The feature this headline most likely refers to is Gemini’s memory of past chats: Google says Gemini can use earlier conversations to personalize responses. That interpretation is an inference—the title does not name the feature—and memory is not identical across Gemini, Claude, and ChatGPT.
What Gemini memory does
Google describes Gemini memory as using past Gemini chats to understand you and tailor responses. It may also suggest follow-up tasks based on previous conversations. This is ongoing cross-chat personalization, not simply a way to search an old conversation.

Google’s current Gemini Apps Help page says the feature requires a personal Google Account, an account holder aged 18 or older, and Keep Activity turned on. It is unavailable for work, school, and supervised accounts, and Google says some experiences—including Gems and Live chats—do not support it. The documented surfaces include Gemini mobile and web apps, Gemini in Chrome where available, and Gemini on a smartwatch; availability can vary by account and product rollout.
How to control what Gemini remembers
- Turn memory off: Use Gemini settings to switch off the memory feature.
- Review or delete conversations: Open Gemini Apps Activity to inspect and delete past chats. Google cautions that a deleted chat may take a short time to stop affecting personalization.
- Correct a detail: Tell Gemini directly in a chat what it should understand or correct.
- Ask about its context: Ask Gemini whether it used information from past chats.
Connected apps require particular care: Google says disconnecting an app alone may not remove information already present in a past chat, while deleting chats alone may leave information in the connected app.

Google’s earlier Temporary Chats announcement said those chats would not appear in recent chats or Gemini Apps Activity and would not be used to personalize Gemini or train Google’s AI models. It also said they could be kept for up to 72 hours to respond and process feedback. That is a dated product announcement, not a guarantee of today’s terms; check the current in-app privacy information before relying on it.
Gemini’s two ways to bring information from another AI assistant
In a March 26, 2026 Gemini announcement, Google described two import options and said they were starting to roll out. They solve different problems:

Import a compact preference summary
Ask the other assistant to summarize what it knows about your preferences and context, then paste that summary into Gemini. This transfers a concise set of useful details, not the original conversation archive.

Upload a chat-history archive
Google also described uploading a ZIP of chat history from another AI provider, then searching those conversations or continuing threads in Gemini. This is an archive-based route rather than a short memory summary. Since Google described both as rolling out, access should not be assumed on every account.

How Gemini compares with Claude and ChatGPT
All three products offer ways for context to carry across interactions, but their documented features and controls differ. The comparison is about capabilities, not a claim that they use the same memory system.

What to consider before switching
If the useful part of Claude or ChatGPT for you is that an assistant can carry preferences forward, Gemini now documents a version of that capability. The practical differences are how context is sourced, how clearly you can inspect and correct it, and whether you can transfer existing information. Gemini’s chat-history import may help with continuity, but Google’s rollout announcement does not establish universal availability or promise an identical transfer of every provider’s data.

For a privacy-sensitive conversation, look for the relevant temporary or incognito option and verify what it does in the product’s current terms. For ongoing personalization, review the account eligibility and activity settings before troubleshooting: a work or school account, a supervised account, age eligibility, or disabled Keep Activity can determine whether Gemini memory is available.
