Gateway Decision Models: What’s Changing and What to Check

AI gateways are adding typed decision APIs and classifier-driven route graphs—but the two patterns differ in where decisions happen, what they return, and how teams must handle cost, privacy, and failures.

AI gateways are beginning to offer two distinct ways to make model-routing decisions: a typed decision API that returns values for application code, and a classifier inside a gateway-managed route graph. Neither pattern is universal, and they solve different problems. The practical question is whether a decision belongs in your application or should be evaluated as part of gateway routing.

What a gateway decision model does

A decision model takes supplied information—such as a support ticket, log entry, or structured record—and returns a value an application can act on: a category, score, yes-or-no result, or extracted field. Unlike a general-purpose generation call, its output is intended to be a defined decision rather than prose.

For example, an application could ask which team should receive a ticket, whether a case is urgent, or whether a record needs human review. The application can then apply its own policy to that output. Some systems also return confidence or probability information, which can help identify uncertain cases; confidence is useful only if it is meaningful and calibrated for the workload.

That is different from asking a gateway to use a classifier as one step in choosing which model handles a request. The first pattern returns a result to application logic. The second evaluates a route and sends the request onward—or rejects it—according to gateway configuration.

Two designs, with different control points

Design What it returns or controls Where the next policy decision happens
Typed decision endpoint A structured choice, score, yes/no value, order, tag, or extracted field, depending on the service and schema. Application code consumes the typed result and decides what to do.
Gateway-managed route graph A selected route branch leading to a model target or rejection node. The gateway evaluates configured conditions, classifier results, and traffic splits.

These are complementary patterns, not interchangeable labels. A gateway might support one, both, or neither. A dedicated endpoint can suit applications that need decisions in several parts of a workflow. A route graph can suit teams that want routing rules managed in a named gateway configuration rather than scattered across application code.

What current gateway implementations document

Typed decisions through an API

Merge Gateway documents a POST /v1/decisions endpoint for typed answers about supplied state. Its documentation says these models are not candidates for routing policy, do not stream, accept no sampling parameters, use Merge-managed keys only, and are unavailable to organizations using zero-data-retention settings. It also says input and output use route rates, with output priced at $0 for typesafe/jev-1.13 in the documented example. These are product-specific terms and may change.

RouterPlus documents a decision API and a catalog of ten decision models, as listed when its documentation was accessed on October 7, 2026. The catalog spans TypeSafe, Inception, Bespoke Labs, Cloudflare, RouterPlus, Perplexity, Levanto, and Fastino. Nine models share System One’s question format; GLiNER uses its own schema. RouterPlus also says the models are not interchangeable for failover: its gateway does not fail over between different decision models. Catalog size therefore does not establish model equivalence or portability.

Classifier-driven route graphs

LLM Gateway’s dynamic routes define a graph with an entry node and branches based on request conditions, classifier results, or percentage splits. Conditions can use headers, body fields, or gateway metadata. Classifier branches currently use TypeSafe Jev for difficulty, task, or output type; model nodes can target catalog models or eligible custom models.

A client calls a named route by putting dynamic/<name> in the model field. Published route versions are immutable snapshots that can be rolled back, and request metadata records the route version and path. Percentage branches are session-stable when a session identifier is present. Those controls can make staged rollout and request-level investigation easier, provided the team uses the logs and versioning deliberately.

The documented feature is limited to chat completions and proxying responses, messages, and AI SDK endpoints. It does not cover embeddings, images, audio, video, reranking, OCR, or moderation. LLM Gateway identifies dynamic routes as an Enterprise-plan feature, so it should not be assumed available on every plan or for every request type.

What changes when the gateway makes the routing decision

Latency and failure handling

A classifier node adds a decision step before the downstream model call. LLM Gateway says classifier errors and compliance blocks follow the route’s else branch. That makes the fallback branch an operational policy, not a harmless default: choose a safe destination or rejection behavior for timeouts, missing credentials, malformed output, and policy blocks, then test each case.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fail-open and fail-closed behavior should be considered against the consequence of a wrong route. Sending a request to a less specialized model may be acceptable for a low-risk task; bypassing a compliance check or silently rejecting important work may not be. The appropriate behavior depends on the application and should be explicit in the graph or surrounding code.

Cost and accounting

Count both the decision call and the downstream model call. LLM Gateway says its Jev classifier call is billed separately and appears as its own log entry. Its September 20, 2026 launch post listed TypeSafe Jev 1.13.0 at $0.042 per million input tokens, with output free, for that service’s described route; this is not a general market price. Its dynamic-route documentation, accessed October 7, 2026, gives an approximate catalog-rate example of about $0.0001 per classifier call. That approximate figure is volatile, and the documentation says only routes containing a classifier node incur the call; a sticky session reuses the verdict. Check the live terms rather than projecting either figure to other providers.

Privacy, keys, and compliance

Before using a decision feature, determine which provider receives the input, which credentials are used, and whether the data policy permits that transfer. A typed endpoint may have different key and retention requirements from an in-graph classifier. Merge’s documented decision models, for example, require Merge-managed keys and are unavailable to zero-data-retention organizations. Do not infer that a gateway’s general privacy or key-handling terms apply identically to every feature.

Versioning and traceability

Routing logic can change outcomes even when the downstream model stays the same. If the gateway supports immutable published versions, rollback, branch-level logs, and controlled traffic splits, those features can help explain which decision path a request took and contain a problematic change. Confirm what is actually recorded and retained, and whether your team can associate a result with its route version and session.

How to decide whether routing belongs in the gateway

  • Keep the decision in application code when it is part of broader business policy, must coordinate multiple systems, or needs logic the gateway cannot represent. A typed endpoint can still supply a classification while the application retains the final policy decision.
  • Consider a gateway route graph when the decision is specifically which model or route should handle a request and operators need shared, versioned routing controls.
  • Check endpoint fit first. Verify the required protocol, request type, model targets, plan availability, and whether the decision is exposed to code or only used during route evaluation.
  • Inspect the fallback path. Define behavior for classifier failure, timeout, missing credentials, malformed results, compliance blocks, and unavailable targets.
  • Validate quality on your workload. Compare outputs against labeled examples, and assess confidence thresholds if uncertain cases should go to a person. Vendor model lists do not establish which model performs best for your data.
  • Measure the whole request. Include classifier latency, decision-call cost, downstream cost, and any repeat or session-sticky behavior in evaluation.
  • Review data handling and observability. Confirm key ownership, retention constraints, logs, route-version visibility, rollback, and the information available for investigating individual requests.

The reviewed vendor documentation describes product capabilities, not an independent, matched benchmark of decision quality or a finding that gateway-managed routing outperforms application-owned logic. Treat model selection as an evaluation on your own cases, with latency, cost, integration surface, privacy, failure behavior, and traceability considered alongside accuracy.

Published limits and dated figures

LLM Gateway’s September 20, 2026 changelog entry for System One: Typed Decisions states a limit of 600 requests per minute per organization for its System One endpoint. The same entry gives the Jev price noted above. These figures describe that service’s published terms on that date, not a universal gateway limit or price.

All cited catalogs, plan limits, prices, and retention policies can change. Confirm the current provider documentation and account terms before designing around a specific capability or number.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
