For Horde Siege, Assault, Marksman, Medic, and Breacher are the four roles to weigh against your squad’s needs and mission objectives—not a verified performance ranking. For Versus, those Horde Siege roles do not establish a class tier list: it is a separate 4v4 mode with equal starting loadout weapons and equipment. The recommendations below are a practical, provisional framework, not measured results.
How to read this E-Day class tier list
The official class lineup names Assault, Marksman, Medic, and Breacher, but its order is not a ranking. The Coalition says the classes are intended to complement one another, while also stating: “there is no ‘right’ way to set up a squad.” It even invites players to try a squad of four Breachers. That makes a mission- and team-based ranking more useful than a fixed universal tier list. The Coalition’s Gears of War: E-Day Multiplayer Deep Dive supports flexible squad composition; it does not publish comparative class performance figures.

The framework here asks which role may fit a squad’s objective, the threats in its mission, and the other players’ choices. Those are editorial criteria inferred from the official mode descriptions, not measured class advantages. No named, dated class win-rate or pick-rate figures are established by the cited official sources.
Horde Siege: rank classes by what your squad needs
Horde Siege is a 12-player PvE mode built around three squads of four on larger shared maps. Official descriptions mention individual missions, shared objectives, world bosses, and optional objectives that reward the squad. Xbox Wire’s June 7, 2026 overview and its July 30, 2026 multiplayer deep dive establish the mode structure, but do not report class-by-class results.
#1 Best Overall

- A DARKER, GRITTIER THREAT — Face reimagined enemies and a terrifying underground invasion that restores the fear, dread, and intensity at the heart of the Gears of War series.
- MULTIPLAYER EVOLVED — Battle in Horde Siege for large‑scale PvE action or prove your skill in refined Versus PvP with greater precision and competitive depth.
- CLASSIC COMBAT, MODERNIZED — Experience signature cover‑based gameplay enhanced with updated movement, traversal, and controls that feel like Gears while playing like something new.
- CO‑OP YOUR WAY — Play online with up to four players across Campaign, Horde Siege, and Versus, or team up locally with 2‑player split‑screen co‑op on console.
Use the following ordering as a starting point for discussion, not as a universal power ranking. It is editorial judgment based on the roles’ potential fit for a squad; adjust it for the mission and the players you have.
| Editorial tier | Class | When to consider it |
|---|---|---|
| Flexible pick | Assault | Consider it when you want a broadly useful role and your team has not yet identified a more specific gap. The official sources name the class but do not establish its damage, survivability, or objective performance. |
| Target-focused pick | Marksman | Consider it when the mission or team needs a role oriented toward dealing with particular targets. The official material does not quantify its effectiveness against enemies or bosses. |
| Team-support pick | Medic | Consider it when your squad values a support-oriented role. The official material does not specify healing amounts, revive mechanics, or comparative survival impact. |
| Close-engagement pick | Breacher | Consider it when the squad wants a breaching-oriented role or is deliberately building around that approach. The Coalition’s acceptance of four Breachers is a reminder that the class is not restricted to a single slot. |
The evidence does not support declaring one of these classes objectively stronger than the others. Treat the labels in the table as ways to discuss team needs, not as claims about undocumented abilities or a measured order of strength.

Choose for the mission, then check the squad
- Read the mission’s demands. Consider its objectives, optional rewards, and major threats. Official materials confirm those elements exist, but do not provide a class matchup chart.
- Look for a gap in the four-player squad. Talk through whether the group wants a more flexible, target-focused, support-oriented, or breaching-oriented role.
- Pick the class you can contribute with. The Coalition explicitly encourages experimentation; a familiar or enjoyable choice may serve your group better than copying an unverified ranking.
- Reassess after a mission. If an objective or threat proved difficult, change roles or composition and see whether the adjustment helps your group.
Is there a best Horde Siege class composition?
No fixed composition is established as best. Three squads of four share a larger PvE space, so a choice can make sense for one group’s assigned mission without becoming a requirement for every other squad. The Coalition’s guidance is unusually direct: classes are designed to complement one another, but any lineup is allowed, including four players choosing Breacher. Build around the mission and team preferences rather than forcing one of every class.
- Choose variety if your group wants to try different roles and see which combinations suit its missions.
- Choose a focused lineup if your group has a clear plan or simply prefers one role; the official guidance does not rule this out.
- Change the lineup when the team’s experience gives you a reason to do so. There is no cited official class formula to preserve.
Versus: why a Horde Siege tier list does not apply
Versus is a separate 4v4 PvP format. The Coalition says players begin with the same loadout weapons and equipment, and that weapon mods are not used in Versus. Its official multiplayer overview does not establish a class-based Versus tier list. The Coalition’s multiplayer overview therefore supports evaluating Versus through its own rules, not carrying over a Horde Siege ranking.

- Listen up, soldier. The world is in ruin. The Locust Horde has risen. It’s Human vs Horde, and here’s your mission: Pick a side, build a powerful deck, and win the war. The fate of the world is in your hands!
- Experience the gritty gunplay of the video game in this official two-player card game. Take command of the COG forces or the Locust horde and seize control of the battlefield, one chapter at a time.
- Strategise your way through each chapter, bolstering your forces with classic characters like Marcus Fenix, General Raam, August “Cole Train” Cole, Dominic Santiago, and Damon Baird.
- Every battle counts. Whatever happens in each chapter will change what comes next, so you’d better be ready to dominate. The deck you build and decisions you make will change the way you play each campaign, making this a game you can reload time and time again.
- Whether you're a hardened vet or a grass-green rookie, get ready to take cover and lay down suppressive fire. Your enemies are trying to take the line, soldier. You’d better shove back hard.
For Versus, focus on the match’s map and objective, how your team coordinates, and individual execution under the equal-starting-loadout rules. The official materials reviewed do not establish class tiers for this mode, so naming a “best E-Day class” for Versus would go beyond the available evidence.
How current is this ranking?
This is a provisional framework, not a definitive live balance ranking. In its September 30, 2026 update, The Coalition said Season 1: Emergence runs for eight weeks through December 1, Versus Ranked launches October 13, and player telemetry and feedback will guide tuning. The same update lists weapon changes since the August beta. Read The Coalition’s September 30, 2026 update before treating any class advice as current after balance changes; the cited update does not provide class win rates or establish a new class order.

What the official numbers do—and do not—show
The published figures offer mode context, not evidence that one class outperforms another. The Coalition also describes five planned post-launch multiplayer seasons and more than 80 unique medal series at launch, but neither figure establishes a class tier. The Coalition’s multiplayer overview is the source for those progression figures and the 4v4 Versus format; Xbox Wire’s June 2026 overview describes Horde Siege’s 12 players in three squads of four.
| Published figure | What it describes | What it cannot establish |
|---|---|---|
| 12 players; three squads of four | Horde Siege’s PvE structure, described by Xbox Wire in 2026 | Which class wins, is picked most, or contributes most |
| 4v4 | Versus matches, described by The Coalition in 2026 | A Horde Siege class ranking or a Versus class tier list |
| Five planned seasons | Post-launch multiplayer support, described by The Coalition in 2026 | How classes compare in performance |
| More than 80 unique medal series at launch | Launch progression content, described by The Coalition in 2026 | Class strength, popularity, or balance |
