Is E-Day a sequel to Gears 5?
No. Gears of War: E-Day is a prequel set 14 years before the original Gears of War. Xbox describes it as the story of Marcus and Dom during the Locust Horde’s first emergence. Gears 5 takes place later in the conflict and follows Kait Diaz as she investigates her connection to the enemy. The games therefore differ in both chronology and central characters, rather than presenting consecutive chapters of one campaign. Xbox’s E-Day listing and its Gears 5 listing describe those campaign premises.

How do campaign co-op and player counts compare?
The advertised campaign co-op limits differ. Gears 5 supports three-player campaign co-op online or in split-screen. E-Day is listed for solo play, two-player split-screen, or up to four players online. That four-player online campaign limit is separate from Horde Siege’s larger multiplayer count.

What changes about movement and combat?
The announced direction keeps cover-based combat central while adding more ways to move around a fight. Xbox describes E-Day as retaining the series’ cover combat and modernizing movement and traversal. In an official Xbox Podcast interview, The Coalition Studio Creative Director Matt Searcy said, “we added a jump button to Gears”. He explained that the addition is intended to open flanking routes while preserving the series’ heavy feel. How do the PvE and Versus options differ?
PvE: Horde and Escape versus Horde Siege
Gears 5 offers Horde and Escape. E-Day introduces Horde Siege, which Xbox describes as a 12-player PvE mode divided into three squads. That figure refers to Horde Siege, not the campaign co-op limit. Xbox’s announcement establishes the mode’s advertised scale, but does not provide a basis here for judging its balance or how it compares in practice with Gears 5’s modes. Competitive play: Versus remains in both
Both games include Versus. Xbox describes E-Day’s Versus as returning with refined 4v4 modes and updated movement; Gears 5 has a broader set of Versus modes and content. These announced feature descriptions do not establish which game has the better competitive feel or a more active player community.

Xbox lists Gears 5 for Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Windows 10/11. Its E-Day listing names Xbox Series X|S and Windows 10/11, while Xbox Wire also names Steam. If you are choosing a platform, check the store listing for the version and region you intend to use.

Xbox’s product pages also make performance claims, but they are not directly comparable benchmarks. The current E-Day listing advertises up to 4K/60 FPS across campaign and multiplayer. The Gears 5 listing cites Series X|S updates, including 120 FPS in Versus and 4K HDR Ultra visuals on Series X.
