Some Radeon users have reported that IL-2 Sturmovik: 1946 loses OpenGL features—most notably Perfect landscape rendering and HardwareShaders—after updating beyond AMD Adrenalin 22.5.1. The clearest report followed an upgrade to 22.11.2, but this is not evidence that every Radeon card or every newer driver is affected. Results vary by GPU, Windows build, game or mod version, and the exact symptom.
What the reported problem looks like
An AMD Community user said IL-2 1946 had working OpenGL Perfect landscape and hardware shaders on 22.5.1, then stopped providing those options or rendering modes after installing 22.11.2. That example used a Radeon RX 6900 XT, Ryzen 9 5900X, 32 GB of RAM, and BAT 4.2.2 with a hotfix. It is a user experience, not a controlled comparison of identical systems.

Other players describe the symptom differently: OpenGL games may launch without the expected anti-aliasing, fail to use a selected rendering option, show degraded visuals, or have launch and stability problems. Those are related reports, not proof of one single defect. Identify the exact failing feature before changing drivers.
What AMD has—and has not—confirmed
An AMD Community staff account, peruka93, wrote on February 26, 2024: “Fix is ready. Expect to be included in one of the future driver releases.” The post did not name the driver version containing the fix, and later discussion included inconsistent results. Therefore, no specific current Adrenalin release can be identified from that statement as a universal solution.

AMD’s Adrenalin 22.5.1 release notes list Windows driver version 21.50.21.11 and supported Radeon families for Windows 10 and Windows 11. They do not mention IL-2 1946 or a dedicated OpenGL correction. The 22.5.2 notes list driver version 22.10.17.01 and selected DirectX 11 performance claims; those benchmarks do not establish anything about IL-2’s OpenGL behavior.
Check your configuration before diagnosing
- Record the GPU and driver. In Radeon Software, open the settings or system-information page and note the exact Adrenalin package. In Windows, Device Manager can provide a second driver-version check.
- Record Windows and the game build. Include the Windows edition and build, IL-2 1946 version, launcher, and every major mod or patch (for example, BAT and its hotfix).
- Describe one symptom precisely. Is Perfect landscape unavailable, does
HardwareShadersfail, is anti-aliasing absent, or does the game crash or refuse to start? These may require different remedies. - Back up configuration files. Copy the game’s settings and profile files before editing them or reinstalling a driver. Test only one change at a time so you can identify what altered the result.
Recovery options, from least invasive to most involved

For a rollback, use AMD’s normal uninstall and installation guidance and select the exact package appropriate for your GPU and Windows version. Laptop and all-in-one owners should prefer the manufacturer’s driver when AMD’s generic package causes compatibility problems.

About the community library workaround
Posts on SAS1946 and Reddit describe copying an older OpenGL library, including one report that used the library from 22.5.2 while retaining a newer driver. These are community techniques, not AMD instructions. A library can depend on the exact driver branch, 32-bit versus 64-bit game executable, Windows loader behavior, and mod installation. Do not download DLLs from unknown mirrors, disable security protections, or apply a registry redirection without a backup and a way to reverse it.
If you test such a method, keep a pristine copy of the game directory, change one file or redirection at a time, and remove the change immediately if other OpenGL applications, Radeon Software, or the game launcher behave abnormally.

Choose a rollback when
- Perfect landscape and hardware shaders worked on 22.5.1 on the same installation.
- IL-2 is the priority and you do not need fixes delivered by the newer package.
- You can obtain the correct package for your GPU and Windows edition.
Stay on the current driver when
- Newer games, security updates, or recently released hardware depend on it.
- Your IL-2 symptom is intermittent or limited to one mod, making a driver change an uncertain experiment.
- You are not prepared to maintain an unofficial library workaround.
What would make a diagnosis reliable
When asking AMD or the IL-2 community for help, provide the GPU model, exact installed driver (not merely “latest”), Windows build, game and mod versions, renderer selection, and a concise description of the visual or launch failure. State whether the same installation worked on 22.5.1 and whether a clean game profile changes the result. This information separates a driver regression from a configuration, mod, or anti-aliasing-specific problem.
Bottom line
The evidence supports a real, acknowledged compatibility report affecting some IL-2 1946 OpenGL configurations after 22.5.1, not a blanket failure of all post-22.5.1 Radeon drivers. AMD said a fix was ready in February 2024 but did not identify the release that shipped it. Start with records and reversible tests; then choose a supported rollback, an OEM package where appropriate, or—only with backups and realistic expectations—a community workaround.
