If you want the closest studio-made follow-up, start with Cyberpunk 2077: it shares CD Projekt Red’s story-led open-world approach, but swaps dark fantasy for science fiction. For a different kind of sequel to your time in the Northern Kingdoms, choose by what you miss most—character-driven storytelling, demanding exploration, flexible role-playing, monster battles, or freeform fantasy roaming.
Start with Cyberpunk 2077 for another CD Projekt Red world
Cyberpunk 2077 is the most direct bridge from The Witcher 3: both are open-world role-playing games from CD Projekt Red, built around a central protagonist and story-rich settings. Instead of Geralt travelling through a dark-fantasy world, you play V in a dangerous future city. Its quest design and worldbuilding make it a strong choice if you want another authored adventure, but not if your priority is swords, monsters, and fantasy.

| Game | Best fit if you want | Main difference from The Witcher 3 |
|---|---|---|
| Red Dead Redemption 2 | A lived-in world, memorable characters, and an emotional story | It leaves behind fantasy monsters and swordplay. |
| Elden Ring | Exploration and challenging action combat | Combat is demanding, and NPC interaction is less prominent. |
| Baldur’s Gate 3 | Quest flexibility, character interaction, and role-playing choices | It uses party-based, turn-based combat rather than real-time action. |
| Dragon’s Dogma 2 | Fantasy action and large monster fights | It is a combat-focused match, not as close a narrative fit. |
| The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim | Open-ended fantasy exploration | You create your protagonist, and its quest structure differs. |
| Monster Hunter: World | Focused monster hunts, progression, and cooperative play | It is a narrower hunting experience, not a comparable open-world narrative RPG. |
For a character-led world: Red Dead Redemption 2
Red Dead Redemption 2 suits players who value a richly inhabited setting, interaction with the world, and an emotionally driven story. Its focus is not fantasy adventure: expect neither the same kind of monster-hunting nor Geralt’s melee-combat rhythm. Pick it when atmosphere and characters matter more than swords and sorcery.

For exploration with a combat challenge: Elden Ring
Elden Ring is an action RPG for players who want to explore a large world and test themselves in demanding fights. It is a better fit for combat-first exploration than for dense dialogue or a steady stream of character-led quests; NPC interaction is less prominent than in The Witcher 3. The official page covers the base game and Shadow of the Erdtree expansion, so check which edition or content is available for your platform before buying.
For flexible quests and character choices: Baldur’s Gate 3
Baldur’s Gate 3 rewards players who like engaging with NPCs and finding different ways through quests. The trade-off is a substantial change in play style: it is a party-based role-playing game with turn-based combat, not a real-time action adventure with a single sword-wielding lead. Bandai Namco’s genre explainer distinguishes action RPGs, where combat happens in real time, from turn-based RPGs, where players plan during pauses: read its RPG genre guide.
For fantasy action and monster fights: Dragon’s Dogma 2
Dragon’s Dogma 2 is a good pick if the fights are what you want to carry over. Its large monster encounters, varied loadouts, and ability to climb monsters during combat make battles the draw. Its world is smaller than The Witcher 3’s, though content-rich, and it is better understood as a combat match than a close substitute for the latter’s narrative focus.
For freeform fantasy roaming: The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
Skyrim offers a magical world to roam, with secrets, monsters, and alchemy. It gives you a player-created protagonist rather than a defined character like Geralt, making it a fit for open-ended fantasy exploration rather than the same authored lead and quest structure.
For monster hunting, especially with friends: Monster Hunter: World
Monster Hunter: World concentrates on tracking and fighting monsters, improving your equipment, and playing cooperatively. Choose it if you mainly miss preparing for hunts and taking down creatures. It is a more focused activity-based game, not a broad narrative open world.

These games are available across differing platforms and editions; compatibility and included content are not the same everywhere. Verify that the version you want runs on your system, and check whether a named expansion is sold separately or included in the edition you are considering. CD Projekt Red describes The Witcher 3’s remastered version as upgrading visuals, performance, and gameplay, and identifies Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine as expansions. Upgrade entitlements vary by platform, so confirm the terms for your copy rather than assuming an upgrade or expansion is included: official The Witcher 3 page.
