What should I set up first on a new Galaxy Tab S12 Ultra?
Samsung announced the Galaxy Tab S12 series on September 30, 2026. Availability began October 7 in select markets, and Samsung announced US availability for October 7. The Tab S12 Ultra has a 14.6-inch display and includes an S Pen. Those features make it worth setting up for your own mix of reading, handwriting, entertainment, and work rather than applying a one-size-fits-all preset.

Complete accounts, lock, and recovery
Finish signing in to the Google and Samsung accounts you intend to use. Set a screen lock that is secure but practical for you, then review the tablet’s recovery and device-finding options in its current settings. Recovery options matter if the tablet is lost, inaccessible, or needs to be restored; check which options are available and enabled rather than assuming they were switched on during setup. Check for updates twice
Use the tablet’s Settings search to find the system software update control, install any available update, and restart if prompted. Then check the app store or stores you use for app updates, especially after restoring apps from another device. A second system and app check after restoration can catch updates that became available or were missed during initial setup. Menu paths and labels are not confirmed here for the shipping software, so follow the labels shown on your tablet.

How should I tune the large display?
Samsung specifies a 14.6-inch display for the Ultra. On a screen this large, a comfortable brightness and a sensible arrangement of reading or work apps can matter more day to day than maximizing every display setting.
Choose brightness for the room
Set brightness for the lighting where you use the tablet. If the display feels harsh in a dim room, lower it rather than relying on peak brightness. Samsung’s US announcement cites up to 1,600 nits peak brightness; that is a manufacturer-stated peak figure, not a recommended everyday brightness or a guarantee of what every app or viewing condition will show.
Decide whether adaptive refresh suits you
Samsung describes the US model’s display as supporting adaptive refresh up to 120Hz. Review the refresh-rate control on your device and choose the option that feels right: a smoother display may suit scrolling and pen interaction, while a more conservative setting may better match your battery preferences. No particular battery saving is established for a specific setting here.

Try eye-comfort and night-display controls
Look for the eye-comfort or night-display controls available in your software and try them during your usual evening reading. Adjust their schedule or warmth only if you find the screen more comfortable; these are personal preferences, not mandatory setup changes.
Which battery settings should I review?
Check the available battery protection and power-saving controls, then make a choice based on whether charging convenience or time between charges matters more to you. The names and availability of controls can vary with the installed software, so find them through Settings search instead of relying on a menu path that may not match your device.

Samsung states up to 23 hours of battery life for the Ultra in its US announcement; this is Samsung’s stated figure, not a guaranteed runtime for every user or workload. Samsung also cites about 95 minutes to charge from 0% to 100% with a 45W adapter. Treat that as a manufacturer-stated charging estimate under its stated conditions, not a promise for every charger or charging session.

How do I make the S Pen useful right away?
The S Pen is included with the Tab S12 Ultra. Before building a workflow around it, test the actions you expect to use in the apps you actually rely on; do not assume a particular shortcut or pen feature is enabled by default.

Set up multitasking only if it fits your routine. Samsung positions the Tab S12 series for productivity, but a reading- or video-focused setup does not need a busy home screen or extra windows.
Arrange the home screen and taskbar
Put frequently used apps where they are easy to reach, and remove or move items that compete for space. If your software offers a taskbar, decide whether keeping it visible helps you switch between work apps or takes up screen area you would rather use for reading and video.

Try split screen or multi-window with a real task
Open two apps you genuinely use together—for example, a document and a note-taking app—and see whether the arrangement is comfortable at the size you prefer. Look for split-screen or multi-window controls in the shipped software. Exact gestures and menu names are not established here, so use the on-device guidance rather than assuming a particular method.
Check whether DeX is available and useful
If DeX appears on your model and installed software, try it only if a desktop-style workspace would help your tasks. Confirm availability on the tablet itself; do not treat a feature as present or enabled merely because the product line is productivity-focused. - Ask whether each app needs camera or microphone access for a feature you use.
- Check whether location access matches the app’s purpose and your preference.
- Review which apps can send notifications, then reduce interruptions from apps that do not need to alert you.
- Revisit permissions when you install an app or discover that a feature no longer works as expected.
Changing a permission can disable a feature that depends on it. If something stops working, return to that app’s permission controls and grant only the access needed for the feature.
What should I revisit after the first few days?
Keep first-day changes reversible. After using the tablet for reading, note-taking, or work, revisit display comfort, battery choices, app placement, and permissions based on what you actually reach for. Samsung’s global announcement describes a commitment of up to seven OS upgrades and security updates; that is a support commitment, not a reason to postpone installing updates currently available for your device.
