Gaming desktops often draw more power than gaming laptops, but there is no single wattage that represents every system. In a California Energy Commission project report published in 2021, average gameplay power for the tested systems ranged from 34 to 410 watts for desktops and 21 to 212 watts for laptops. Those are results from the report’s sample, not universal estimates for current computers. Your own draw depends on the hardware, game, settings, frame-rate target, and whether you count the display and other equipment.
How much power do gaming desktops and laptops use?
The California Energy Commission’s 2021 project report found average gameplay power ranging from 34 to 410 W among the desktops it tested and 21 to 212 W among the tested laptops. The European gaming energy-efficiency project also reported broad variation in its sample: a 12-fold spread for desktops and a 10-fold spread for laptops. Its publication date is not established in the surfaced report result.

These measurements show why a single “gaming PC wattage” is misleading. They describe specific tested systems and games, not every machine now on sale. The CEC figures are gameplay averages; do not treat them as maximum power-supply ratings or as predictions for idle, sleep, or everyday use. Game, settings, and frame-rate target
Different games and graphics settings place different demands on a computer. Even the same game can produce a poor comparison if one system is tested at a higher frame rate, resolution, or graphics quality. For a useful comparison, match the game, settings, frame-rate target, and test duration.

Computer alone or the full setup
A laptop’s built-in screen is part of the laptop, while a desktop typically needs a separate monitor. An external display or docking station adds load to a laptop setup too. Decide whether you are comparing computers alone or everything used to play, and count displays and peripherals consistently. The U.S. Department of Energy notes that external displays and docks can increase notebook energy use; Intel’s buying guidance also distinguishes the laptop’s integrated display from desktop configurations. Operating mode
Gameplay, idle, sleep, and off are different operating modes. A gaming-session measurement should not be used as though it were an all-day average. ENERGY STAR’s computer criteria address multiple operating modes and power management, but its general estimate that certified computers use about 30–40% less energy than standard models is not a gaming-specific comparison between desktops and laptops. The program’s computer information lists an October 2025 effective date. ENERGY STAR computers.

How to measure your own gaming PC’s power draw
A plug-in electricity usage monitor can measure the wall draw of the computer or setup connected through it. It helps answer what your system uses under your conditions; it does not provide a universal benchmark or make a short test a reliable annual-cost forecast.

- Connect the computer’s power cord to a plug-in electricity usage monitor, then connect the monitor to the wall outlet. To measure the whole setup, include the relevant display and accessories where the meter and outlet arrangement allow.
- Run the same game, graphics settings, and frame-rate target on each machine. Keep the test duration and other conditions as consistent as possible.
- Record average watts and the length of the session. If you want to understand non-gaming use too, measure idle, sleep, or off separately.
- Make the display setup explicit: use the laptop’s built-in screen or include its external display, and count the desktop monitor if you are comparing whole setups.

How to estimate electricity use and cost
Use the measured average draw for the session and your own electricity rate. The formulas are:
- Energy (kWh) = average watts × hours ÷ 1,000
- Estimated cost = kWh × your electricity price per kWh
For example, if a system averages 200 W during a two-hour session, it uses 0.4 kWh for that session: 200 × 2 ÷ 1,000. Multiply 0.4 by the per-kWh rate on your electricity bill to estimate the energy charge. This is an estimate for that session and rate; total bills may include other charges.
