ExpressVPN is a polished, feature-rich paid VPN with broad device support and a substantial published audit program, but its speed is not uniform across protocols and platforms, and its privacy safeguards do not make you untraceable. TechRadar recorded very high Lightway Turbo speeds on Windows in its 2026 tests; RTINGS’ later assessment was more critical of its collected speeds and latency. The service is worth considering if you value ease of use, supported-device coverage and audited products, but check the current checkout price and renewal terms before subscribing.
How good is ExpressVPN?
ExpressVPN combines VPN apps for supported devices with vendor-described protections including a kill switch, leak protection, private DNS, AES-256 encryption and its Lightway protocol. ExpressVPN says its TrustedServer system runs on RAM and that data is removed when a server reboots. These describe the company’s product and design claims; they are not, by themselves, independent proof that every protection works in every situation.

Its main strengths are a broad set of supported platforms, a straightforward service proposition and independent audits covering multiple products and privacy commitments. The trade-offs are a price that reviewers have described as relatively high against some rivals, performance that varies by protocol and system, and separate questions about business practices and corporate ownership. ExpressVPN does not support port forwarding, according to RTINGS, which may rule it out for users who specifically need that capability.
ExpressVPN pros and cons
- Pros: Vendor-reported availability in 113 countries; up to 14 simultaneous supported-device connections; published audits covering several products and privacy commitments; and high Windows Lightway Turbo results in TechRadar’s test.
- Cons: Exact subscription pricing and renewal amounts need to be checked at checkout; performance depends on platform, protocol and route; Lightway Turbo was Windows-only in TechRadar’s test and had compatibility and connection-time limitations; and RTINGS raised concerns about marketing and analytics data collection and corporate ownership.
- Not a fit for everyone: It does not block cookies or prevent browser fingerprinting, and it lacks port forwarding.
How fast is ExpressVPN?
There is no single speed figure that predicts what you will get. Results depend on your baseline connection, location, server route, protocol, operating system and test method. In TechRadar’s 2026 test context, Lightway Turbo was markedly faster than regular Lightway in both reported routes, while WireGuard also produced different results. Those are that outlet’s measurements, not guaranteed speeds for subscribers.

TechRadar’s results show why the headline Turbo numbers should not be generalized to every ExpressVPN app or connection. RTINGS’ review, marked updated July 13, 2026, describes its collected speed results as slow and latency as mediocre. That is a contrasting assessment based on RTINGS’ testing and methodology, not a universal measurement of every user’s connection.
Can ExpressVPN be traced?
A VPN can hide your public IP address from sites and services you connect to, but it does not make you anonymous. ExpressVPN’s own FAQ states: “On its own, a VPN prevents you from being tracked by your IP address, but you’ll need to take extra steps to avoid being traced by other means.” Cookies, account logins, browser fingerprinting and information you share can still identify or track you.

What the audits establish—and what they do not
ExpressVPN says it has commissioned independent audits since 2018. Its stated audit coverage includes Lightway, TrustedServer, desktop and mobile apps, browser extensions, Aircove, privacy and no-logs commitments, and build verification. The company’s Trust Center lists, among other work, a June 2025 KPMG audit of privacy commitments and a March 2026 Cure53 security and architecture review of ExpressKeys. ExpressVPN also says it and Kape Group secured ISO/IEC 27001, ISO 9001 and ISO 18295-1/-2 certifications in 2025, and describes biannual transparency reporting.

Technical tests of a kill switch or IP/DNS protection answer a different question from whether a company’s data practices or governance meet a reader’s expectations. RTINGS reports finding a functional kill switch and strong technical IP/DNS protection in its assessment.

What plans does ExpressVPN offer, and what does it cost?
ExpressVPN’s official review page lists three standard subscription durations. It does not establish numerical current prices in the reviewed material, so a reliable cost comparison requires checking the price displayed for your region at checkout.

Promotions and renewal amounts can change, so do not treat an advertised introductory rate as a recurring price. TechRadar describes the newer pricing structure as more affordable while still relatively expensive compared with highly rated competitors; it also judges the premium Pro plan to offer limited value over Basic and Advanced. That is the reviewer’s value assessment, not a substitute for comparing the current prices and included features at checkout. TechRadar’s 2026 coverage also notes ExpressKeys in some subscription tiers; verify the current tier details before buying.

Can I use ExpressVPN on multiple devices?
ExpressVPN says one subscription allows up to 14 simultaneous connections on supported devices. You can install the service on more devices than that, but only the stated number can be connected at the same time. The 14-device figure is the vendor’s current reported limit, not an independent test result.

For devices that cannot run a VPN app, a compatible VPN router can cover traffic through the home network instead. Router-level coverage is a different setup from adding another app connection; check the router’s supported devices and configuration, and remember that a VPN router still requires an ExpressVPN subscription.

What is the best VPN router for ExpressVPN?
ExpressVPN’s current named home-router offer is Fortify (GL-MT6000), made with GL.iNet and based on its router platform. ExpressVPN announced a $199.99 MSRP and availability through GL.iNet beginning September 16, 2026, with Amazon availability to follow shortly after launch. That announcement does not establish current Amazon stock or price, so confirm a live listing before purchasing.
Aircove and Aircove Go have been retired from sale, and ExpressVPN says it will not produce additional units. Existing routers are not instantly unusable: the company says Aircove AX1800 will receive software security updates through the end of 2027, while Aircove Go AXG1800 support runs through the end of 2028. The company says those devices can continue functioning after those dates, but firmware updates will stop after the stated support horizons.
Who should choose ExpressVPN?
ExpressVPN is most compelling for someone who wants a familiar VPN service with broad device support, a high reported simultaneous-connection allowance and public audit documentation, and who is comfortable confirming the actual subscription cost at checkout. Its case is less convincing for someone choosing chiefly on the basis of maximum speed across all platforms, seeking port forwarding, or expecting a VPN alone to prevent tracking. Compare the specific app and protocol available on your device, the renewal price, and the audit scope that matters to you before deciding.
