Wasteland 3 is a strong choice if you want a post-apocalyptic co-op adventure with exploration, RPG progression and consequential story choices. It is not a Fallout 76-style first-person shared-world shooter: combat is tactical and turn-based, and online co-op is limited to two players.
Why Wasteland 3 fits—and where it differs
Steam describes Wasteland 3 as a party-based role-playing game set in a post-apocalyptic world and lists online co-op. Xbox highlights tactical combat, exploration and a reactive story. That combination makes it a close thematic and story match for players looking for a wasteland journey with a friend.

The major difference is how you play. Fallout 76 is a first-person shooter in a shared world; Wasteland 3 is a squad-based RPG with turn-based tactical battles. Choose it for planning, party development and story decisions, not for the same real-time shooting feel. Steam’s Wasteland 3 listing and the Xbox listing describe its genre and features.
Co-op, party size and crossplay
| Detail | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Party size | Two players online, according to inXile’s co-op FAQ, updated September 19, 2026. |
| Local play | Online co-op only; no local or split-screen co-op, per inXile’s FAQ. |
| Crossplay | Limited to the same platform family: PC with PC, Xbox with Xbox, and PlayStation with PlayStation, per inXile’s FAQ. |
| Different PC storefronts | PC players using different storefronts can connect through Direct Connect, per inXile’s FAQ. |
If your group has three or more players, wants couch co-op, or needs to play across PC and console, Wasteland 3’s co-op setup does not meet that requirement.

- Good fit: You and one friend want a post-apocalyptic RPG, tactical squad combat, exploration and a story that reacts to decisions.
- Probably not a fit: You want first-person gunplay, a large shared-world group, local co-op, or cross-platform-family play.
One reader looking for games like Fallout 76 or Borderlands said that missions, achievements, goals or a storyline help keep a game engaging. That is an individual preference, not a broad player survey, but Wasteland 3’s reactive story and RPG structure make it worth considering if narrative goals are part of what you want from co-op.
