Its 54.2 lb (24.6 kg) weight is a real drawback for stairs and frequent transit transfers, and Segway’s maximum range figures are test results—not a promise of how far every rider will travel.
What the MAX G3 is—and which version this review covers
This review focuses on the US MAX G3, model 051601U, described in Segway’s US user manual. Regional specifications matter: the European MAX G3 E is a different market version, with a nominal top speed of about 25 km/h (15.5 mph). Do not assume the US speed figures apply to it. Segway’s European product page provides the E-version specifications.

For the US model, the manual lists a top speed of up to about 28 mph (45 km/h). That is a manufacturer specification, not a guarantee that this speed is legal or appropriate on public roads where you ride. Check local rules before using the scooter.
How far can the MAX G3 go?
Segway lists three US range figures: up to 50 miles (80 km) in Eco, 25 miles (40 km) in Sport, and 40 miles (65 km) at maximum speed. The manual’s speed-mode range test used a full battery, a 75 ± 5 kg load, an ambient temperature of 25 ± 5°C, pavement, and the maximum speed for each mode. These are manufacturer test results, not typical-commute guarantees.

| US mode or condition | Published range | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Eco | Up to 50 miles (80 km) | Maximum published figure; the manual’s range caveat applies. |
| Sport | Up to 25 miles (40 km) | Maximum published figure; actual distance depends on riding conditions. |
| Maximum speed | Up to 40 miles (65 km) | Manufacturer test result under the manual’s stated test conditions. |
Segway says speed, rider load, starts and stops, temperature, and battery aging affect range. For planning, treat the published numbers as reference points rather than a route-planning guarantee, particularly if your trip involves frequent acceleration, hills, cold weather or a heavier load.
One ride reported by Tom’s Guide reviewer Mike Prospero illustrates how much an individual result can differ from a headline figure. In a Sport-mode ride, he traveled just over seven miles and observed 36% battery remaining, from which he estimated roughly 11 miles for that ride. That is one reviewer’s observation, not a controlled test or a general prediction. In his review, last updated 14 September 2026, Prospero also said range varied with riding style. - Maximize every mile: Ride further without interrupting your fun thanks to proprietary SegRange technology and a high-capacity 717Wh battery that delivers up to 56 miles in Eco Mode.
- Effortless stability for every rider: The SegRide Stability Enhancement System combines an 80mm trailing distance, curved handlebar, and optimized steering damping to deliver confident directional control even at high speeds and sharp turns.
- Tested for the long ride: A high-strength lightweight aluminum alloy frame has endured 500,000 frame load fatigue test cycles and a simulated 12,427 miles of random vibration testing to support up to 286 lbs with lasting reliability.
- Advanced self-sealing tires: Wide 11-inch by 2.8-inch tubeless tires enhance traction and absorb vibration across all terrains while the built-in jelly layer automatically seals punctures up to 4mm in diameter for uninterrupted rides
- Fast and flexible charging: The built-in fast charger fully charges the scooter in approximately 4 hours with a single cable; connect a second DC charger simultaneously to reduce that time to approximately 3 hours.
How it rides: comfort, hills and throttle control
The hardware is aimed at a smoother ride over imperfect urban surfaces: the US manual lists a front twin-tube hydraulic shock absorber, rear dual hydraulic shock absorbers and 11-inch tubeless self-sealing tires. It also specifies front and rear disc brakes. These components make the MAX G3 a more comfort-focused package than a basic rigid commuter scooter, though the available evidence does not establish how it compares with a particular competing model.

On his test hill, he observed about 22 mph on a 6% grade and 17 mph on a 10% grade. Those are observations from his rides, not guaranteed climbing speeds; rider weight, battery state, conditions and the hill itself can change the result.

Throttle response deserves attention
Prospero found partial-throttle response twitchy and noticed a brief slowdown after potholes. He reported that a firmware update provided by Segway partly alleviated the throttle issue. This is a reviewer’s experience rather than a controlled comparative finding, and it is worth checking the scooter’s firmware and trying its controls in a safe area before riding in traffic.
Weight, folding and daily commuting
At approximately 54.2 lb (24.6 kg), the US MAX G3 is heavy for a scooter that a commuter may need to carry regularly. It folds, but folding does not remove the burden of lifting it up stairs, onto a train or into a car. Prospero likewise identified carrying it upstairs as a drawback. If your commute includes frequent carrying, weigh that inconvenience against the ride comfort and range you need.

The manual lists a maximum payload of 286 lb (130 kg) and folded dimensions of approximately 1218 × 590 × 592 mm. Payload is the stated maximum, not a recommendation to ride at the limit; account for clothing and anything else carried on the scooter.

These specifications are from the US MAX G3 manual. The manual lists approximately 3.5 hours for single charging and 2.5 hours for dual charging. Dual charging requires an additional Ninebot adapter, model NBW54D601D3D, sold separately, along with the included AC cable.
Water resistance and charging precautions
The manual gives the scooter body an IPX6 rating and the battery pack an IPX7 rating. Those ratings do not mean the scooter is safe to submerge. Segway says not to charge the scooter when it is wet and states that immersion damage is not covered by warranty. Let wet components dry and follow the manual’s safety guidance before charging.
Who should consider the MAX G3?
- A better fit: commuters seeking suspension, larger self-sealing tires, disc brakes and a substantial battery, who can store and charge a heavy scooter and do not need to carry it often.
- A less suitable fit: riders whose routine includes stairs, repeated transit transfers or frequent lifting, or anyone who needs a reliably known real-world range without allowing for riding conditions.
- Before buying: confirm the regional model and local speed rules, consider the weight on your actual route, and compare your expected ride distance with realistic conditions rather than the highest range figure.
