Gemini is the better fit if your everyday tasks revolve around Google services such as Gmail, Drive, Calendar, Tasks, and Keep. ChatGPT is a better fit if you want one in-chat app layer for searching connected services, using them in Deep Research, or taking actions an individual app supports. Neither is a universal winner: the choice depends on your accounts, devices, the apps you use, and whether you need to read information or change it.
“Gemini extensions” and “ChatGPT connectors” are familiar shorthand, but Google currently calls its feature Gemini Connected Apps, while OpenAI calls its integrations apps or connected apps. This is a comparison of those service connections, not of the assistants’ underlying models. Each connection is limited to the account access and permissions you authorize.

What can each assistant do in a typical day?
Gemini: a natural match for Google routines
For eligible work or school accounts, Google documents Gemini Connected Apps for finding information in Gmail, summarizing Drive documents, finding or summarizing Google Chat information, and working with Tasks, Keep, and Calendar. Examples include finding proposed dates in an email, summarizing a Drive document, and creating a calendar event and task reminder. In a new conversation, state what you want Gemini to retrieve or add from Workspace. Naming the service or using its @ selector, plus useful keywords, can help direct the request. Once the relevant information is in the conversation, you generally do not need to repeat the instruction in every follow-up.

Personal Google Accounts have a different set of possible connections. Depending on location, language, device, and the Gemini app, these can include productivity tasks, music playback through supported services such as YouTube Music or Spotify, searching supported photo and video apps, grocery options and reservations, calls and messages on Android, and smart-home assistance. Gemini may also use public information from Search, Flights, Hotels, Maps, and YouTube; access to personal data in those services requires permission. ChatGPT: a broader in-chat app layer
ChatGPT apps can search connected services and reference their information, provide sources for Deep Research, offer interactive experiences such as maps, cards, or documents, and take actions supported by a particular app. Some apps can sync or index information in advance. You can select an app in the interface or mention it with @; ChatGPT may ask you to approve access before it reads data or performs an action. For Google Drive, ChatGPT can search files and reference Docs, Sheets, and Slides that the connected Google account can already access. Depending on the app’s permissions and your plan or workspace controls, supported actions may also include updating files. Creating, updating, moving, sharing, or deleting content requires the relevant permissions, and some actions may require confirmation. Individual Drive connections provide live access rather than a personal synced index; administrator-managed indexing is limited to eligible managed workspaces. Which is better for the tasks you actually do?
Choose by service and action, not by counting integrations. A connection is useful only if it covers the account and task you need, on the device and plan where you use it.

Read access and write access are different decisions
Finding a record, summarizing it, and changing it are separate capabilities. Before relying on either assistant for a workflow, check the exact operation the connected app supports and the permissions it requests. Provider permissions and workplace controls can further restrict access, and ChatGPT may request approval before reading information or taking an action.
Google specifically says Gemini Connected Apps cannot create Gmail drafts or delete Gmail messages; access Gmail comments or images; access pictures and videos in Drive through this Workspace connection; manage Drive folders; or count Gmail or Drive items and storage. These restrictions describe the Connected Apps connection, not every separate Gemini feature. Google’s Workspace connection details list the limitations.

For ChatGPT, the precise actions differ by app. A Drive connection may support changes only where the app, account permissions, and workspace controls allow them; certain operations can require confirmation. Do not treat “connected” as shorthand for unrestricted editing.

Account setup and availability can decide the winner
Google work or school accounts
Workspace access is not automatic for every organization. Google says work or school use requires a qualifying Workspace edition, Keep Activity enabled, and administrator enablement. Your organization’s settings therefore matter as much as the assistant’s feature list. Consult the Google Workspace requirements and check with your administrator if the connection is missing.

Personal Google Accounts and mobile tasks
Personal-account connections vary by location, language, device, and Gemini app. Some use cases, particularly calls and messages, are device-specific. Keep Activity settings affect access in several surfaces, so review the settings and the connected services shown in your own Gemini app rather than assuming every listed capability is available to you.
ChatGPT accounts and workspaces
OpenAI notes that connected app functionality can depend on the app, plan, region, workspace, role, model, and interface. Workspace controls and the provider account’s own permissions apply separately. Managed indexing is not the same as connecting an individual account: for Google Drive, administrator-managed indexing is available only to eligible managed workspaces, while an individual connection provides live access without creating a personal synced index. Check the current app menu and your workspace’s controls before planning around a feature.
How to make requests easier to verify
- Select the service. In Gemini or ChatGPT, choose the app in the interface or use
@where supported. This helps make clear which connected source you want to use. - Ask for a specific result. For example: “Find the date proposed in the latest email from Alex,” “Summarize the project brief in Drive,” or “Create a Calendar event for the agreed time and add a reminder.” For a write request, specify the intended change and destination.
- Check the source and action. Open cited files or records to confirm the assistant used the right item, especially when several versions or messages exist. Before approving a change, review its details and the account where it will be applied.
Google warns that Gemini can hallucinate or return outdated information, including an older email when a newer one exists, and advises checking the sources shown with a response. That is a practical reason to verify connected records whichever assistant you use; it is not evidence that one is more accurate than the other.
So, which works better?
- Start with Gemini if Gmail, Drive, Calendar, Tasks, or Keep anchor your routine, or if you want supported personal-account features such as media control or Android device tasks.
- Start with ChatGPT if you want to search across connected services, use supported apps as Deep Research sources, work with interactive in-chat app experiences, or take actions offered by a particular app.
- Compare the exact connection if you need a write action, use a managed work account, or depend on a specific device or region. Check the service, permissions, admin controls, and confirmation steps rather than relying on the integration’s name.
Vendor documentation describes features and access conditions, not comparative task-success rates, speed, or accuracy. There is no documented benchmark here that establishes a universal winner.
