Game-Key Cards vs. Physical Game Cartridges: What’s the Difference?

A standard Switch 2 game card can start the game after insertion. A Game-Key Card requires a download, but the card must still be inserted to play.

On Nintendo Switch 2, a standard game card can be started after you insert it. A Game-Key Card is also physical, but it holds a key rather than the full game: you need to download the game first, and keep the card inserted to play. Check the game’s packaging to see which format a physical release uses.

What’s the difference between the two cards?

What you want to know Standard game card Game-Key Card
What the card contains Nintendo says you can start the game after inserting the card. The card is a key for downloading the full game data; the full game is not stored on it.
Before you can play Insert the card to start the game, according to Nintendo’s guidance. Download the game first. An internet connection is required for the first download and launch.
Internet for later play Nintendo’s cited instructions do not specify every title’s online features. After downloading, Nintendo says the game can be started without an internet connection.
Storage needed No download-storage requirement is stated in the cited guidance. Free space is needed in system memory or on a microSD Express card. Check the packaging for the required amount.
Card needed to play? Use the physical card as required by the title. Yes. The Game-Key Card must remain inserted to start the downloaded game.

Nintendo’s official term is “game card”; many players call these physical cards cartridges. Nintendo uses both standard game cards and Game-Key Cards for Switch 2 releases, so the word “physical” alone does not tell you whether the full game is on the card. The Game-Key Card packaging identifies that format. Nintendo’s Game-Key Card information and Switch 2 game-card support describe the distinction.

What happens when you use a Game-Key Card?

  1. Insert the Game-Key Card in the Switch 2.
  2. Connect the console to the internet and follow the prompts to download the game.
  3. Make sure enough space is available in system memory or on a microSD Express card. Nintendo says the packaging indicates how much free space is required.
  4. After downloading, keep the Game-Key Card inserted when you start the game. Nintendo says an internet connection is needed for the first launch; the downloaded game can be started offline afterward.

A microSD Express card is not automatically necessary: the download can use system memory if there is enough room. Consider extra storage only if the available space is insufficient.

Does a Game-Key Card need an internet connection every time?

No, not according to Nintendo’s stated instructions. The initial download requires internet, and Nintendo says an internet connection is needed when launching the game for the first time. Once it has downloaded, it can be started offline. This describes the Game-Key Card’s download and launch process; it does not establish whether an individual game has separate online features.

Samsung microSD Express Card – 256GB for Nintendo Switch™ 2
  • Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
  • Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.

Can you use a Game-Key Card on another Switch 2?

Nintendo says to insert the card into another Switch 2 and follow the download steps on that console. That guidance explains how to use the card on another console; it does not by itself establish broader rules for resale, lending, or long-term access to future downloads.

Why did Nintendo introduce Game-Key Cards?

Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa gave the company’s stated rationale in the English translation of Nintendo’s 2025 annual-meeting Q&A: “This is one of the new software distribution methods we have introduced to accommodate the larger game data sizes on Nintendo Switch 2 compared to Nintendo Switch.” That is Nintendo’s explanation for the format, not evidence that any particular game requires it. How to tell which format a physical release uses

Check the front of the specific game’s box for the Game-Key Card identification. Don’t assume that every physical Switch 2 release uses the same type of card: standard game cards and Game-Key Cards are distinct formats.
