A Garry’s Mod server that does not appear in the Internet tab is usually being advertised as LAN-only, missing a valid Game Server Login Token, unreachable on its game port, or sitting behind carrier-grade NAT (CGNAT). Check those causes in that order. Then verify outbound Steam access and allow time for an empty server to be indexed; there is no documented fixed delay.

Start with the four checks most likely to solve it

If all four are correct, investigate CGNAT, local firewall rules, multiple-server port collisions and listing delay.
1. Turn off LAN mode and hidden-server settings
Set sv_lan to zero
- Stop the dedicated server.
- Open
garrysmod/cfg/server.cfgin the server installation. - Add or change the line to
sv_lan 0. - Save the file and start the server again.
Do not leave a second configuration file or a launch parameter overriding it. A command-line argument such as +sv_lan 1 can set LAN mode after the configuration file is read. Check the complete startup shortcut, shell script, service definition or container command and remove that argument.

When the server console starts, look for errors or messages indicating that it is running in LAN mode. The exact wording varies by build, so the setting in the effective configuration is more reliable than a remembered console message. Test from a different Internet connection, not just another computer on the same home network.
Remove the explicit hide flag
Search the launch command for +hide_server 1 and delete it. This is independent of sv_lan: a server can be Internet-enabled and still be deliberately hidden. Restart after removing the flag. If a control panel regenerates the command line, change the setting in that panel as well as in any local script.

2. Add a valid Game Server Login Token
Garry’s Mod dedicated servers use a Game Server Login Token (GSLT) associated with App ID 4000. Create a token in Steam’s Game Server Account management page, use one token for each server instance, and pass it on the launch line with +sv_setsteamaccount.
A typical launch fragment is:
+sv_setsteamaccount YOUR_TOKENDo not publish the token in a screenshot, forum post or public repository. Treat it like a credential. If you operate several instances, keep a separate token record for each one so that replacing or revoking one does not create confusion about the others.
Symptoms of a token problem
- The server exits during startup after token validation.
- The console reports an invalid, expired or otherwise unusable account token.
- The process stays online locally but never registers reliably with the Internet list.
- Players can connect by a direct address while the browser entry is absent or inconsistent.
Stop the server, replace the token in the actual launch command, and start it again. Check for stray quotation marks, truncated characters and whitespace copied into the argument. If the token was revoked or has expired, generate a new one rather than repeatedly restarting with the old value.
Token behavior and ranking are described inconsistently in community and hosting documentation, so do not treat a token as a guarantee of instant listing. It is a prerequisite to check, not a substitute for correct ports and public reachability.

3. Open and forward the game port
Use a stable private address
Give the server computer a DHCP reservation or static address on the home network. A forwarding rule aimed at an address that changes after a reboot will silently stop working.
- In the router, reserve the server computer’s current private IPv4 address.
- Create a port-forward rule for the server’s listening port, normally 27015.
- Choose UDP for gameplay and server queries.
- Because published setup guides disagree about whether TCP is also needed for all server-list operations, opening both UDP and TCP on 27015 is the cautious compatibility choice. TCP is specifically associated with RCON in one set of guidance; opening it does not make RCON safe by itself.
- Apply the rule and allow the same traffic through the operating-system firewall.
Forward the external port to the same internal port unless your launch configuration deliberately uses a different value. Never assume that forwarding a port on the router also creates a firewall exception on Windows or Linux.
Do not add undocumented ports blindly
Some third-party instructions mention additional query or client ports, but the available guidance does not establish a universal extra-port requirement for every Garry’s Mod installation. Start with the port shown by your server configuration and launch command. Add another port only when a specific enabled feature or a documented configuration requires it.
Confirm that the process is listening
Run a local check while the server is running. On Linux, an example is:

Get-NetTCPConnection -LocalPort 27015 -State ListenThese commands show local bindings; they do not prove that the router forwards traffic or that an outside player can reach it. If nothing is bound to the expected port, fix the server’s port setting or startup command before changing the router.

Test from another network
Use a computer or phone on a different Internet connection and attempt a direct connection to the public address and port. An external UDP scan can provide another signal, but UDP scanners often label an open service as “open|filtered,” so a negative-looking result is not conclusive. A real connection attempt from outside the home network is the more useful test.
Do not test with the server’s private address from inside the same LAN and conclude that Internet forwarding works. Some routers lack NAT loopback, while others make an internal test appear successful even when the public path is blocked.
4. Rule out carrier-grade NAT
Port forwarding cannot expose a server when the Internet provider places the household behind carrier-grade NAT (CGNAT). In that arrangement, the router receives a shared or private WAN address and the provider controls the public address; unsolicited inbound traffic never reaches your router.
How to identify likely CGNAT
- Read the WAN or Internet address shown in the router’s status page.
- From a device on that connection, check the public address shown by a reputable “what is my IP” service.
- Compare the two values. If the router’s WAN address differs from the public address, or is clearly a private/shared address, another NAT layer may exist upstream.
- Ask the ISP whether inbound IPv4 port forwarding is available on your plan.
A mismatch is an indication, not absolute proof: some providers use other forms of address translation. The ISP can confirm whether you have a directly reachable public address.
What to do if CGNAT is confirmed
Request a public IPv4 address if the provider offers one, or move the dedicated server to a host or virtual server with a public address. A VPN or tunnel can also change the network design, but it introduces its own latency, port and maintenance requirements; it is not a simple router-forwarding fix.
5. Check outbound access to Steam’s master server
Listing is not only an inbound-port problem. The server must be able to contact Steam’s backend, and a local firewall, security suite or restrictive network can block that outbound traffic.

Use the Steam Server Browser on the same computer that runs the dedicated server. If that browser is also blank or cannot retrieve any Internet servers, suspect a local firewall, DNS or general Steam connectivity problem rather than a Garry’s Mod-specific setting. Temporarily review outbound-blocking rules, then create a narrowly scoped exception for the dedicated-server process and Steam components instead of disabling the firewall permanently.
If the browser works normally but your server is absent, outbound access is less likely to be the primary cause; return to the token, LAN and port checks. A successful Steam login in the desktop client does not by itself prove that the dedicated-server process is permitted to communicate.
6. Allow for listing delay without guessing a deadline
Empty or very low-population servers may take longer to appear in the Internet list. Community and hosting guidance notes this behavior but does not establish a fixed delay. Do not use an arbitrary “wait exactly X minutes” rule as proof that registration failed.
After correcting a setting, leave the server running while you perform the independent checks above. Refresh the browser, search by the exact server name and try a direct connection. If it remains absent after the server has been continuously online and externally reachable, continue troubleshooting rather than assuming the list is merely slow.

7. Troubleshoot several dedicated servers on one connection
Operators sometimes report that one of several dedicated servers appears while the others do not. Treat this as an instance-level configuration problem first, not evidence of a general Steam outage.

Give every instance an unambiguous port
Two processes cannot reliably share the same IP-and-port binding. Assign each instance its own game port in its launch configuration and create a matching router and firewall rule. Keep a written map of instance name, private address, external port and token.

The table deliberately uses your configured values rather than assuming that every instance should use the default port. The important requirement is that the launch command, local listener, router rule and firewall rule agree for each server.

- Confirm both processes are running under the intended game directory.
- Compare
sv_lan, hide flags and map/startup arguments. - Check that each process is listening on its assigned port.
- Verify that each token is present and not accidentally copied from another instance.
- Test each public port from outside the LAN.
One visible server does not prove that the other server’s port, token or configuration is correct.

Use this order to avoid changing several variables at once:
- Stop and record the current command. Copy the exact launch line or service definition so you can see hidden flags and port values.
- Fix visibility settings. Set
sv_lan 0and remove+hide_server 1and any overriding LAN argument. - Validate identity. Create or replace the App ID 4000 GSLT, pass it with
+sv_setsteamaccount, and protect the token. - Restart and read the console. Resolve token, bind or startup errors before testing the browser.
- Verify the local listener. Use the operating-system command for the configured port.
- Align network rules. Reserve the private address, forward UDP 27015 (and TCP 27015 for cautious compatibility), and allow the process through the host firewall.
- Test externally. Use a different Internet connection and a direct connection attempt; do not rely only on a LAN test.
- Check the WAN path. Compare the router’s WAN address with the public address and ask the ISP about CGNAT if they differ.
- Check outbound filtering. If the Steam Server Browser is blank on the server computer, inspect firewall and DNS restrictions.
- Wait and refresh. Keep the corrected server online while checking again; no authoritative fixed listing time is documented.
What the symptom usually means

Common mistakes that waste time
- Changing only the router. A port rule cannot fix
sv_lan 1, a hidden-server flag or a process that is not listening. - Testing only from inside the home. NAT loopback and private-address tests do not establish public reachability.
- Reusing one token without tracking instances. Keep one GSLT per server and know which launch line uses it.
- Opening random ports from forum posts. Start with the configured game port and add others only for a feature that explicitly requires them.
- Disabling every security control permanently. Use temporary, narrow exceptions while testing, then restore normal protection.
- Assuming a missing listing proves a 2026 Steam change. No confirmed 2026 master-server change is established here; verify local configuration and network reachability first.
- Waiting without measuring. Listing delay has no documented fixed duration, so pair waiting with listener and external-connectivity tests.
When to choose another hosting arrangement
If the ISP confirms CGNAT and will not provide a public address, a home router cannot accept the required inbound connection. Hosting the server on a virtual or dedicated machine with a public IP is the straightforward category-level remedy. Before moving, preserve the server configuration, verify the new host’s firewall and port policy, and issue a token appropriate to the relocated instance.
Moving hosts will not correct sv_lan 1, an invalid token or a hidden launch flag, so perform the configuration checks first. A public address solves only the reachability portion of the problem.
Final verification checklist
sv_lan 0is effective after startup.- No

- Outbound Steam access works from the server machine.
- The server has remained online long enough to account for an unspecified listing delay.
Once every item passes, a missing browser entry is no longer explained by the common local settings or basic network path. Capture the server console output, exact launch command, port mapping and ISP response before seeking platform-specific support; those details distinguish registration problems from an unreachable host.
