For most Windows 11 users, no: avoid running an unofficial script just to block GDID. Microsoft documents GlobalDeviceId as an internal identifier in a Windows reporting schema, but the sources available do not show a built-in consumer switch for disabling it. Turning off optional diagnostic data is a separate privacy setting; it does not turn off GDID.
What GDID is—and what Microsoft documents
Microsoft’s Windows Update for Business documentation lists a GlobalDeviceId field in the UCDOStatus reporting schema, which covers per-device Delivery Optimization reporting for Windows 10 and Windows 11. Microsoft describes the field as a “Microsoft global device identifier” and says: “This identifier is used by Microsoft internally.” Microsoft Learn’s UCDOStatus schema does not, by itself, explain every possible use of GDID in consumer Windows services or establish its full creation and retention lifecycle.

“Tracker” is a characterization used in coverage and in the search query. The documented field establishes that Microsoft uses an internal device identifier; it does not establish that GDID tracks every activity on a PC, makes a user anonymous, or has a particular scope beyond what the schema describes.
What are your options in Windows 11?
| Option | What it affects | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Windows diagnostic-data controls | Optional diagnostic data, according to Windows Latest’s July 10, 2026 reporting; this does not disable GDID. | Lower-impact built-in privacy choice. Review the description shown for each setting because available controls and labels can change. |
| Third-party GDID-blocking script | A system modification intended to block GDID. Tom’s Hardware reported Microsoft app and account-verification connection errors in its Windows 11 test. | More intrusive, with potential account-service disruption. The reported test does not establish that every PC or Windows build will behave the same way. |
Windows Latest reported that Windows 11 has no native GDID-specific consumer toggle. Its July 10, 2026 article distinguishes optional diagnostic-data settings from GDID itself: changing those settings is not a way to disable the identifier. Read the report on GDID and Windows 11 settings.

Why the unofficial script is a risky trade-off
Tom’s Hardware described Windscribe’s deGDID as an experimental PowerShell script run with administrator privileges. In the publication’s Windows 11 test, using it was followed by connection errors involving Microsoft apps and account verification. That is a reported test result, not a guarantee of the same effect on every system. The article also says the script cannot delete identifiers Microsoft has already stored on its servers. Read Tom’s Hardware’s report on the script and its test.
Because the script modifies system behavior and may affect account-dependent services, do not use it casually. The available evidence does not establish that blocking GDID makes a PC anonymous, prevents all account-level association, or removes Microsoft-held records.

If your goal is to reduce optional diagnostics
Use Windows 11’s built-in diagnostic-data controls instead of treating a GDID blocker as a general privacy switch. Open Settings and review the privacy or diagnostic-data controls available on your installed build; read each setting’s own description before changing it. Menu labels and available controls can change over time. This limits the optional data covered by those settings, not GDID itself.
