Gaming Notification Reconstruction: Node.js Health API Rate-Limit Polling Backoff

How to poll a health endpoint without worsening rate limits, and how to keep attempt records that separate endpoint health from actual notification delivery.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When a health API returns 429 Too Many Requests, your poller should wait for the delay the server gives, which is usually the Retry-After header. If the server gives no usable delay, fall back to capped exponential backoff with jitter. Stop when you hit a fixed attempt or time budget. Record every attempt as its own event. That record is what lets you reconstruct an incident later, for example when a reward, invitation or receipt notification seems to have gone missing.

Keep two questions apart. “Did the service endpoint answer?” is a health question. “Did this notification reach this player?” is a delivery question. A 200 from a health endpoint is a point-in-time signal about the endpoint. It does not show that a notification cohort was delivered, so store delivery and retry evidence separately.

What the sources establish, and what they don’t

The scenario here is a gaming notification workflow. It does not name the upstream gaming platform, so its actual rate limit, headers, webhook support and delivery guarantees are unknown. Everything below is a pattern to check against your provider’s contract. Any numbers in the code are placeholders you should tune, not benchmarks.

Two public references show how real platforms handle this. GitHub’s REST API documentation (“Best practices for using the REST API”) says: “You should subscribe to webhook events instead of polling the API for data.” MDN’s page on 429 Too Many Requests says: “A Retry-After header may be included to this response to indicate how long a client should wait before making the request again.” Discord’s API documentation also describes a JSON retry_after field in its rate-limit responses. These are examples of platform guidance. They do not bind other APIs. Node.js’s HTTP documentation covers the runtime’s HTTP facilities and timeout behavior, but it prescribes no polling policy.

  • Supported Carriers and Frequency Bands: The Android phone only supports T-Mobile and Verizon carriers in the United States. For other carriers, you need to check the frequency bands. Our smartphone supports the following frequency bands: GSM: B2/3/5/8; WCDMA: Band1/2/4/5/6/8/19; LTE FDD: B1/2/3/4/5/7/8/12/13/17/18/19/20/25/26/28A/28B/66/71; LTE TDD: 34/38/39/40/41; 5G NR: N1/2/3/5/7/8/12/20/25/28/38/40/41/66/77/78/79.

Decide first: should you poll at all?

If the upstream service offers event subscriptions or webhooks, evaluate them before tuning a poller. GitHub recommends webhooks where possible. Google Health documents subscriptions in which the receiver acknowledges immediately and processes asynchronously. Neither of these shows that your gaming API supports the same, so confirm that in its documentation. If it does not, polling is the fallback, and the rest of this article applies.

The retry decision, step by step

1. Classify the response

  • 2xx: the attempt is finished. Record it and wait for the next scheduled window.
  • 429: retry, using the server’s delay if it is valid.
  • Transport errors, timeouts and 5xx: retry according to the upstream contract, with the same budget.
  • Other 4xx: do not retry blindly. A bad credential or malformed request will fail the same way every time. Record it as a permanent failure and alert.

2. Honor server-directed delay

Read Retry-After first, or whatever equivalent the API documents. Retry-After can be a number of seconds or an HTTP date, so handle both. If the body carries a field such as Discord’s retry_after, use that where the API documents it. Treat negative, missing or unparseable values as “no usable guidance”. Also cap an absurdly large server delay against your own deadline. If the wait would pass the deadline, stop and record that outcome instead of sleeping.

3. Fall back to bounded exponential backoff with jitter

With no usable timing, double the delay on each attempt up to a ceiling, then randomize it. Jitter matters because many workers that back off on the same schedule will all return at the same moment and trigger the limit again. Spread the regular polling schedule too, for example with a per-instance offset.

4. Cap attempts and elapsed time

Use both an attempt cap and a wall-clock deadline. Choose them from the notification deadline and the upstream rate-limit contract. A finite attempt count is only an illustration, and no universal value is right.

Illustrative Node.js poller

This sketch assumes Node.js 18 or later, where fetch is built in. It is an example of the structure, not a tested drop-in module. The constants are placeholders.

const MAX_ATTEMPTS = 5; // placeholder: derive from contract and deadline
const DEADLINE_MS = 60_000; // placeholder: total retry budget per window
const BASE_MS = 500;
const CAP_MS = 20_000;
const MAX_BODY_CHARS = 2_000;    // bound what you store

const sleep = (ms) => new Promise((r) => setTimeout(r, ms));

function parseRetryAfter(header, body) {
  if (header) {
    const secs = Number(header);
    if (Number.isFinite(secs) && secs >= 0) return secs * 1000;
    const date = Date.parse(header);
    if (!Number.isNaN(date)) return Math.max(0, date - Date.now());
  }
  // Only if your API documents a body field, e.g. Discord's retry_after (seconds)
  if (body && Number.isFinite(body.retry_after) && body.retry_after >= 0) {
    return body.retry_after * 1000;
  }
  return null;
}

function backoffMs(attempt) {
  const ceiling = Math.min(CAP_MS, BASE_MS * 2 ** attempt);
  return Math.random() * ceiling; // full jitter
}

async function pollWindow(windowKey, url, record) {
  const started = Date.now();
  for (let attempt = 1; attempt <= MAX_ATTEMPTS; attempt++) {
    let status = null, text = '', delay = null;
    try {
      const res = await fetch(url, { signal: AbortSignal.timeout(5_000) });
      status = res.status;
      text = (await res.text()).slice(0, MAX_BODY_CHARS);
      if (res.ok) {
        await record({ windowKey, attempt, status, delay: 0, body: text });
        return { ok: true };
      }
      if (status !== 429 && status < 500 && status !== 408) {
        await record({ windowKey, attempt, status, delay: null, body: text });
        return { ok: false, permanent: true };
      }
      let json = null;
      try { json = JSON.parse(text); } catch {}
      delay = parseRetryAfter(res.headers.get('retry-after'), json);
    } catch (err) {
      text = String(err.name || 'error');
    }
    if (delay === null) delay = backoffMs(attempt);
    const outOfTime = Date.now() - started + delay > DEADLINE_MS;
    await record({ windowKey, attempt, status, delay, body: text, gaveUp: outOfTime || attempt === MAX_ATTEMPTS });
    if (outOfTime) break;
    await sleep(delay);
  }
  return { ok: false, exhausted: true };
}

Note that the 4xx check excludes 429 and 408 from the permanent-failure branch. Adjust that list to what your upstream actually documents.

Keeping the evidence for reconstruction

Give every polling window a deterministic identity

Build a stable key from the target and the time bucket, for example health:{service}:{ISO minute}. Persist it before the first request. Append one record per attempt rather than overwriting a single “last status” field. Each record should hold the attempt number, HTTP status or error class, the selected delay and where it came from (server header, body field or computed backoff), and a bounded response excerpt.

Prevent overlapping workers

The scheduler should not start a new attempt for a window while an earlier worker still owns it. Use a lease or lock keyed on the window key, with an expiry so a crashed worker cannot block the window forever. Without this, a slow retry loop and the next scheduled tick will combine into the burst you were trying to avoid.

Make alert writes idempotent

Write incident transitions (opened, still failing, recovered) under a unique key derived from the window key and the transition. A repeated read or a re-run job then cannot produce contradictory duplicate outcomes. This protects your own records only. It does not make the remote read exactly-once, so the upstream may still see repeated requests.

Store details in logs, not metric labels

Put window IDs and response fragments in logs or event records. Using them as metric labels creates high-cardinality series that are costly to store and slow to query. Keep metrics to low-cardinality dimensions such as service, status class and outcome. Bound any stored body, and strip secrets and personal data such as tokens or player identifiers before writing.

Keep delivery evidence in its own record

For each notification batch, store send and retry evidence in a separate store: batch ID, provider message or receipt IDs where the provider issues them, and the times and results of each send attempt. During an incident review you can then line up “the health endpoint was green and then rate-limited from 14:02 to 14:07” against “this cohort’s sends were retried and acknowledged at these times”. Never infer the second from the first.

Design checklist

  • Server-directed delay is honored, in both header and documented body forms.
  • Fallback backoff uses jitter and a ceiling.
  • Both an attempt cap and a wall-clock deadline exist, derived from the real contract.
  • Permanent 4xx errors are not retried.
  • A lease prevents overlapping work on one window.
  • Alert and incident-transition writes are idempotent.
  • Attempt records are append-only and bounded, with secrets removed.
  • Webhook or subscription support has been checked and ruled out before polling is chosen.
  • Limits, headers, authentication rules and delivery guarantees are verified against the actual gaming service.
