On Android, Gemini can place WhatsApp calls and send WhatsApp messages while Gemini Apps Activity—now labeled Keep Activity—is turned off. That switch does not disconnect WhatsApp. It also does not give Gemini documented access to your complete WhatsApp chat history: Google says chat-history reading and summarizing are unsupported, although notification content can be handled through the separate Device assistance connection.
What Keep Activity controls—and what it does not
Keep Activity governs how Gemini activity is handled in Google’s Gemini services. Google’s current help documentation explicitly says WhatsApp calling and messaging can continue when the setting is off. Requests that depend on other Google services may behave differently.

The WhatsApp integration has its own connection control. Therefore, turning off Keep Activity is not a master switch for Gemini’s app permissions.

Google’s documented limitation is narrower than the headline claim that “Gemini can read WhatsApp.” Gemini cannot directly read or summarize your WhatsApp message history. However, message content appearing in notifications may be read or answered through the separate Device assistance app connection. That is notification access, not documented access to the entire conversation database.

The four controls to check
| Control | What it affects | What it does not automatically change |
|---|---|---|
| Keep Activity | Gemini activity handling and related history controls | Whether WhatsApp is connected |
| WhatsApp in Connected Apps | Gemini’s ability to request WhatsApp calls and messages | Device-assistance notification access or Google app contact permission |
| Device assistance | Access to notification content, including possible replies | The WhatsApp connection itself |
| Google app Contacts permission | Access to device contacts used for identifying people | WhatsApp messaging connection and notification access |
How to stop Gemini from using WhatsApp
- Open Gemini on your Android phone and open Connected Apps in its settings.
- Find WhatsApp and choose the option to disconnect it. Menu wording can change with app versions, so follow the current labels shown on your device.
- If you do not want notification-based reading or replies, review the Device assistance connection and turn it off where Android provides that control.
- To limit contact lookups, open Android’s app-permission settings for the Google app and review or revoke Contacts permission.
- Check Keep Activity separately. Turning it off may change activity handling, but Google says it does not by itself prevent WhatsApp calls or messages.
What happens to data when services are connected?
Google and WhatsApp describe separate responsibilities. Google says WhatsApp handles data it receives to fulfill a Gemini request under WhatsApp’s Privacy Policy. Google’s Gemini Privacy Hub describes Google’s collection and use of information from connected apps and device data such as contacts and call or message logs, and says some data may be reviewed by human reviewers for stated purposes. Those broad disclosures do not establish that every WhatsApp action exposes every field of every conversation.
Activity off is not the same as “nothing is retained”
Google’s August 13, 2025 explanation of Temporary Chats says they do not appear in recent chats or Gemini Apps Activity and are not used to personalize Gemini or train Google’s AI models. Google says Temporary Chats may nevertheless be kept for up to 72 hours to respond and process feedback. That retention window applies to Temporary Chats; it should not be generalized to all Gemini or WhatsApp activity.

In a July 8, 2025 report, TechRadar quoted a Google spokesperson saying: “With Gemini Apps Activity turned off, their Gemini chats are not being reviewed or used to improve our AI models.” That statement concerns Gemini chats and the activity setting; it does not remove the separate permissions and third-party policies described above.

Why users are concerned
The practical concern is control confusion: one privacy toggle can be off while an app integration remains active. Tuta described that situation as a privacy concern in TechRadar’s report. Google’s position is that activity controls and connected-app functions serve different purposes, not that all integrations disappear when history is disabled.

A safer way to think about the settings
- Want to stop WhatsApp requests? Disconnect WhatsApp in Connected Apps.
- Want to stop notification handling? Review Device assistance.
- Want to limit name and number lookups? Review Contacts permission for the Google app.
- Want different Gemini activity handling? Adjust Keep Activity independently.
- Want to know which company applies its policy? Identify whether the request is being handled by Google, WhatsApp, or both connected services.
These controls do not show that Google has access to every WhatsApp conversation, and the documented behavior does not indicate that WhatsApp’s end-to-end encryption has been defeated. They show that calling, messaging, notification assistance and activity history are separate paths.

If Keep Activity is off, can Gemini still send a WhatsApp message?
Yes. Google’s Android help says WhatsApp calls and messages can work with Keep Activity off. Disconnect WhatsApp under Gemini’s Connected Apps settings to stop that integration.

Google says direct reading or summarizing of WhatsApp message history is unsupported. Notification content may be handled through Device assistance, which is a separate connection.
Is turning off Keep Activity enough to block WhatsApp?
No. Keep Activity and Connected Apps are separate controls. Also review Device assistance and the Google app’s Contacts permission if those access paths concern you.
