A gaming PC can be upgraded and used for work, creative projects, or other tasks, but its price and setup involve more than choosing a tower. The drawbacks below matter differently depending on your budget, the gear you already own, your preferred games, and how much setup you want to handle.
1. The upfront cost can be high
A capable gaming PC can require a substantial initial outlay, particularly if you are starting without any equipment. TechRadar’s October 1, 2026 buying guide estimates a minimum of US$800, £700, or AU$1,200 for a competent 1080p gaming PC. It estimates around US$1,500, £1,500, or AU$2,300 for a mid-range 1440p system, and places some high-end systems at roughly US$3,500, £3,500, or AU$5,000 and up.

These are guide estimates, not quotes for particular configurations or guaranteed prices. The amount you need depends on the games and resolution you are aiming for, the components in the system, and local availability. Treat the figures as a snapshot rather than a promise that a particular budget will buy the same performance everywhere.

A desktop’s advertised price may cover the computer but not the items you need to use it. A monitor, keyboard, and mouse are often separate purchases; a console package may include a controller. Desk space also matters, especially if the computer and screen need a dedicated place.

You do not necessarily need to buy a complete setup. If you already own compatible peripherals, they can reduce what you spend. Before comparing a PC price with a console price, list the equipment you have and add only the items you still need. That total is more useful than comparing the tower alone with a console package.
3. Component prices and availability can change
Parts may become harder to find or more expensive, complicating both custom builds and prebuilt-PC shopping. TechRadar reported that component shortages and tariffs had affected PC parts and consoles, and that some individual components for custom builds could be harder to source.

One company-specific example illustrates why a listed price may not stay fixed: on August 7, 2026, NZXT said supplier GPU costs had risen by as much as 36%. NZXT also said prices for affected gaming PCs and subscriptions increased by approximately 5–11%. Those figures describe NZXT’s suppliers and affected products, not the whole market.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsConsole prices can change too, so a past console price is not necessarily a dependable comparison. Xbox Wire announced increases effective August 1, 2026 of US$100 for 512 GB Xbox models and US$150 for 1 TB models. This is context about console pricing, not a like-for-like comparison with any specific PC.

4. Getting started can involve more steps than with a console
HP’s 2026 comparison describes PC setup as potentially involving Windows configuration, driver updates, installing game launchers, and adjusting display settings. It characterizes console setup as plug-and-play. In practice, the amount of work varies with the particular system, your experience, and how much you want to customize.
That extra flexibility can be useful if you want control over settings or components, but it can also mean making more decisions before you play. Consider whether you are comfortable configuring a computer and troubleshooting occasional setup issues, or whether a simpler start is more important to you.

5. A console may suit your priorities better
A gaming PC is not automatically the best fit for everyone. HP’s 2026 comparison points to lower entry cost, simpler setup, living-room convenience, and platform-exclusive games as reasons some buyers may prefer a console. It also notes that a PC can offer selected component upgrades and serve productivity or creative needs beyond gaming.
Choose based on the games you want and what else you need the device to do. If a particular exclusive game or a straightforward living-room setup is central to your decision, those priorities may outweigh a PC’s flexibility. If you also need a general-purpose computer or value the option to upgrade selected components, those uses may make the PC’s cost and setup more worthwhile.
Quick Recap
How to decide whether the tradeoffs fit you
- Set a total budget: Include the computer and any screen or peripherals you lack, rather than using the tower price alone.
- Check your space: Decide where the computer, display, and desk setup will go.
- Make a games list: Confirm that the games you care about are available on your preferred platform, including any exclusives that affect your choice.
- Choose your setup comfort level: Weigh the PC configuration steps against the simplicity you want.
- Count other uses: Consider whether work, streaming, or creative tasks would give a PC value beyond gaming.
- Allow for changing prices: Recheck current local prices and availability when you are ready to buy; published estimates and company-specific price changes are not universal quotes.
