Artemis III is still planned for 2027, but the date is not guaranteed. NASA’s current plan makes it a crewed test in low Earth orbit—not a Moon landing—where Orion is to rendezvous and dock with one or both commercial lunar lander systems. Artemis IV, currently targeted for 2028, is the first planned lunar landing in NASA’s sequence.
What is Artemis III supposed to do?
NASA’s current Artemis overview describes Artemis III as a low Earth orbit demonstration. The crew will travel aboard Orion, launched by the Space Launch System (SLS), and evaluate one or both commercial human landing systems through rendezvous and docking. The mission is intended to test systems and operations needed for a later lunar landing.

The mission architecture changed in March 2026. NASA’s architecture announcement described Artemis III as an orbital test ahead of an Artemis IV landing targeted for 2028, with precise objectives to be developed further with industry partners. NASA’s current overview retains that distinction: Artemis III is the demonstration; Artemis IV is the first planned lunar landing.
Why does the 2027 date remain uncertain?
In an interview published October 5, 2026, Artemis III mission specialist Andre Douglas told Reuters that a 2027 launch remained possible, while cautioning that “anything can happen.” He pointed to major lander development milestones still ahead: storing and transferring super-cooled propellants in space, and demonstrating docking in orbit.
#1 Best Overall
- HOBBY MODEL KIT – Unassembled model packed in an envelope with easy to follow instructions. Ideal for ages 14 and up.
- NO GLUE OR SOLDER NEEDED – Parts can be easily clipped from the metal sheets. Tweezers are the recommended tool for bending and twisting the connection tabs.
- PREMIUM SERIES ARTEMIS MOON ROCKET - 3.50 Sheet Model with a Challenging difficulty level. Once assembled, dimensions are 3.30 L x 2.88 W x 7.40 H inches. 115 Pieces. 1:522 Scale.
- FROM STEEL SHEETS TO 3D – Pop out the pieces and connect using tabs and holes. Includes illustrated instructions
- HIGHLY DETAILED ETCHED MODEL – Display your 3D model once completed - collect and build them all.
Those milestones matter because the orbital demonstration depends on the commercial landers being ready for the planned rendezvous and tests. Reuters reported that Douglas works with both lander developers and that NASA planned further readiness meetings with SpaceX and Blue Origin. NASA’s public plan allows for testing one or both systems, so the exact participation and flight sequence should not be treated as settled.
Which astronauts are assigned?
NASA’s June 9, 2026 crew announcement names four prime crew members and one backup:

- Randy Bresnik — commander
- Luca Parmitano — pilot; he is an ESA astronaut
- Andre Douglas — mission specialist
- Frank Rubio — mission specialist
- Bob Hines — backup
NASA said Parmitano is the first ESA astronaut assigned to an Artemis mission.

NASA’s June crew announcement outlined a sequence involving pathfinder versions of both landers. It is an envisioned plan, not a guarantee that both demonstrations—or this exact order—will take place:

- Blue Origin’s Blue Moon pathfinder would launch first and wait in orbit.
- Orion and its crew would rendezvous and dock with it, then conduct roughly two days of tests, including entering the lander.
- Orion would wait for SpaceX’s Starship pathfinder, then spend about a day on checkouts and tests after docking.
- The crew would return to Earth aboard Orion.
NASA estimates a crewed mission of about two weeks. Its actual duration will depend on launch timing, rendezvous, and docked operations.

| Mission | NASA’s current target | Planned role |
|---|---|---|
| Artemis III | 2027 | Crewed low Earth orbit demonstration of rendezvous and docking with one or both commercial lander systems |
| Artemis IV | 2028 | First planned Artemis lunar landing in the current sequence |
These are NASA’s target years, not confirmed launch dates. For readers asking whether Artemis III will land on the Moon, the current answer is no: its planned work is in Earth orbit. The lander testing is intended to prepare for the later landing mission.
