Gemini in Gmail is Google’s AI assistant built into Gmail. It can help summarize email threads, find details in messages, draft or revise email, and—when supported—work with related information in Google Drive or Calendar. It is not the Gmail app itself, and access to individual features depends on your account, plan, location, language, and device.
What Gemini in Gmail means
Gemini in Gmail is a set of AI features within Gmail. On desktop, the general assistant appears in an Ask Gemini side panel; other capabilities are offered through controls in a message thread or compose window. The standalone Gemini app is a separate product, even though some tasks and connected Google services overlap. Google describes the Gmail experience and its controls.

There is not one universal Gemini-in-Gmail feature set. The general panel and tools such as Help me write, thread summaries, and suggested replies can have different eligibility, language, and platform conditions. Google’s feature overview lists availability by feature.
What Gemini can help with in Gmail
Summarize conversations
Ask for an overview of a long email thread or its key points and action items. Google also lists AI-generated conversation overviews among its Gmail features.

Find details in messages
You can ask questions about information in your mail, such as a flight time, a package’s expected arrival, who sent a message, or mail received during a date range. Examples from Google include “Show my unread emails,” “Find emails from [person] sent last week,” “When is my package arriving?” and “What time is my next flight?”
Draft, revise, and reply
Help me write can produce an email from a prompt or revise existing wording for tone and clarity. Suggested Replies can offer response options informed by the conversation. These are separate feature-specific tools rather than a guarantee that every message has the same controls.

Use related Workspace information
Where supported, Gemini in Gmail can find information in Drive files, answer certain Calendar questions, and create Calendar events. Google’s documented Gmail workflow answers event questions from your primary Calendar; do not assume it will search every calendar you can access.

Google’s overview also lists AI Inbox, Gmail search overviews, Gmail Live, proofreading, and Help me schedule. Their availability is not uniform, so check the feature table rather than assuming that seeing one Gemini control means all the others are enabled.
Who can use it, and does it cost extra?
Eligibility depends on the particular feature, whether you use a personal or work/school account, your plan, country, supported language, and platform. Google lists eligible Workspace plans for work or school accounts and Google AI Plus, Pro, or Ultra for personal accounts for certain features. Its plan guide also says that some features—including Help me write, email-thread AI Overviews, and Suggested Replies—are available at no charge to personal Gmail users in the United States. That does not make every Gemini feature free or available to every personal account.
The feature table distinguishes among individual tools: some are limited to U.S. personal accounts without a paid plan, while eligible Google AI and Workspace subscribers may have access to specified features and languages in more regions. AI Inbox and Help me schedule, for example, have narrower availability than some other listed capabilities. Check Google’s current feature and availability table for the specific tool you want.

Google says users must be at least 18 and use an eligible account. For work and school accounts, an eligible Workspace plan is required, and an administrator can affect whether features are available. See Google’s account and plan eligibility guidance.
How to use Gemini in Gmail
Ask a question from the desktop panel
- Open Gmail in a desktop browser and select Ask Gemini near the upper-right corner.
- Choose a suggested prompt or enter a question in the side panel, such as “Summarize this email” or “Create a list of action items for me based on this email.”
- Review the response against the original messages before relying on it.
Use a feature inside a message or draft
For tasks such as writing or revising an email and summarizing a thread, look for the relevant control in the compose window or conversation. The available controls depend on feature eligibility and platform. Google also documents Gmail experiences on iOS and Android, but mobile availability can differ from desktop.

Request web information explicitly
If you want an answer based on the web rather than just your Gmail or connected Workspace information, Google’s prompt guidance says to request “Google Search” or “web search.” This is an instruction for that kind of prompt; it does not mean ordinary answers in Gmail are automatically web-searched. Limits and safe ways to use it
Verify answers and generated text
AI summaries can miss context, and answers or drafts can be wrong or unsuitable. Google’s Workspace Learning Center cautions: “Gemini features may suggest inaccurate or inappropriate information.” Check important details against the source email, and review a draft before sending it.
Review inbox changes before confirming
For actions that change messages—such as archiving, deleting, labeling, marking them read, or starring—Google documents a review or confirmation step. Inspect which messages match before confirming an action.
Do not assume access is universal
Feature access can differ by account, plan, region, language, and platform, and the available feature set can change. A missing control may reflect eligibility or platform limits rather than a problem with Gmail. Use Google’s feature table and account guidance to check the particular feature and account you use.
