Feedr is a local, Rust-based terminal application for collecting and reading RSS and Atom feeds on Linux. It combines feed discovery, OPML import, categories, search, filters, read and star tracking, article previews, optional full-text extraction, and browser opening without requiring a hosted account or paid plan.

What Feedr is—and what it is not

Feedr runs in your terminal and stores its working data locally. It is not a hosted synchronization service, web dashboard, or streaming-content app. The project describes it as “A feature-rich terminal-based RSS/Atom feed reader written in Rust.” The documented interface includes keyboard navigation, mouse support, themes, compact layouts, configurable keybindings, a help overlay, and an interactive configuration editor. Those features support a polished terminal workflow, although the available project material does not establish comparative usability or performance claims.

Installation options on Linux

Rust and Cargo are prerequisites for the documented installation methods. Choose the route that best matches how you maintain software on your system.

Method Documented approach Best fit
Cargo cargo install feedr Users who already manage Rust tools with Cargo
Arch User Repository Install one of the Feedr packages provided through the AUR Arch-based systems using an AUR helper or manual PKGBUILD workflow
Build from source git clone the project, then run cargo build --release Users who want a locally built release binary
Home Manager A Home Manager manual entry exists; verify the current option names and compatibility before enabling it Nix users managing software declaratively

Package names, release versions, and integration details can change, so check the project’s current documentation before installing.

First launch and adding your first feed

  1. Start Feedr from a terminal.
  2. Press a to add a feed.
  3. Enter a feed URL. You can also paste a webpage URL when you want Feedr to attempt feed auto-discovery.
  4. Move through the interface with the arrow keys or j/k, and press Enter to open a selection.
  5. Press o to open the selected article in your default browser.

For a larger existing collection, use OPML import rather than adding subscriptions individually.

Dashboard and tree browsing

The dashboard aggregates recent articles across feeds. Categories and tree browsing provide a hierarchy for larger collections, while filters narrow the visible set.

Read and starred states

Read/unread status and starred items persist between sessions. These states are stored locally with your Feedr data, so they remain available after you close and reopen the application.

Reading articles inside the terminal

Preview, links, and browser hand-off

The article view can show an inline preview, expose links, and send the original page to your browser. This lets you triage headlines in the terminal while retaining a conventional browser for sites that need their full interface.

Optional full-text extraction

Press Shift+F to request full-text extraction for an article. Feedr uses a Mozilla Readability port for this operation. You can also enable extraction for an individual feed during refresh.

  • Extracted content is held in memory and is not persisted; after restarting Feedr, you must extract it again.
  • Short pages, JavaScript-dependent pages, and otherwise inaccessible sites may fall back to the summary supplied by the feed.
  • Extraction is therefore a convenience, not a guarantee that every webpage will be reproduced in full.

Refresh behavior and customization

Background refresh is configurable, and the project documents per-domain request throttling to moderate requests to individual sites. Other documented controls include:

  • Dark and light themes.
  • Compact layout settings.
  • TOML configuration.
  • Command-line configuration management.
  • An interactive TUI configuration editor.
  • Remappable keybindings and mouse support.

Use the built-in help overlay to check the active keymap rather than relying on defaults after customization.

Where Feedr stores configuration and data

On Linux and macOS, the documented paths are:

Purpose Path
Configuration ~/.config/feedr/config.toml
User data, including bookmarks, categories, read state, and starred items ~/.local/share/feedr/feedr_data.json

The project says older data locations are migrated automatically. Because article extraction is memory-only, the data file does not serve as a permanent archive of extracted webpage text.

Dependencies, licensing, and practical boundaries

Feedr is MIT licensed. Its documented Rust stack includes ratatui and crossterm for the terminal UI, reqwest for HTTP, feed-rs for RSS/Atom parsing, and dom_smoothie as a Mozilla Readability port, among other dependencies.

  • Feedr needs a Linux environment with Rust/Cargo available for the documented Cargo and source workflows.
  • Feeds must be reachable over the network when you refresh them.
  • Some publishers expose only summaries or require browser-side JavaScript, limiting what the terminal preview can show.
  • The documented workflow is local; no hosted account or paid Feedr plan is required.

Who should use Feedr?

A strong fit

  • Linux users who spend much of their day in a terminal.
  • Readers who want local files, keyboard navigation, and persistent read/star organization.
  • People migrating an existing feed collection through OPML.
  • Users who prefer to triage feeds quickly, then open selected stories in a browser.

Consider another type of reader if you need

  • Cloud synchronization across several devices.
  • A graphical, browser-first interface with no terminal dependency.
  • Guaranteed full-text copies stored for offline reading.

Those requirements are outside what the project’s documented local workflow promises.

Bottom line

Feedr is a capable local Linux RSS/Atom reader for terminal-oriented workflows. Its combination of discovery, OPML import, organization, search, persistent read/star state, configurable refresh, and optional Readability extraction makes it more than a minimal headline viewer. The important limits are equally clear: extracted article bodies are temporary, some pages fall back to feed summaries, and the project does not document hosted synchronization.
