Reports about a Galaxy S26 Ultra Privacy Display settings leak can be alarming—especially when you see screenshots or Gallery views that appear to show more than you expected on the lock screen or while the display is restricted.
This guide is written to help you verify what’s happening on your device, tighten the privacy boundaries that actually control what’s shown, and rule out the most common “false leak” causes like notifications, lock-screen previews, and Gallery widgets.

What the Galaxy S26 Ultra Privacy Display leak actually means
“Privacy Display” on Samsung phones generally refers to display-level privacy behavior: what’s visible when the screen is locked, when notifications arrive, and when certain content is shown (or blurred) depending on the unlock state.

When people say “settings leak,” they usually mean one of these:
- Settings seem to revert after a reboot or system update.
- What you see on-screen changes depending on app, lock state, or notification type.
- Gallery or preview surfaces show thumbnails, previews, or widgets that look like content exposure even when Privacy Display is enabled.
It’s also possible the “leak” is not a security breach at all—it can be a UI setting you didn’t realize was controlling the same behavior (lock-screen notifications, lock-screen previews, or biometric-related unlock states).

Open Settings → About phone → Software information and note the One UI version and Android version.
- Write down the exact build/release date if it’s shown.
- If you recently updated, record when the update completed.
2) Check whether the behavior is consistent
Test in a controlled way: lock the phone, trigger a notification with content (e.g., a message or email preview), and then open Gallery from the lock screen (if available) versus from the home screen.
Take note of what changes: lock-screen previews, thumbnails, or blurred content. That tells you which settings category to fix.
Check Privacy Display settings (Samsung Settings)
Samsung’s privacy controls can be split across multiple menus. Your goal is to ensure Privacy Display protections aren’t being overridden by related display/lock settings.
1) Locate Privacy Display controls
Go to Settings → Privacy → look for Privacy Display. If you don’t see it, use the search bar at the top of Settings:
- Tap the magnifying glass in Settings and search: Privacy Display
- Alternatively search: privacy, lock screen, notifications, and screen lock
2) Verify the mode and visibility rules
Inside Privacy Display, confirm the setting that controls what’s visible while locked. Common patterns include:

Some settings don’t live under Privacy Display, but they control whether previews appear when the device is locked or when you’re using certain display modes.
1) Lock screen notifications preview
Go to Settings → Notifications → Lock screen and look for options related to previews.
- Set lock screen notifications to hide content or show icons only (wording varies by One UI version).
- Disable message/email previews if you see a toggle for it.
2) Always On Display behavior
If you use Always On Display, previews can appear there even when your lock screen is restricted.
Open Settings → Lock screen → Always On Display and set it to a mode that doesn’t show message snippets or content previews.
3) Edge panels / pop-ups / floating notifications
These can show thumbnails or message snippets without going through Privacy Display as you expect.
- Check Settings → Notifications → Brief notifications (if present) and any pop-up behaviors.
- Check Settings → Display → any overlay-related toggles you recently enabled.
Gallery-related scenarios that can expose content
When the title mentions “leak [Gallery],” the most common issue is that Gallery or camera-related surfaces show thumbnails, recent photos, or widgets on the lock screen or quick previews.
1) Disable lock-screen access to Gallery previews
Depending on One UI features, Gallery access can appear via:

- Lock screen shortcuts
- Widgets showing recent media
- Notifications that include media thumbnails
Check Settings → Lock screen for any shortcuts or widgets and disable those that surface recent media.
2) Notification media previews (most likely)
Even if Privacy Display is set correctly, a messaging app can attach a photo preview thumbnail. That thumbnail can appear on the lock screen or notification shade.
Go to Settings → Notifications and set previews to hidden at the lock screen level (Section: Secure your lock screen and notifications).
3) Gallery widgets and “recently viewed” cards
If you use widgets on the home screen or lock screen, remove or reconfigure them:
- Long-press the widget → remove it, then test whether the privacy issue disappears.
This is especially effective when the “leak” seems to happen only on the home/lock screen surface rather than inside the Gallery app itself.

Some apps can influence notifications, generate rich previews, or display their own content overlays. If your Privacy Display behavior is inconsistent per-app, tighten permissions.
1) Review notification permissions by app
Go to Settings → Apps → select the relevant app (for example, a messaging or email client) → Notifications.
- Disable notifications that include media previews, if your app offers granular controls.
- If available, turn off Show on lock screen for that app.
2) Limit notification categories that create thumbnails
Many apps separate categories like messages vs alerts. Turn off the categories that contain images or “rich content.”
If you can’t find category controls, disabling lock-screen notification for that app is the fastest route.

Secure your lock screen and notifications (the usual culprit)
Most “privacy display leaks” are really lock-screen preview leakage. Fixing notification previews resolves the majority of cases.
1) Set lock screen notifications to hide content
Open Settings → Notifications → Lock screen.
- Select an option that shows no notifications content or icons only.
- Confirm any toggle like Hide content is enabled.
2) Turn off smart lock-screen features that show content after unlocking
If your device is set to show more content immediately after biometric unlock, it may feel like a privacy leak. Look for options under Lock screen related to:
- Biometric unlock behavior
- Show content after unlock
Set it to the most conservative option available.
3) Disable pop-up previews for sensitive apps
For sensitive apps (messaging, email, photo-sharing), disable:
- Pop-up notifications
- Floating notifications (if enabled)
- Lock screen content previews
Update and reset paths when Privacy Display behaves oddly
If you’ve already changed settings correctly and the behavior still appears to “leak,” treat it as a potential software bug or a corrupted config.

2) Update Gallery and messaging apps
Open Galaxy Store and Google Play Store and update apps that commonly show media thumbnails. Outdated versions can handle notifications differently across OS releases.
3) Clear notification cache behavior (safe resets)
Before factory reset, try targeted fixes:
- Restart the phone.
- Re-check lock screen preview toggles after restart.
- For a specific app causing thumbnails, clear its notification settings and re-enable with conservative defaults (turn off lock-screen content first).
4) Last resort: factory reset after exporting essentials
If you still see a consistent “leak” after all settings changes and updates, a factory reset can remove conflicting configurations. Back up photos to Samsung Cloud or Google Photos first.

Troubleshooting checklist when changes don’t stick
If you change Privacy Display settings but they revert or don’t affect the lock screen, run this checklist.
- Confirm you changed the right device state: test with the phone locked, then with it unlocked.
- Remove widgets that show media: long-press Gallery-related widgets and remove them temporarily.
- Turn off lock screen previews globally: then re-enable one app at a time.
- Check per-app lock screen permission: for each app that sends images, disable lock-screen visibility for that app.
- Disable Always On Display media content: set AOD to a mode without message snippets.
- Restart: verify persistence after reboot.
- Update the OS and the problematic apps and re-test.
- Safe mode test (if supported by your build): boot in safe mode and see whether the behavior stops. If it does, a third-party app is likely responsible.
Common mistakes people make during Privacy Display fixes
- Fixing only Privacy Display but leaving lock-screen notifications set to show previews.
- Assuming Gallery itself is the source when the real exposure is notification thumbnails.
- Changing settings while the device is unlocked and then judging the result without locking the phone.
- Not testing after reboot even though the “leak” reports often mention reversion after restart.
- Ignoring per-app settings: one app can override the experience with rich notifications.
FAQ
Does Privacy Display blur or hide everything in Gallery?
No. Privacy Display is typically about what’s visible on restricted surfaces (like lock screen and notification panels), not about content you view inside the Gallery app after unlocking.
Why do I still see image thumbnails on the lock screen?
That’s usually lock-screen notification previews or rich notification thumbnails from a specific app. Set lock-screen notifications to hide content and disable lock-screen visibility for the app that sends media.

My settings revert after an update. What should I do?
Reapply the conservative lock-screen and Privacy Display settings after updating, then restart once. If it keeps reoccurring, check for beta features and consider updating related apps (messaging/email) and using a safe mode test.
Could this be caused by a third-party app?
Yes. Some apps change notification behavior, create overlay previews, or generate rich notifications. Safe mode is the fastest way to confirm whether third-party apps are involved.
Is this a security breach or just a UI behavior issue?
From typical reports, it’s more often a UI/notification configuration problem than a data breach. Still, if behavior persists after updates and factory reset, you should contact Samsung support with your exact build number and reproduction steps.
Bottom Line
A “Galaxy S26 Ultra Privacy Display settings leak [Gallery]” is most commonly caused by lock-screen notification previews and rich media thumbnails—not Gallery exposing photos by itself. Tighten lock-screen previews first, then confirm Privacy Display, Always On Display, and per-app notification controls.
Recommended Free Tools
If the issue persists after updates and reboot tests, use safe mode to isolate third-party apps, and only then consider a factory reset as a last resort. Keep your notes (build number, test steps, and what you can reproduce) so support can verify the behavior quickly.
