If a battery symbol is printed beside a computer’s USB port, it commonly identifies a port intended to charge connected devices. Plug in the phone with a cable that fits both devices, then check the phone’s screen to confirm charging. The mark is not a universal speed rating, and whether the port works while the computer is asleep or off depends on the model and its settings.
First, identify where the battery symbol appears
A battery mark printed beside a computer’s USB port is different from a battery icon shown on the phone’s display. On some computers, the port-side mark indicates a charging-capable port. For example, Lenovo says an ideapad USB port marked with a battery icon supports continuous power delivery even when the system is off (Lenovo’s Always On USB instructions). Dell uses battery or lightning-bolt marks for certain PowerShare ports, but availability and behavior depend on the computer and its configuration (Dell PowerShare guidance).

These are manufacturer-specific examples, not a universal definition for every computer. The symbol alone does not establish the port’s charging speed, power output, or support for USB Power Delivery.

- Choose a compatible USB cable. Match one end to the phone’s charging port and the other to the computer’s USB port. The connector types vary by device; do not force a plug that does not fit. Nothing’s phone guidance describes connecting a phone to a computer or another device with a USB cable (Nothing support).
- Connect the cable to the marked port and the phone. If the computer is on, leave it on while checking whether charging starts.
- Check the phone’s screen. A battery icon with a lightning bolt indicates charging in Apple’s guidance (Apple Support); Samsung describes the same indicator for its phones (Samsung Support).
If the phone does not start charging
Check the computer’s power-sharing setting
Some computers require an Always On USB, PowerShare, or similarly named feature to be enabled. Lenovo’s instructions include enabling Always On USB in BIOS for supported models. Dell notes that PowerShare may be disabled by default on many newer laptops, and its behavior can vary with the computer’s power state. Consult the manual for the exact computer model rather than assuming the symbol guarantees charging while the computer is asleep or shut down.

Rule out the cable or port
- Try a known-working compatible cable and a different USB port.
- If another port works, the marked port may need a setting change or may behave differently in the current power state.
- If the phone still does not charge, use a suitable wall charger and matching cable as a fallback. Nothing recommends its supplied charger and cable for wall charging; the appropriate equipment depends on the phone.
Consider phone-side warnings
If the phone reports moisture in its USB port, stop reconnecting it and follow the phone maker’s instructions. Huawei advises that moisture detection can stop charging. If the phone becomes unusually hot, disconnect it and move it to a cooler place, following device-specific guidance (Huawei charging guidance).
What the battery symbol does—and does not—tell you
The symbol can point to a port designed to charge devices, and on some models that port may remain powered when the computer is off. It does not promise that every phone will charge in every computer state, that the port will supply enough power for every use, or that charging will be fast. Apple, for example, cautions that an iPhone should be charged from a keyboard only if the keyboard has a high-power USB port.

Do not infer USB Power Delivery support from the mark. USB-IF describes USB Power Delivery as a defined mechanism that coexists with standard USB Battery Charging implementations; support and power depend on the equipment and its specifications (USB-IF overview). The cited sources do not establish a universal voltage, current, or charge time for a port bearing a battery symbol.

A battery icon with a lightning bolt on the phone display is a charging-status indicator, not a label for the computer’s USB port. Apple notes that an iPhone with very low power may need to remain connected to a charger for a while before its screen responds.
