Gear Lever is a Linux desktop utility that organizes, integrates, launches and updates AppImages. It can move imported files into a managed folder, create desktop entries and icons, add applications to your system menu, and either replace an older release or keep several versions side by side. It is distributed mainly as the Flatpak app it.mijorus.gearlever.
What Gear Lever does
An AppImage is normally a standalone executable file, but downloading one does not automatically place it in your desktop menu or give you a consistent update workflow. Gear Lever supplies that management layer.

- Import: drag an AppImage into Gear Lever or open it through the application.

~/AppImagesas the default and says the location can be changed in Preferences. - Integrate: generate desktop entries, application metadata and icons so the AppImage appears in the desktop application menu.
- Launch: open an installed AppImage directly from Gear Lever or from the generated menu entry.
- Update: fetch available updates and choose whether to replace the current file or retain multiple versions.
- Clone: LinuxLinks reports that the utility can clone AppImages, which is useful when you need another managed copy.
The project describes this as integrating AppImages into the app menu “with just one click.” Flathub describes Gear Lever as a free utility that generates desktop entries and metadata and supports both in-place updates and side-by-side versions.
Install Gear Lever
Install from Flathub
The primary distribution channel is Flatpak. Install the Flathub application whose ID is it.mijorus.gearlever, then launch it from your desktop menu. From a terminal, the documented launch command is:

Import an AppImage and add it to the app menu
- Open Gear Lever.
- Drag an AppImage into its window, or use the application’s import/open control.
- Choose the managed storage location if you do not want the default
~/AppImages. - Let Gear Lever create the desktop entry, metadata and icon.
- Launch the program from Gear Lever or search for its new entry in the desktop application menu.
The import process keeps the executable in Gear Lever’s managed folder rather than leaving an untracked download in a temporary directory. You can still open an AppImage directly when needed; integration is the step that makes it behave more like a conventionally installed desktop application.

Updating and keeping older versions
Gear Lever’s update workflow is designed for AppImages that publish an update source. It can check for updates, download a newer file and then use one of two management strategies:

The available update source and the publisher’s AppImage metadata determine whether an update can be found. Gear Lever is a manager; it does not guarantee that every independently downloaded AppImage exposes a usable update feed.

Command-line controls
Starting with version 3.0.0, the project documents CLI operations for integration, updates, removal and inventory. The commands are exposed through the Flatpak invocation:

The list commands support --json output, making them suitable for scripts and inventory checks. The project also notes automatic naming for command-line AppImages, so imported tools that do not present a conventional graphical identity can still receive a usable name.

Use the Flatpak executable as the command prefix. For example, the general pattern is:

flatpak run it.mijorus.gearlever --list-updates --jsonConsult the installed release’s help output for the exact positional arguments and option combinations, because CLI details can change between releases.
Flatpak permissions and direct launching
The Gear Lever README says the Flatpak permission org.freedesktop.Flatpak is required to open managed apps and refresh the system menu. If that permission is disabled, the project says Gear Lever should continue working except for direct application opening. In practice, a missing permission can therefore leave library management available while preventing the convenience of launching an AppImage from Gear Lever itself.
Portable mode: an important qualification
Portable mode places an AppImage’s application data beside the AppImage, which can make a self-contained folder easier to move or back up. A LinuxLinks review dated January 12, 2024 reported that Gear Lever did not support portable mode for newer AppImages. That is a dated secondary-source limitation, not a newly verified statement about every 2026 build; check the current project documentation if portable data storage is a requirement.
Current release and download figure
A Flathub listing captured for 2026 identifies Gear Lever version 4.6.2 and notes a fix for an error with the configuration parser. The same listing showed 58,001 downloads per month. That number is a volatile catalog figure for the captured period, not a long-term adoption or performance measurement.
