Google has started rolling out a Gemini app prompt bar redesign on both Android and iOS. If you’ve recently updated (or you’re in the rollout window), you may notice changes to where you type, what shortcuts are available, and how prompts are submitted.
This guide explains what the new prompt bar is likely doing, how to confirm you’re actually seeing the updated UI, and what to do if it’s missing or acting strangely. It’s written to be usable whether you’re on a phone, a daily driver iPad, or an Android device with a customized keyboard.

What the Gemini prompt bar redesign is
The prompt bar is the input area you use to type or edit your message before sending it to Gemini. A redesign typically reshapes that input experience—layout, spacing, input actions, and sometimes how suggestions or attachments appear—without changing the core chat functionality.

Because rollout happens in stages, you might see the redesign on one device before another. That’s normal and often depends on app version, server-side feature flags, and your account cohort.
#1 Best Overall
- Attention-grabbing design meets the latest evolution of the Google Pixel Camera on the new Google Pixel 11 Pro; Gemini Intelligence helps manage details so you can live in the moment[1]; and the phone is available in two sizes
- Unlocked Android phone gives you the flexibility to change carriers and choose your own data plan: Works with Google Fi, Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, and other major carriers[2]
- Stay informed without looking at your screen: When your phone is face down, Pixel HiLight gently alerts you with subtle glowing lights when your favorite contacts are calling or you’re talking with Gemini; exclusive to Google Pixel 11 Pro phones
- Magic Capture catches the moment as you live it: With just one tap, Pixel 11 Pro captures video and photos, and automatically edits, crops, and unblurs a curated collection, ready to share – and you get the memory of how it felt to be in the moment
- Two new cameras for more brilliant photos: A larger telephoto sensor captures 30% more light for clear, beautiful photos and videos, even in the dark[3]; Pixel’s longest zoom ever helps you capture details from impressive distances[4]
Why the prompt bar matters (and what you’ll notice)
Small UI changes can affect how quickly you can keep a conversation going—especially when you’re doing follow-ups, copying text, or responding with longer prompts.
- Typing flow: the redesigned bar may adjust height, padding, and cursor behavior.
- Send controls: the send button’s placement or behavior can change (tap vs enter).
- Attachments and tools: icons for media, files, or quick actions may move or change style.
- Suggestion chips: prompt suggestions (if shown) can appear closer to the input line.
If you’ve been using Gemini for daily tasks—email drafts, homework explanations, travel planning—these changes usually make the compose-and-send loop faster, but they can also expose edge cases on certain keyboard apps.
Check whether the redesign is available on your device
You can’t force the redesign instantly, but you can confirm what you’re seeing. The goal is to verify your Gemini app is updated and that the new prompt bar UI is present.
- Open Gemini.
- Go to the Settings screen (often via your profile icon or the menu).
- Look for an About or App version entry.
- Compare what you see on the bottom or near the message input area to screenshots from recent rollout reports or your own memory of the previous bar.
If the prompt bar looks unchanged, it may simply be waiting on your rollout cohort even after updating.
How to update Gemini on Android
On Android, the redesign is typically tied to the Google Play distribution version. Update to the latest Gemini build and then re-check the prompt area.
- Open Google Play Store.
- Search for Gemini.
- Tap Update if you see it (or confirm you have the latest version).
- After updating, close Gemini completely (use the app switcher to swipe it away).
- Reopen Gemini and check the prompt bar.
Android keyboards and custom layouts can affect the prompt bar height and send behavior, so also test with the default Gboard if you’re seeing input glitches.

How to update Gemini on iOS
On iOS, you’ll want the current Gemini app build from the App Store. Then restart the app and verify the new prompt bar appears where you type.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Open the App Store on your iPhone or iPad.
- Search for Gemini.
- Tap Update if available.
- Force-close Gemini (swipe it away in the app switcher).
- Reopen Gemini and inspect the prompt bar at the bottom of the chat.
If your device is on Low Power Mode, connectivity is spotty, or you’re on a restrictive network, the UI rollout may lag slightly because feature flags may not load cleanly.
Using the new prompt bar on Android
Once the redesign appears, the prompt bar should feel familiar: type, edit, and send your message. The details may be different, so focus on how send and editing behave.
- Tap the prompt bar to bring up your keyboard.
- Type your message normally. If the bar supports it, use any visible input shortcuts (such as icons for additional actions).
- Send your message using the send control in the bar.
- Test quick follow-ups: send a short message, then immediately type another without leaving the chat.
- Check editing: highlight text in the prompt bar and confirm the cursor moves as expected.
If the send button seems unresponsive, try clearing the prompt bar text and retyping a short message. That isolates whether you have a text-entry edge case.
Using the new prompt bar on iOS
On iPhone and iPad, the redesigned prompt bar should align with iOS keyboard expectations. Watch for changes in “send” behavior and text selection.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Open the Gemini chat you’re using most often.
- Tap in the prompt bar and type a message.
- Send using the bar’s send button.
- Try selecting part of your text and editing it mid-message.
- Test copy/paste: paste a paragraph and confirm it displays correctly before sending.
On iPad with external keyboards, the redesign may change how the Enter key behaves. If Enter sends unexpectedly, look for an option in iOS keyboard settings or rely on the in-app send button.
Common behaviors you should expect
Rollout UIs often keep the underlying chat logic the same, but the interaction patterns can change. These are the most common “new normal” behaviors.
- Auto-resizing input: the prompt bar may expand slightly for multi-line prompts.
- Enter vs send: sending might require tapping the send icon instead of using Enter/Return.
- Suggestions proximity: prompt ideas may appear closer to the typing line.
- Less wasted space: spacing and alignment changes can reduce the amount of time your keyboard covers earlier messages.
- Fewer taps for attachments: tool icons (if present) can move into the prompt bar itself.
Troubleshooting when the redesign doesn’t show up
If you don’t see the new prompt bar even after updating, it’s usually a rollout timing issue. Here’s the fastest way to get to a reliable answer.
- Confirm you updated: check the app version in Gemini settings (or the store page).
- Wait for server-side rollout: staged rollouts can take days or weeks.
- Switch networks: try Wi‑Fi vs cellular to force a fresh feature-flag fetch.
- Restart the app: force-close and reopen after updating.
- Log out/in: if nothing changes, sign out and back in to refresh account settings.
Common mistake: reinstalling too early and assuming that’s what triggers the UI. The redesign is typically controlled server-side, not just by the app binary.
Troubleshooting when the prompt bar is broken or inconsistent
If the redesign appears but you’re seeing problems—like text not appearing, the send button failing, or the input area jumping—try these targeted fixes.
1) Keyboard conflicts
Custom keyboard apps can break focus behavior. Test with the default keyboard for a minute.
- Temporarily switch keyboards (Android: Gboard; iOS: Apple’s default keyboard).
- Restart Gemini.
- Re-test typing and tapping send.
2) Clear the prompt and retype
If only one message input is misbehaving, isolate the text-entry path.

- Delete everything in the prompt bar.
- Type a short sentence (e.g., “Test send”).
- Send it and verify the response arrives.
3) Check connectivity and app permissions
Some prompt bar features may depend on permissions (like storage access) or on network calls.

4) Reinstall (last resort)
Reinstalling can reset local UI state. If the redesign is half-loaded or stuck, this can help.
- Uninstall Gemini.
- Restart the device.
- Install the latest Gemini from the store.
- Sign in and verify the prompt bar.
Safety, privacy, and data controls with the redesigned UI
The prompt bar redesign is mostly an interface change, but it can still affect what you accidentally tap—especially if new icons appear. Treat the redesigned UI as “new controls” and verify your settings.
- Review chat history controls: check Gemini’s settings for how prompts and responses are stored and used.
- Be careful with attachments: if the redesigned bar surfaces upload icons, confirm what gets shared before sending.
- Watch for clipboard paste: if you copy sensitive text, pasting into the prompt bar doesn’t automatically redact it.
If you’re unsure which settings are available on your app version, open Gemini Settings and look for categories related to privacy, activity, and permissions.

FAQs
Will the redesign change my chat history or prompts?
Usually, the redesign is UI-only. Your existing chats remain, and your prompts should behave the same—unless a feature flag affects input tools (like attachments).
Can I force the prompt bar redesign on Android or iOS?
You can’t reliably force a server-side rollout. The best you can do is update the app, restart it, and refresh your network connection.
Why does it show up on one device but not the other?
Staged rollouts often use device- and account-level flags. It’s common to see the new prompt bar on iPhone but not Android (or vice versa) until the next wave hits.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
My send button doesn’t respond. What should I do first?
Test with a short new message after clearing the prompt bar. If it works with a short message, focus on your specific text (length, pasted content, or formatting) or check keyboard compatibility.
Does this redesign affect how I submit voice or images?
If the redesign surfaces tools differently, voice or image inputs may be accessed via new icons. Behavior should remain consistent, but your exact entry point may change.
Final Thoughts
The Gemini app prompt bar redesign on Android and iOS is mainly about improving the compose-and-send experience. If you’ve received the update, take a minute to test typing, editing, and sending—especially with your usual keyboard and any attachment workflows.
If you don’t see it yet, updating the app and waiting for rollout is the realistic path. When the prompt bar appears but misbehaves, keyboard conflicts and stale app state are the most common culprits—so start with the simplest input tests before reinstalling.
