Game IP vs. One Release: How a Franchise Can Create Value Over Time

A game is one release; its IP may support sequels, adaptations, merchandise, and licensing. Those options can create value over time, but outcomes depend on rights, demand, costs, and execution.

Game intellectual property can be worth more than the receipts from one release when its rights support multiple games, adaptations, merchandise, and licensing deals. That potential is not a guarantee: actual value depends on ownership, contracts, audience demand, execution costs, and whether a franchise can avoid fatigue.

What makes game IP different from a single game?

A game is a particular release. Its intellectual property (IP) is a bundle of rights that may cover elements used in that release and potentially in later projects. The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) identifies several common types:

  • Copyright can protect creative elements such as graphics, music, storylines, characters, dialogue, and software code.
  • Trademarks can protect names associated with a game or brand.
  • Patents can protect technical mechanisms and technologies.
  • Industrial designs can protect visual and ergonomic design elements.

Which rights apply, who owns them, and what uses are permitted depend on the property, applicable law, and the relevant agreements. WIPO’s World Intellectual Property Report 2024 describes these rights in the video-game industry.

How can the rights reach beyond one release?

If a rights holder controls the relevant rights, it may be able to build on a property through sequels, spin-off games, film adaptations, merchandise, or other licensed experiences. WIPO discusses games, film adaptations, spin-offs, and merchandise as ways gaming IP has been used. Hasbro and Bandai Namco also describe licensing and partnerships as ways to extend entertainment brands across products, games, screens, and experiences.

These are distinct commercial paths, not automatic income streams. A license may let a partner invest in and distribute a product or adaptation, while the rights holder provides access to the IP under agreed terms. The contract determines what rights are granted and how the arrangement works; company strategy descriptions do not establish the terms of any particular deal. See Hasbro’s 2025 annual report and Bandai Namco’s Digital Unit | Integrated Report 2025.

Why can multiple uses matter economically?

WIPO describes game production as high-risk and requiring high upfront costs, while the cost of each additional unit after production is low. If a game establishes recognizable characters, a world, or a brand, reusing or licensing those elements can create additional ways to earn from the initial creative investment. That does not make later projects cheap or certain: new releases and adaptations still require investment and can fail to find an audience.

WIPO puts the point carefully: “At the same time, the ability to exploit video game IP in diverse ways mitigates the risk associated with video game development by providing multiple revenue streams for developers.” This is risk mitigation, not risk elimination.

What evidence shows—and what it does not

Examples demonstrate that game-related IP can travel across formats, but they do not establish a universal valuation rule. WIPO reported that 11.6–14.6% of new video games, excluding sequels, were based on prior IP, including material originating in films, novels, and comics. That range describes the share based on prior IP, not the success rate of those games.

WIPO also reported that The Super Mario Bros. Movie grossed more than USD 1 billion worldwide in 2023, describing it as the first film based on gaming IP to pass that threshold. It is evidence of one successful adaptation, not a general estimate of what any game franchise or rights bundle is worth. WIPO further noted that movies based on video-game IP had a record North American cinema box-office year in 2022, and that successful Mario Bros. and Pokémon games had spawned spin-offs and non-game merchandise; the cited discussion gives no specific merchandise revenue figure.

As another illustration of a brand’s reach, Hasbro reported that Magic: The Gathering grew 7% to USD 1.065 billion in 2022. That is reported brand performance, not a standalone valuation of its IP and not a figure directly comparable with the receipts from one game. Hasbro’s 2022 annual report provides the company’s results.

Why familiarity helps, but does not guarantee success

WIPO says games based on existing IP can draw on an established fan base that may be more willing to spend on a new game. Recognition can help a project attract attention, but it cannot guarantee that the game will be well received or commercially successful. WIPO also warns that too many sequels and spin-offs can create franchise fatigue.

When is IP more valuable than one game?

The case is strongest when rights can be used repeatedly across releases or formats, there is an audience for those uses, and the rights holder can make or license products on workable terms. It is weaker when ownership is fragmented, agreements restrict reuse, demand is uncertain, or the costs and risks of further development outweigh the opportunity.

So “more valuable” is best understood as potential, not a fixed comparison. An IP bundle can offer more ways to generate value over time than a single release, but the sources do not provide a universal formula or show that every game’s IP will ultimately be worth more than that game’s revenue. A specific valuation would need to distinguish the rights themselves from forecast revenue and from the terms of any particular contract.
