Gemini Live is the better fit when you want to show an assistant your camera view or phone screen; ChatGPT Voice offers more documented platform flexibility, including Voice in Chat on the web, iOS, and Android. Both support spoken, interruptible conversations, but their visual features differ by mode. Privacy controls, account eligibility, and staged rollouts also matter, so there is no universal winner.
How Gemini Live and ChatGPT Voice differ
Both are designed for spoken, back-and-forth conversations rather than one spoken command followed by one answer. Google says Gemini Live lets you interrupt and change topics. OpenAI describes ChatGPT Voice’s Live option as listening and speaking at the same time for more natural turn-taking.

Choose the specific mode that supports the task: “ChatGPT Voice” does not mean every visual feature is absent, and Gemini’s documented camera and screen features should not be assumed available on every device or account.
Where you can use each service
Gemini Live: mobile app access
Google’s cited instructions cover Android phones and tablets, plus iPhone and iPad. On Android, the requirements include the Gemini mobile app or Gemini as the mobile assistant, a signed-in Google account with Gemini Apps access, and the latest Google app. The iOS instructions require an iPhone or iPad and the Gemini mobile app. Google says Gemini Live is not available in the Gemini web app, and Gems cannot be used with Live. Updates roll out gradually, so features may not appear for everyone at once.

Google also says a Live session can be started on Pixel Buds by saying, “Hey Google, let’s talk.” That is an optional way to start a session, not a requirement to use Gemini Live. Google’s Android Gemini Live guide
ChatGPT Voice: web, mobile, and eligible desktop workspaces
OpenAI lists Voice in Chat on the web, iOS, and Android for eligible workspaces. It separately describes Voice in Desktop in the ChatGPT macOS and Windows apps for eligible business and education workspace configurations. The documentation does not establish a complete device-by-device compatibility matrix or universal regional availability. Check the current feature in your app and the linked help page for the account and workspace you actually use.
What to know about privacy and data
Compare the data collected in the mode you plan to use, how long it is retained, how deletion works, and what settings govern review or training. Camera and screen sharing can expose more than speech, so check the controls before sharing sensitive material.

Gemini Live
Google’s Gemini Apps Privacy Notice says data provided to Gemini Apps can include what users say, files and screens shared, and transcripts and recordings of Live interactions, including audio, video, and screens shared with Live. It lists purposes including providing, maintaining and improving services, developing services, personalization, communication, performance measurement, and protection. Google says human reviewers review some collected data for stated service purposes, and advises users not to enter confidential information they would not want a reviewer to see or Google to use for service improvement. ChatGPT Voice
OpenAI says Live and Advanced audio clips, and Advanced video clips, are stored with the transcript in chat history and retained for 30 days. When a chat is deleted, associated clips are also deleted within 30 days, subject to security, safety, or legal exceptions and the stated case where clips were shared for training and already disassociated from the account. Standard-mode audio is deleted after transcription unless the user chose to share audio for training.

OpenAI says audio and video clips are not used for training unless users choose to share them or enable the relevant recording controls. If “Improve the model for everyone” is on, transcripts and other files may be used depending on plan and settings. Review the current controls for your account before relying on a particular setting. These policies use different wording and scopes; they do not establish a blanket privacy winner. If you connect third-party apps or services, check the applicable policies for those connections too.

Which one should you choose?
- Pick Gemini Live if showing a mobile camera view or screen is central to the conversation, and the feature is available in your Google account and app.
- Pick ChatGPT Voice if you want documented Voice in Chat access on the web as well as mobile, or you want to use Live’s available web search, memory, text, or image functions. These features depend on account availability.
- For mobile video or screen sharing in ChatGPT, check whether Advanced is available; those capabilities are not part of Live.
- For a managed or education account, check workspace settings and eligibility before choosing based on desktop support.
- Before sharing sensitive content, inspect the privacy controls for the exact mode, account, and connected apps you will use.
Feature names, rollouts, and settings can change. Confirm availability in your current app and consult the official help pages above rather than assuming the same options apply to every region, plan, or device.
