This page records HotHardware’s April 12, 2023 game benchmarks and DLSS 3 testing for the GeForce RTX 4070. In that test setup, the card generally matched the RTX 3080 at 1440p rasterized gaming, traded places with older high-end cards depending on the game, and benefited substantially from DLSS. The $599 figure was NVIDIA’s launch starting price in 2023, not a current street-price claim.
What this page tested
Marco Chiappetta’s HotHardware review page reports results from several games at 1440p and 4K, plus an F1 22 test using DLSS. The rankings below apply to those games, settings, drivers, CPUs and review-era conditions; a different patch, processor or driver can change the order.

RTX 4070 gaming results
Final Fantasy XIV: Endwalker
At 1440p, the RTX 4070-series cards performed about on par with the GeForce RTX 3080 and ahead of the RTX 3070 Ti. At 4K, the RTX 3080 moved ahead. This is a useful example of resolution changing the relative result rather than a fixed hierarchy applying everywhere.

Assassin’s Creed Valhalla
In HotHardware’s Valhalla results, the RTX 4070 cards overtook the RTX 3090. That ranking describes this game and the review’s test configuration, not a universal RTX 3090 replacement claim.
#1 Best Overall
- Powered by NVIDIA DLSS 3, ultra-efficient Ada Lovelace architechture, and full ray tracing
- 4th Generation Tensor Cores: Up to 4x performance with DLSS 3
- 3rd Generation RT Cores: Up to 2x ray tracing performance
- Powered by GeForce RTX 4070
- Integrated with 12GB GDDR6X 192-bit memory interface
Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy
The RTX 4070 cards landed between the RTX 3080 and RTX 3070 Ti at both tested resolutions.
Far Cry 6
HotHardware cautioned that its 1440p Far Cry 6 numbers were affected by a CPU limitation. At 4K, the RTX 4070 cards were ahead of the RTX 3070 Ti and close to the RTX 3080, where the graphics card was less constrained by the processor.

How the RTX 4070 compared with other GPUs
Tom’s Hardware’s independent suite also placed RTX 4070 rasterization broadly around RTX 3080 level. Its results show why the test type matters: the Radeon RX 6950 XT was faster in rasterized rendering, while the RTX 4070 was faster in that outlet’s demanding ray-tracing (DXR) suite.

| Comparison | Result reported | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| RTX 4070 vs. RTX 3080, rasterization | Broadly equivalent in Tom’s Hardware’s suite; about on par at 1440p in HotHardware’s Final Fantasy XIV test | Outlet-specific results from April 2023 |
| RTX 4070 vs. RTX 3080, 4K | RTX 3080 ahead in HotHardware’s Final Fantasy XIV test; RTX 4070 close in Far Cry 6 | Varies by game and CPU limitation |
| RTX 4070 vs. RTX 3070 Ti | RTX 4070 ahead in Final Fantasy XIV at 1440p and Far Cry 6 at 4K; between RTX 3080 and 3070 Ti in Guardians of the Galaxy | Specific game and resolution results |
| RTX 4070 vs. RTX 3090 | RTX 4070 ahead in HotHardware’s Assassin’s Creed Valhalla result | Not a universal ranking |
| RTX 4070 vs. Radeon RX 6950 XT | RX 6950 XT faster in Tom’s Hardware rasterization; RTX 4070 faster in its demanding DXR suite | Different workloads favor different architectures |
| Memory and power versus RTX 3080 | Tom’s Hardware described RTX 4070 as having 20% more memory and lower power use | Those are that outlet’s comparative findings; exact values depend on the models and test method |
DLSS 3 and the F1 22 result
In HotHardware’s F1 22 test, enabling DLSS in Quality mode raised the minimum frame rate above 60 frames per second. The page also reports a test-specific anomaly: Frame Generation behaved properly only in Ultra Performance mode, while the other modes returned the same results. The reviewer said the behavior was still under investigation. Treat that as an observation from this 2023 test, not as a general description of how Frame Generation works on every current driver, game version or mode.
Rank #3
- AI Performance: 767 AI TOPS
- OC mode: 2632 MHz (OC mode)/ 2602 MHz (Default mode)
- Powered by the NVIDIA Blackwell architecture and DLSS 4
- Axial-tech fan design features a smaller fan hub that facilitates longer blades and a barrier ring that increases downward air pressure
- A 2.5-slot design maximizes compatibility and cooling efficiency for superior performance in small chassis
What NVIDIA claimed at launch
NVIDIA announced a $599 starting price on April 12, 2023, and said the RTX 4070 ran most modern games at more than 100 frames per second at 1440p. Those are launch-era vendor statements, not an independent current performance or price guarantee. NVIDIA also reported that 83% of GeForce RTX 40 Series desktop gamers enabled ray tracing and 79% enabled DLSS; the announcement did not explain the survey methodology. Matt Wuebbling, NVIDIA’s vice president of global GeForce marketing, said that making games “RTX ON” with ray tracing and DLSS had become a top priority for most PC gamers. Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to interpret these benchmarks today
- Use the 1440p results when your processor can feed the GPU and your target is high-refresh gaming; CPU limits can hide graphics-card differences.
- Expect 4K results to diverge more by workload. The RTX 3080 pulled ahead in Final Fantasy XIV, while the RTX 4070 stayed close in Far Cry 6.
- Separate native rasterization from ray tracing. Tom’s Hardware found the RX 6950 XT faster in raster work but the RTX 4070 faster in its DXR suite.
- DLSS can materially change playable frame rates, but the benefit depends on game support and the selected mode. The F1 22 Frame Generation behavior documented by HotHardware was an unresolved review-era issue.
- Do not use the historical $599 launch price as a current buying benchmark. A present-day purchase requires checking the exact board-partner card, stock, cooler size, power connector, warranty and live price.
