Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Gemini is a standalone Mac app; Apple Intelligence is a set of features built into macOS on supported Macs. Gemini offers a dedicated desktop assistant with screen and window context and connections to Google services. Apple integrates writing, Siri, and other assistance into the system, with on-device processing where possible and Private Cloud Compute for some requests. Their privacy models and app access are different, so the better fit depends on what you ask the assistant to do and what information you let it use.
What each product is—and which Macs can use it
Google announced Gemini for Mac on April 15, 2026. Google’s current desktop product page lists macOS 15 or later and Apple silicon as requirements. Apple Intelligence is integrated into macOS rather than installed as a separate assistant app, and Apple says availability depends on the Mac model, language, and region. Check the vendors’ current requirements for your specific Mac and location; having a recent version of macOS alone does not establish eligibility. Google’s Gemini for Mac announcement, Google’s desktop product page, and Apple’s compatibility information describe the respective products and requirements.

How app access and everyday workflows differ
| Use case | Gemini on Mac | Apple Intelligence |
|---|---|---|
| Getting help from the desktop | Google describes a keyboard shortcut for opening Gemini, voice dictation, window or screen context, and help editing text across open apps. The information available depends on what you choose to share and the feature you use. Google’s product page | Features such as Writing Tools and Siri are integrated into macOS. Apple also supports ChatGPT in certain Apple Intelligence experiences when the extension is enabled. Apple Intelligence overview |
| Personal and service context | Gemini can connect to Google services. Google also describes Spark workflows using selected local folders, but Spark features and connected apps are rollout-dependent; check whether they are available in your account and region. Google’s Spark announcement, Google’s product page | Apple says Apple Intelligence can use on-device information across apps to personalize assistance. That system-level context is distinct from connecting a standalone assistant to Google services. Apple’s Apple Intelligence privacy information |
| Actions and integrations | Google describes desktop file actions in Spark, such as sorting PDFs, and announced connected-app expansion for the Mac app. These functions may not yet be available to every user. Google’s Spark announcement | Apple Intelligence integrates with system features including Siri and Shortcuts. A ChatGPT handoff is optional, not a requirement for using Apple Intelligence. Apple Intelligence overview |
In practical terms, Gemini is a fit to consider if you want a desktop assistant alongside your apps or work often with Google services. Apple Intelligence is a fit to consider if you want system-integrated features and personal context across apps. Neither description guarantees that a particular feature is enabled for your device, account, or region.
Where requests and data go
Apple Intelligence and Private Cloud Compute
Apple says Apple Intelligence handles requests on-device when possible and uses Private Cloud Compute for some requests that need more capacity. Apple states that data sent to Private Cloud Compute is used to fulfill the request, is not stored, and is not accessible to Apple. Apple also says personal data and interactions are not used to train its foundation models unless a user explicitly opts in to help improve them. These are Apple’s descriptions of its own system, not a neutral comparative audit. Apple’s Apple Intelligence privacy information explains its stated data path.

Apple says Apple Intelligence can draw on on-device information across apps—for example, upcoming calendar events or frequently used apps—to provide personal context. Apple’s stated design is to select relevant data for model assistance without requiring Apple to access or store that personal data. Apple’s privacy explanation
Gemini’s service and connected apps
Gemini is a Google service, not an on-device-only equivalent to Apple Intelligence. Google’s Gemini Apps Privacy Hub covers the Mac app and describes data categories that can include prompts, uploaded files, generated content, recordings or transcripts, device and browser information, and information from connected apps. The data involved depends on the feature, connections, account, and settings. Google also says connected apps may handle information under their own privacy terms as well as Google’s. Review the current Gemini Apps Privacy Hub and the activity controls in your account before sharing sensitive material.

The optional ChatGPT handoff in Apple Intelligence
When a supported Apple Intelligence feature uses the ChatGPT extension, the request and attachments, along with limited contextual data, are sent to OpenAI. Apple says users can enable the extension without a ChatGPT account. In that no-account case, Apple says OpenAI may use the data to fulfill the request and must not retain the request or response or use it for model training, except where required by law. If you sign in to ChatGPT, your ChatGPT account settings and OpenAI’s privacy policies apply instead. Apple’s privacy information and Apple’s feature overview describe this handoff.
Apple says users are asked before photos or files are sent to ChatGPT, even if ordinary request confirmations have been disabled. Treat that as a separate sharing decision from using Apple Intelligence features that do not invoke ChatGPT. Apple’s privacy information

How to choose for your Mac
- Start with compatibility. Check your Mac’s chip and macOS version against Google’s current Gemini requirements, and check Apple’s model, language, and region eligibility for Apple Intelligence.
- Consider the context you need. Choose based on whether you want screen or window context, Google-service connections, selected local-folder workflows where available, or Apple’s system-level personal context.
- Match the tool to the data. For sensitive work, review the relevant vendor privacy settings and connected-app boundaries before sharing prompts, files, or screen content. An Apple Intelligence request sent to ChatGPT crosses an additional provider boundary.
- Account for rollout and settings. Spark actions and connected apps may be arriving in stages, while Apple Intelligence availability varies by hardware, language, and region. Verify the feature is present and enabled on your own setup.
- Judge by your own tasks. Try representative, non-sensitive tasks—such as rewriting a passage or finding information in a service you already use—and compare usefulness, control, and workflow fit. Official product and privacy pages do not establish a universal winner or a neutral head-to-head accuracy or privacy ranking.
