In the reported GeForce RTX 5070 Ti eGPU comparison, OCuLink was faster than Thunderbolt 5. OCuLink delivered higher measured transfer rates and about 13–14% higher average gaming performance across 12 games. Thunderbolt 5 remains the easier, cleaner connection when a compatible host and enclosure matter more than extracting the last performance from the GPU.

What the reported comparison tested

Try Some Tech’s comparison, summarized by Tom’s Hardware in 2025, tested the same GeForce RTX 5070 Ti through three paths: a direct desktop PCIe connection, OCuLink and Thunderbolt 5. The test platform used an Intel Core Ultra 7 265K and a Peladn Link S-3 eGPU enclosure. Notebookcheck also identifies the Peladn Link S-3 and reports that Thunderbolt 5 produced noticeably fewer frames than OCuLink or the native desktop connection.

Why OCuLink leads Thunderbolt 5

OCuLink is a more direct PCIe-oriented connection. Thunderbolt 5 transports PCIe through a broader protocol stack, so controller work and usable-bandwidth limits remain even though Thunderbolt 5 is substantially newer and faster than earlier Thunderbolt generations. With a high-end RTX 5070 Ti, those limits can become visible when the GPU is frequently exchanging data with system memory.

The size of the loss depends on more than the connector name. Workloads that stream assets, synchronize frequently with the CPU or otherwise move substantial data across the link can show a larger gap than workloads that keep most data resident in GPU memory.

Is Thunderbolt 5 fast enough for an RTX 5070 Ti eGPU?

Choose Thunderbolt 5 when convenience is the priority

Thunderbolt 5 is a reasonable choice if the computer already exposes a compatible Thunderbolt 5 port and you value a simple, flexible external setup. Its single-cable workflow can be more attractive than building around a dedicated eGPU link, particularly when the system, enclosure and peripherals are designed to work together.

Choose OCuLink when performance is the priority

OCuLink is the stronger choice when the host provides a suitable port and your goal is to keep an RTX 5070 Ti as close as practical to desktop performance. The reported comparison shows both higher usable transfer rates and higher frame rates for OCuLink than for Thunderbolt 5.

Do not expect either link to equal an internal desktop slot automatically

A direct desktop PCIe connection remained the reference in the comparison. An eGPU link adds an external connection and its associated controllers, so neither OCuLink nor Thunderbolt 5 should be treated as an unconditional replacement for an internal slot.

Compatibility checks before you buy

  • Confirm the host port: A USB-C-shaped connector is not enough. Verify that the computer specifically supports Thunderbolt 5 for a Thunderbolt enclosure or exposes a usable OCuLink connection for an OCuLink dock.
  • Check PCIe wiring and firmware: Host BIOS settings, enclosure firmware and the platform’s PCIe implementation can alter performance and stability.
  • Match the enclosure to the card: Verify the RTX 5070 Ti’s physical dimensions, power connectors and the enclosure’s available PSU capacity before ordering.
  • Use the intended display path: Whether an external monitor is connected directly to the eGPU can affect results, so compare systems using the same display arrangement.
  • Keep software consistent: Driver versions, game patches, resolution, graphics preset and frame-rate caps can change the measured gap.
  • Verify the cable: Use the cable type specified by the dock or enclosure manufacturer; do not assume that any visually similar cable supports the required link.

A separate manufacturer reference result

Goodway Technology’s CES 2026 datasheet describes a Thunderbolt 5 eGPU dock with an integrated 850 W power supply. It lists reference FurMark results of 131 FPS for a desktop system and 132 FPS for the eGPU dock, both using an RTX 5070 Ti.

Those numbers are manufacturer-supplied reference figures from a FurMark test. They do not independently verify the OCuLink-versus-Thunderbolt 5 gaming comparison and should not be combined with the 12-game results as though they were measured under the same conditions.

How much confidence should you place in the percentages?

The direction of the result is clear in the available reports: OCuLink led Thunderbolt 5 in the tested RTX 5070 Ti setup, and Thunderbolt 5 was below both OCuLink and the native desktop connection. The exact size of the gap is more conditional.

  • The accessible reports do not provide a complete reproducibility log for every driver, BIOS option, game preset, frame-time method and enclosure-firmware version.
  • Different resolutions and refresh targets can move a workload from GPU-limited to link-sensitive.
  • Game patches and driver updates can change frame rates after the original comparison.
  • Internal PCIe wiring and the way the display is connected can change the overhead of an eGPU installation.

Use the reported percentages as a practical indication of the trade-off, not as a universal performance guarantee for every RTX 5070 Ti eGPU build.

Verdict

For an RTX 5070 Ti eGPU, OCuLink is the performance-first interface in this reported comparison. Thunderbolt 5 is slower, but it can still be the better purchase when host compatibility, enclosure availability and a simpler single-cable setup outweigh the performance difference. If the computer offers both choices and gaming speed is the deciding factor, the measured evidence favors OCuLink.
