Google announced Argon on September 30, 2026, with a phased rollout beginning through its Fairwind program for trusted cyber defenders; it did not give a firm date for general availability. Astra and Opus 5.5 have documented subscription, API, and cloud access routes, making them practical alternatives for many users.
Can you use Gemini 4 Argon now?
At its September 30, 2026 announcement, Google said Argon was rolling out to trusted cyber defenders through Fairwind, with broader access planned for developers, enterprises, and consumers, starting with paid API customers and Google AI Ultra subscribers. That announcement describes the rollout at that time, not a guarantee of present eligibility. Check Google’s current product pages for availability before choosing a model.

Fairwind’s program page describes selected partners using Argon in CodeMender for vulnerability research and patching. It also says managed Argon access through Gemini Enterprise supports zero data retention. These are specific program routes, not evidence of general public access.

#1 Best Overall
| Model | Documented access routes | Published API pricing | Published context window |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gemini 4 Argon | Fairwind for selected trusted cyber defenders; Google said paid API customers and Google AI Ultra subscribers would be among the first broader-access groups. See Google’s announcement and Fairwind. | Google announced introductory rates of $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens, with cached input tokens 95% below the input rate. It said later rates would be $4 per million input and $20 per million output; the announcement did not state when introductory pricing ends. Google announcement. | not stated in the cited announcement |
| GPT-6 Astra | Rolling out to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise users; also through the OpenAI API, Microsoft Azure, and AWS Bedrock. OpenAI announcement. | $10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output tokens. OpenAI API model page. | 1,050,000 tokens. OpenAI API model page. |
| Claude Opus 5.5 | Claude Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise; Claude Platform, AWS, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Foundry. Anthropic model page. | $4 per million input tokens and $20 per million output tokens. Anthropic model page. | not stated in the cited source |
Token rates are not a complete cost comparison: subscription limits, output length, caching, and the number of repeated attempts can change what a task costs in practice. Argon’s announced introductory and later rates are dated announcement figures, so verify Google’s live rate card before budgeting.
Which model fits your work?
Repository-level coding and complex reasoning
All three are positioned for demanding software or reasoning work. Google describes Argon as a model for complex software engineering and says its employees use it for coding. OpenAI presents Astra for complex reasoning, coding, computer use, research, and document creation; Anthropic positions Opus 5.5 for coding and professional work. These are provider descriptions, not independent proof that one will perform best on your repository.
Google’s published benchmark table reports Argon at 77.9% on DeepSWE v1.1, versus 74.1% for GPT-6 Astra and 74.2% for Claude Opus 5.5. These are Google’s reported results on that benchmark and do not guarantee results on a particular codebase.

Terminal-heavy work
For workflows centered on command-line tasks, Google’s reported Terminal-bench 4.0 results put Claude Opus 5.5 at 66.4% and Argon at 57.4%. That comparison is useful as a reason to evaluate Opus for terminal-heavy work, not as a universal ranking: benchmark setups may differ from your tools, instructions, and repository.
Long documents, research, and multimodal input
Astra’s listed 1,050,000-token context window is a concrete advantage to consider when a task involves a very large text input. Google reports Argon at 91.7% on LVBench, compared with 87.5% for Astra and 83.7% for Opus 5.5. That is a Google-published benchmark result, not a guarantee for analyzing any particular video, image, or document. Confirm supported input types and context limits in the service you plan to use.
For research and document creation, Astra is explicitly described by OpenAI as supporting research and document creation, while Google names enterprise knowledge work such as legal and finance for Argon. Choose based on the documents and modalities you actually need to submit, and verify the model’s available tools and data-handling terms in your approved service.
Everyday questions
For routine questions, drafting, or summaries, the most important difference may be whether you already have access through a subscription, and whether its limits and privacy terms suit you. The cited provider descriptions and benchmark scores do not establish a universal everyday-use winner. Start with the service you can readily access and test representative prompts before paying for a new route.

- Confirm availability. Check whether your intended subscription, API account, or approved cloud platform actually offers the model; Argon’s September 2026 announcement described a phased rollout.
- Match the task. Separate repository changes, terminal operations, document analysis, and casual assistance. A result on one benchmark is not a substitute for testing your actual workload.
- Check inputs and context. If you routinely provide lengthy files, images, or video, confirm the service’s supported modalities and limits. Astra’s API listing states a 1,050,000-token context window; the cited Argon and Opus sources do not state comparable window figures.
- Estimate total cost. Include subscription charges or API input and output use, caching where applicable, and likely retries. Compare the current rate cards rather than assuming Argon’s announced introductory price is still active.
- Evaluate privately and consistently. Use a small set of representative tasks and the same instructions across candidates. For code, inspect correctness and whether changes pass your tests; for research, verify claims against primary documents. Do not submit sensitive work to a service unless its terms and your organization’s policy allow it.
What the available comparisons can—and cannot—tell you
The published figures above come from Google and therefore should be read as provider-reported benchmark results. The sources cited here do not establish an independent, cross-provider evaluation or hands-on results for everyday users. Benchmark percentages reflect particular tasks and setups; they cannot tell you whether a model will follow your team’s conventions, cite sources reliably, or make safe changes in your environment.
Google’s own figures show Argon ahead of Astra and Opus 5.5 on the reported DeepSWE v1.1 and LVBench comparisons, but behind Opus 5.5 on Terminal-bench 4.0. That mixed picture is a reason to select by task and verify performance on your own representative work—not to treat any one score as a general winner.
