The product commonly called “3dfx Voodoo33000 PCI” is the 3dfx Voodoo3 3000 PCI, a 16 MB legacy PCI graphics card. It is not the AGP model. A historical HotHardware review published December 15, 2001 documents its period specifications and Windows 98-era behavior, but does not establish compatibility with modern PCs or operating systems.

What the Voodoo3 3000 PCI is

“Voodoo33000” appears to combine the brand and model name or reflect a title typo. The identifiable product is the Voodoo3 3000 PCI, a discrete graphics card designed for a conventional PCI slot. That interface matters: it cannot be installed in an AGP slot, and an AGP motherboard without a suitable PCI slot is not an appropriate host.

The card belongs to 3dfx’s late-1990s graphics generation. Its documented software APIs include DirectX, Glide and OpenGL, with hardware features aimed at the games and operating systems of that period.

Review-era specifications

The following figures are specifications reported by HotHardware’s December 15, 2001 review, not new measurements or guarantees for every board revision.

PCI versus AGP and video outputs

The review describes the PCI and Voodoo3 3000 AGP versions as broadly similar apart from their bus interface and market positioning. It specifically states that the PCI card lacks TV output. Because connector layouts can vary by board revision or third-party production, inspect photographs or the actual card rather than assuming every example has identical outputs. Confirm the connector is undamaged and that the seller’s description matches the board.

What the historical test actually showed

HotHardware tested a sample in a Soyo SY-6BA+III motherboard with an Intel Celeron 300A, 96 MB of PC100 memory, a 5 GB Maxtor UDMA33 drive, Windows 98 SE and DirectX 7. After instability and visual artifacts appeared at 190 MHz, the reviewer tried 180 MHz. Those observations apply to that sample and setup; they are not a safe overclocking recommendation, a guaranteed clock for other cards, or a modern benchmark.

Buying a Voodoo3 3000 PCI today

Current stock, pricing, seller quality and return policies are not established here. Treat any listing as a used vintage component and verify the exact item before paying.

Check the interface first

  • Confirm the listing says PCI, not AGP or PCI Express.
  • Check that your target motherboard has a compatible conventional PCI slot and suitable clearance.

Identify the exact board

  • Compare the PCB, bracket, memory arrangement and connectors with the listing photographs.
  • Ask whether TV output is present; the reviewed PCI model was reported without it.

Assess condition and testing

  • Look for corrosion, cracked components, repaired traces, missing screws and damaged connectors.
  • Prefer a seller who states that the card produces a stable image and identifies the test platform.
  • Read the return terms carefully; an untested card is not equivalent to a tested working card.

Match the card to the intended software

Decide which legacy operating system, drivers and API your games require. The period review documents Windows 98 SE and DirectX 7, but it does not establish driver availability or reliable operation under current Windows, Linux distributions or modern firmware.

Is it suitable for a modern computer?

There is no evidence in the cited review that the Voodoo3 3000 PCI works in a contemporary computer or operating system. A motherboard having a slot that physically accepts a PCI card does not by itself provide working drivers, initialization or game support. For a modern machine, verify the specific motherboard, firmware behavior, operating system and driver path before buying; otherwise, a period-correct retro system is the more defensible use case.

Bottom line

The 3dfx Voodoo3 3000 PCI is a historically significant 16 MB PCI accelerator with 166 MHz core and 350 MHz RAMDAC specifications documented in a 2001 review. Buy one for a compatible legacy build only after confirming the PCI interface, exact board revision, outputs, tested condition and return protection. The available evidence does not support treating it as a plug-and-play option for modern PCs.
