The confirmed details point to a first-contact horror story, a rebuilt combat foundation, several ways to play, and an origin story that reaches into the series’ weapons and squad history. Here are seven details worth knowing before release.
1. The Locust are meant to feel like a terrifying first encounter
E-Day takes place 14 years before the original Gears of War, when Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago encounter the Locust for the first time. That changes the point of view: these are not familiar enemies in another chapter of a long war, but an unknown threat erupting onto Sera.

In a 2024 interview, The Coalition creative director Matt Searcy described E-Day as “the heart of the Gears universe,” the moment that shapes what follows. Art director Aryan Hanbeck said players would see the monsters through the eyes of people encountering them for the first time. The campaign supports solo play, two-player split-screen on console, and online co-op for up to four players. Split-screen is specifically a console option; the listing does not say that PC supports it. Online campaign co-op requires a Game Pass subscription tier that includes online multiplayer, sold separately.

3. Multiplayer is split between cooperative survival and competitive matches
The confirmed multiplayer offering has two distinct lanes. Horde Siege is a larger-scale cooperative wave-survival mode; Versus is competitive PvP, with new maps and refined 4v4 modes. They are not just different playlists for the same kind of match: one is built around surviving waves together, the other around opposing teams.
The Coalition’s multiplayer overview also clarifies a small but useful customization detail: character poses are stances for the lobby or match screen, not emotes that can be triggered during gameplay.

4. The combat foundation is being rebuilt, not simply carried forward
The Coalition says every animation, asset and feature was crafted from the ground up, while the gameplay sandbox is unified across modes. Xbox describes the familiar cover-based combat as paired with modernized movement and traversal. Those statements support expecting a deliberate mechanical refresh, rather than a straightforward reuse of earlier games’ assets and systems.
They are developer descriptions, not independent performance or quality measurements. Xbox lists Unreal Engine 5 and a 4K, up-to-60-frames-per-second target across campaign and multiplayer, subject to a compatible display. That is a published target—not a guarantee of measured performance on every device. Xbox’s listing gives the platform and display qualifications.
5. The chainsaw Lancer has an origin story of its own
The early MK 1 Lancer shown in the 2024 reveal has a detachable bayonet instead of the familiar chainsaw. That fits the setting: the chainsaw-equipped Lancer does not yet exist at this point in the timeline.

Brand director Nicole Fawcette described E-Day as a story of many origins, including the Chainsaw Lancer, and joked that it would not be a Gears game without chainsawing Locust. The interview establishes that the weapon’s history matters to the story, but does not disclose exactly how the chainsaw version comes about. The Coalition’s interview explains the distinction.
6. The campaign preview introduces more than Marcus and Dom
In Xbox Wire’s campaign preview, the demo begins at the opening of Act 2, during the early hours after the Locust emerge. Kalona’s City Hall has been converted into a COG base, where Bravo Squad assembles. Alongside Marcus and Dom, the group includes Lucas Reyes and Mags Carter.
That gives a glimpse of the people and setting around the central duo, not a full synopsis of the campaign. The preview’s scene is described in Xbox Wire’s campaign preview.

As of October 3, 2026, Xbox lists Gears of War: E-Day for Xbox Series X|S and Windows PC, with an October 6, 2026 release date. The listing references Microsoft Store and Steam, and says the game is included with Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass. Store availability and subscription terms can vary by region and change, so check the current listing for your location.
Early access and editions
Xbox Wire’s October 1 post describes Premium Edition early access. The standard product listing gives October 6 as the release date; check the edition’s current regional terms for the early-access window and included content rather than treating early access as the standard launch date. Customization and earning items
The Coalition’s multiplayer deep dive describes more than 60 character skins planned for launch. Weapon skin sets apply across customizable weapons. The developer also says nearly all customization items can be earned by playing, and that there is no battle pass or tour of duty. These are stated plans and describe the approach announced for launch; they are not a guarantee about every future paid item or update. The multiplayer overview outlines the customization plan.
A companion book, not a game guide
Xbox Wire points to The Art and Making of Gears of War: E-Day, an official Insight Editions companion book featuring developer interviews on art, story, sound and design. It is an art-and-making book, not a walkthrough or strategy guide. Xbox Wire’s October 1 post identifies the companion book.
