The clearest difference is the screen: Garmin lists an AMOLED display with optional always-on mode for the vívoactive 5, while the vívoactive 4 has a transflective memory-in-pixel (MIP) display. Both watches share several headline features, including onboard music storage, sleep score and insights, Pulse Ox, Garmin Pay and a 5 ATM water rating. Choose the 5 if its screen and documented battery modes suit you; whether it is worth upgrading depends on your priorities and the prices available to you.
How do the displays differ?
The vívoactive 5 uses an AMOLED screen and supports an optional always-on display mode. Garmin’s comparison lists touchscreen support for the 5. The vívoactive 4 uses a sunlight-visible transflective memory-in-pixel (MIP) display. These are different display technologies; the available specifications do not establish that one is objectively easier to read in every lighting condition.

Garmin’s vívoactive 5 manual explains that audio can be downloaded to the watch and played through Bluetooth headphones. Pulse Ox and other wellness measurements are estimates, not medical diagnoses.

How long does the vívoactive 5 battery last?
Garmin’s 2025 vívoactive 5 manual gives these maximum estimates by operating mode:
| Mode | Garmin estimate |
|---|---|
| Smartwatch mode | Up to 11 days |
| Battery-saver smartwatch mode | Up to 21 days |
| GPS-only | Up to 21 hours |
| All Systems GPS | Up to 17 hours |
| All Systems GPS with music | Up to 8 hours |
| Smartwatch mode with always-on display enabled | Up to 5 days |
These are manufacturer estimates, not results from a controlled head-to-head test. Garmin says actual vívoactive 5 battery life depends on enabled features such as activity tracking, wrist-based heart rate, phone notifications, GPS and connected sensors. The available comparison does not establish a vívoactive 4 battery estimate clearly enough to support an exact endurance comparison.

What does the 5 ATM rating mean?
Garmin describes the vívoactive 5’s 5 ATM rating as pressure equivalent to a depth of 50 m. That is a water-resistance rating, not a recommendation to use the watch at that depth. Garmin’s comparison lists the same 5 ATM rating for the vívoactive 4.
Should you choose the vívoactive 5 or upgrade?
Choose the vívoactive 5 if its screen matters to you
The 5 is the clear option if you want an AMOLED display, optional always-on mode and touchscreen support. Its manual also provides battery estimates across several modes, including smartwatch use with always-on display and GPS with music.

Keep or consider the vívoactive 4 if its display suits you
The 4 may remain a sensible choice if you prefer its transflective MIP display and the shared features meet your needs. The listed feature overlap means the generational choice is not simply a choice between having and not having music storage, sleep score and insights, Pulse Ox, Garmin Pay or a 5 ATM rating.
Base value on the actual price and your priorities
No current prices or verified stock are established here, so there is no reliable basis to call either watch the better deal. Compare the prices you can actually find, then weigh the 5’s display and specified battery modes against the features you already use. The available specifications do not support a broad upgrade recommendation or an exact battery-life advantage over the 4.
