Push Square reported on October 6, 2026, that GameStop planned to price pre-owned PS5 Pro consoles in the United States at up to $1,399.99 for a digital-only unit and $1,499.99 for one with a disc drive attached. The report cites a Reddit post and a leaked message; it is not a public GameStop announcement, and the reported October 16 start date is still in the future as of October 7.
What prices were reported?
Push Square says new price guidance set these ceilings for pre-owned US consoles:

What does “digital-only” versus “with a disc drive” mean?
Sony describes the PS5 Pro as a 2 TB all-digital console. Its optional Disc Drive is sold separately and must be paired with the console over an internet connection during setup. So the two reported prices refer to different configurations: one without the accessory and one with it attached. Sony’s product page does not establish that the reported GameStop price includes a separately sold drive as a new accessory or specify the drive’s condition. Sony’s US PlayStation Direct PS5 Pro page

Is a pre-owned console really reported to cost more than a new one?
Yes, that is the comparison Push Square makes: it describes the new PS5 Pro as costing about $900 in the US, substantially below the reported $1,399.99 and $1,499.99 pre-owned ceilings. Treat the $900 figure as Push Square’s approximate comparison, not a current Sony price verified by the official product information retrieved here. The official page confirms the product configuration but does not show a current price in the inspected result. Push Square’s October 6 report Sony’s US PlayStation Direct product page

The reported message calls the higher pre-owned price “intentional,” but the evidence does not establish GameStop’s reasoning beyond that wording. Speculation about demand, supply, or other causes should not be mistaken for a confirmed explanation.

Before treating the reported figures as a buyable offer, a shopper would need to check the live GameStop listing and its details. The available reporting does not verify whether the price change took effect, what inventory is available, how condition is graded, whether a drive is included, or what warranty and return terms apply.
Quick Recap
- Confirm the current price and whether the listing is for the digital-only console or a unit with a drive attached.
- Check whether the drive is included in the sale and whether it is itself pre-owned.
- Review the condition grade, warranty coverage, and return policy on the live listing.
