. They are different measures: AUM can also move as the value of the underlying ZEC changes and through other fund activity. Grayscale’s stated AUM therefore should not be treated as a tally of independent investor deposits.

The SEC filing identifies DCG International Investments Ltd. as the purchaser of ZCSH shares on September 8. It says the entity exchanged 85,705.32563297 ZEC through an authorized participant for shares valued at approximately $100 million. The filing says those shares had no preference features and were economically the same as the fund’s other shares. The transaction is disclosed in the September 8 Form 8-K. It is separate from the issuer’s report of more than $70 million in cumulative inflows; the figures should not be added or described as though they measure the same thing.
What ZCSH gives investors
Grayscale describes ZCSH as an exchange-traded product offering spot exposure to ZEC. The SEC-filed prospectus says the trust holds ZEC and issues shares representing beneficial interests in the trust. A share is therefore a security representing an interest in the trust, not ZEC itself. Grayscale’s launch announcement also states that the fund is not registered under the Investment Company Act of 1940 and that buying a share is not a direct investment in ZEC. See the August 25 launch announcement and the SEC-filed prospectus.
The prospectus describes basket creation and redemption mechanics. It also says the amount of ZEC represented by each share gradually declines as ZEC is used to pay the sponsor fee and other trust expenses. The prospectus is the place to check current fees and operating terms; those terms should not be inferred from the AUM milestone.

This distinction matters when interpreting “spot exposure”: it describes the fund’s relationship to ZEC, not a promise that a shareholder can use the fund share as ZEC or transact with it on the Zcash network.

Zcash privacy is optional, not automatic
Zcash, launched in 2016, supports both transparent and shielded transactions. The prospectus describes shielded transactions as using zk-SNARKs to protect transaction amounts and sender and recipient information; transparent transactions are publicly viewable and can enable selective disclosure. Calling Zcash private by default would omit this important distinction.
The prospectus reports a maximum supply of 21 million ZEC, 16.7 million circulating ZEC, and an aggregate Zcash market value of $6.7 billion as of June 30, 2026. It also lists Zcash as the 12th-largest digital asset by market capitalization tracked by CoinMarketCap on that date. These are dated prospectus figures, not current market measurements.

Risks that the launch milestone does not remove
Grayscale warns that ZCSH carries significant risk and heightened volatility, may not suit investors unable to bear the loss of their entire investment, and is not a complete investment program. The prospectus says share value can diverge from the value of the trust’s underlying ZEC after expenses and liabilities. It also describes substantial historical premiums and discounts in the predecessor trust’s OTCQX shares; that history is not post-conversion ZCSH trading performance.
