Can Huawei Kirin Phones Run Android Apps? Compatibility and Workarounds

Many Huawei Kirin phones can run Android apps, but Google services and app features may not work. Here’s how to check compatibility and choose a workaround.

Yes, many Huawei phones with Kirin processors can run Android apps if their software is Android-based—but that does not mean every app will work, or that Google Play and Google Mobile Services (GMS) are installed. App compatibility depends on the exact phone, software version, app availability in your region, and whether the app relies on Google services.

What “run Android apps” means on a Huawei phone

There are two separate questions: can the phone’s operating system run an Android app, and will that app’s features work without Google’s proprietary services? Huawei describes HMS Core as a framework for Android Open Source Project-based systems that supports Android apps. But it warns that some apps require GMS Core and may not run with HMS Core (Huawei support: HMS Core and app compatibility).

The Kirin name alone cannot answer either question. Check the phone’s exact model and system software—such as its EMUI or HarmonyOS release—and the app’s requirements. Huawei support guidance applies to specific software generations, so compatibility assumptions should not be generalized from the chipset.

Do Huawei Kirin phones have Google Play?

Do not assume that a Huawei phone has Google Play or GMS just because it can run Android apps. HMS Core is Huawei’s own service framework; it is not GMS Core and does not automatically provide every Google service an app expects. Huawei describes HMS Core as supporting services and capabilities such as Huawei ID, payments, notifications, AppGallery and developer tools (Huawei Mobile Services).

Huawei’s China support page says the Mate 30 series and later models do not come with GMS or Google apps preinstalled because of Google’s licensing strategy. That statement concerns preinstallation and is specific to Huawei’s cited China support guidance; it should not be treated as a claim that every model or regional variant has identical software. Huawei suggests using web versions of Google apps where available (Huawei China support: Google apps and services).

If Play Store is installed, check the phone’s actual certification rather than infer it from the Kirin processor. Google explains that Play Protect certification is a compatibility and security review and shows how to find certification status in Play Store settings (Google Play Help: Play Protect certification). This does not establish certification for any particular Huawei model.

How to check whether a particular app will work

  1. Identify the phone and software. Find the model name or number and the installed EMUI, HarmonyOS or other system version. Compatibility advice for one generation may not apply to another.
  2. Search AppGallery for the app. Huawei identifies AppGallery as its official app distribution platform. Check that the listing is available in your region and for your device; system-version or device-compatibility limits can prevent an app from appearing or installing (Huawei support: AppGallery availability and installation).
  3. Check the app’s service dependencies. Look for information from the app’s publisher about Google Play services, sign-in, notifications, maps, payments or device-integrity checks. Huawei cautions that apps requiring GMS Core may not run with HMS Core (Huawei support: HMS Core and app compatibility).
  4. Consider the official web version. For Google apps in particular, Huawei suggests trying the web version on devices without GMS (Huawei China support: Google apps and services). A website may not offer all the native app’s features, so check whether it covers what you need.

Which option should you try?

Option Best first check What to keep in mind
AppGallery Search for the app and confirm its listing is available for your region and phone. Availability and installation can depend on the device and system version (Huawei support).
Official web app Use it when the app publisher provides a suitable website, especially for a Google service on a phone without GMS. Do not assume it includes every native-app feature, works offline or supports every notification.
Third-party workaround Check the tool publisher’s current guidance for the exact phone, software version and app. microG and GBox are described as options for selected Huawei models, not universal or Huawei- or Google-guaranteed fixes (third-party microG/GBox guide).

What about microG, GBox and sideloading?

Third-party guides describe microG and GBox for selected Huawei phones and software versions, but their compatibility claims are not a guarantee from Huawei or Google. Before relying on one, check the tool publisher’s current support information and test the specific app’s essential functions. A workaround that launches an app may still leave sign-in, notifications, maps, payments or device-integrity features unavailable.

Sideloading an APK does not itself supply missing GMS dependencies. Huawei’s AppGallery help guidance also identifies incompatible packages and device or system compatibility as possible reasons an app cannot be installed (Huawei support: AppGallery availability and installation). Avoid random APK downloads, which add security risk without resolving those service requirements.

Bottom line for app-by-app compatibility

Start with the exact model and software version, then check AppGallery, the app publisher’s requirements and whether an official web version meets your needs. Treat microG or GBox as conditional experiments for specifically supported devices—not as a promise that every Android app, or every Google-dependent feature, will work.
