Gemini for Windows is an installable desktop app that gives you quick access to Google’s AI assistant while you work in other Windows apps. You can open it with Alt + Space, from the taskbar, or from the system tray. Google documents common assistant tasks and selected Google app connections for Windows, but some features promoted for its desktop experience are currently identified as macOS-only.
What Gemini for Windows does
Google positions the app as a way to bring Gemini into reach without switching to a browser tab. The global shortcut opens an app window over your current work, and Google says you can change the shortcut in the app’s settings. You can also launch Gemini from the Windows taskbar or system tray. See Google’s Gemini desktop page and its Windows help article for the current product details.

Google lists these tasks for the Windows app:
- Get quick answers to questions.
- Draft text, summarize articles, documents, or web pages, and brainstorm ideas.
- Get coding assistance.
- Upload an image and ask Gemini to analyze it.
These are capabilities Google documents, not independent performance or accuracy guarantees. Google also advertises creating custom images with Nano Banana and videos with Gemini Omni in the desktop workflow. Availability varies, and selected features require an eligible Google AI subscription; the product page says those selected features are for users aged 18 or older.

Connections to Google apps
Google describes using connected services such as Gmail, Drive, Docs, and Calendar on its desktop page. Its Windows launch announcement specifically gives Gmail and Drive as examples. Access can depend on your account and, for work or school accounts, administrator settings. The Google Workspace announcement explains that administrators control Gemini access through existing generative AI settings.

What is—and is not—Windows-native
Google distinguishes the Windows app from its macOS desktop app. Its desktop FAQ identifies screen-context sharing, voice dictation and editing across open apps, and local-folder connections with Gemini Spark as macOS capabilities. Google says more native capabilities will roll out to Windows over time. The Windows launch announcement likewise describes the app as the beginning of native desktop capabilities.
That distinction matters when reading broader desktop marketing: a feature advertised for Gemini’s desktop experience is not necessarily available as a native Windows function. The Windows help page documents uploaded-image analysis and connected Google services, but the cited Windows-specific materials do not establish that Windows can share screen context, dictate into other open apps, or connect local folders through Spark.

Accounts, availability, and paid features
Google says the desktop app is available in the countries and languages where the Gemini app is supported, but features vary by availability. Its Workspace announcement lists Workspace customers, Workspace Individual subscribers, and personal Google Account users among eligible account categories. If you use a managed work or school account, your administrator must enable Gemini access.
The app is a download; Google’s materials do not say that installing it requires a paid plan. They do say that selected features require a Google AI subscription and that availability can vary. Check Google’s current product and help pages for the features offered in your account and region rather than assuming every advertised capability is included.

How it differs from Gemini in a browser
The documented distinction is primarily access: the Windows app provides a global keyboard shortcut and taskbar or system-tray entry points, while Gemini in a browser is reached through a browser window. Google says chat history and memory sync across desktop, web, and mobile when you sign in to the same Google Account. Its official materials do not establish that the underlying Gemini functions are exclusive to Windows or that the desktop app replaces the website.
When deciding whether to install it, weigh the convenience of opening Gemini over your current work against the Windows-native features you actually need, your access to connected Google apps, and any account, regional, age, or subscription limits that apply to particular features.
