As of PC Gamer’s October 5, 2026 report, Supermassive Games’ job cuts were reported as completed, Ninja Theory staff were reporting layoffs or risk of redundancy during consultation, and The Coalition had announced no studio-wide layoffs. Warhorse co-founder Martin Klima warned that cost pressures could push work to lower-cost regions; he did not announce a Warhorse relocation.
What has happened at each studio?
| Studio | What was announced or reported | Status and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Supermassive Games | In August 2026, the company began a redundancy consultation that could affect up to 75 employees. | PC Gamer’s October 5 roundup cited former employees’ LinkedIn posts indicating the cuts had been carried out. The final number of people who left was not disclosed. |
| Ninja Theory | PC Gamer reported staff posts saying people had been let go or were at risk of losing their jobs, following failed attempts to sell the studio. | UK employees go through a legally required consultation period before redundancies are completed. The report did not establish a final closure or sale outcome. |
| The Coalition | PC Gamer reported staff concerns and individual cuts, including the September layoff of Gears of War: E-Day story director Juan Vaca. | No layoffs at the studio had been announced as of October 5. Reported employee fears about future cuts or reorganization are not an announced Microsoft plan. |
| Warhorse Studios | Co-founder Martin Klima warned that studios seeking to reduce costs could shift operations to cheaper countries. | This was a prediction about a possible industry response, not a confirmed move by Warhorse. |
Supermassive Games: consultation followed by reported cuts
Supermassive said in August that a redundancy consultation was a “necessary step to help ensure the sustainability of the company.” PC Gamer reported that the consultation could affect up to 75 employees. PC Gamer’s August report covered the planned consultation.

By October 5, PC Gamer cited LinkedIn posts from multiple former employees indicating that redundancies had taken place. The report quoted Supermassive IT and facilities director Frank Tindle saying, “More than 70 brilliant people are leaving Supermassive: developers, artists, producers, QA, operations and more,” and, “Any studio would be lucky to have them.” That is an employee’s account of the departures, not a company-confirmed final headcount; the number of employees remaining after the cuts was not disclosed. The October roundup reports the follow-up.

PC Gamer’s October 5 report said Microsoft considered closing or selling Ninja Theory in June, announced a sale during its July restructuring, and then reportedly saw two divestment attempts fall through in September. It said Microsoft subsequently moved toward closure, while multiple staff members posted that they had been let go or were at risk of losing their jobs.

Those posts do not establish that every potential redundancy was complete. In the UK, employees must go through a legally required consultation period before redundancies can take effect. PC Gamer quoted gameplay programmer Katrin Mair expressing sadness that staff might not finish their work: “So much care, talent and effort went into it, and I really wish we’d had the chance to see what it could become.” Her comment reflects one employee’s response, not an official company statement. The studio’s final status could change after the report.
Are there layoffs at The Coalition?
No studio-wide layoffs had been announced at The Coalition as of PC Gamer’s October 5 report. The report did say that Juan Vaca, story director on Gears of War: E-Day, was laid off in September as part of Microsoft’s cuts, and that other people were reportedly cut shortly beforehand. These reported individual job losses are distinct from an announcement of layoffs affecting the studio as a whole.

PC Gamer relayed staff concerns reported by Eurogamer and attributed in part to anonymous sources. Some employees reportedly feared cuts after a game release, possible reorganization under Activision, and uncertainty about performance bonuses. One anonymous employee said, “We honestly expected the layoffs to hit us post-release, but that seems to not matter now.” These are reported fears, not verified plans from Microsoft. The Coalition’s bonus terms and future staffing were not established in the report.
Warhorse’s warning: cost pressure could shift work geographically
In a September 2026 interview with PC Gamer, Warhorse co-founder Martin Klima predicted that efforts to lower development costs could lead studios to move operations to cheaper countries. He named Central and Eastern Europe, China, India, and East Asia more broadly.
