When Gmail delivery stalls for a second day, it’s usually not “random.” It’s either a temporary Google service issue, a sync/filters problem on your account, or a deliverability/bounce problem that affects specific senders and destinations.
This guide treats the issue like a checklist: confirm whether other people are affected, verify your Gmail account isn’t blocking or misclassifying mail, and then validate sender authentication (SPF/DKIM/DMARC) if you control the domain.

Gmail can delay delivery for several reasons that persist beyond 24 hours. The most common buckets are: Google-side ingestion/queue delays, message routing/bounce issues for specific recipients, and client-side symptoms where the email exists but isn’t showing due to sync, filters, or search/export problems.

Another frequent cause is deliverability degradation: if a domain’s SPF/DKIM/DMARC alignment changes (or a third-party mail tool misconfigures authentication), Gmail may slow delivery or send to spam for particular recipients.
Pre-Checks Before You Change Anything
Start by gathering evidence. Without it, you’ll keep changing settings you don’t need to change.
- Confirm the timeframe: note the exact date/time the email was sent and when you expected it to arrive.
- Confirm the address: ensure the recipient address is exact (no extra characters, correct dot placement, correct domain).
- Check other inboxes: ask the sender to send the same content to a different mailbox (e.g., another Gmail address) to isolate whether the issue is recipient-specific.
- Don’t rely on one message: delays can affect specific senders or large batches, not all mail.
Check Whether It’s a Google-Side Incident
Before troubleshooting your account, verify whether Gmail/Google services are degraded. If there’s an incident, there’s nothing you can “fix” locally.

- Look for alerts impacting Gmail delivery, routing, or sign-in.
- If you see an active incident, wait and monitor. Many delays clear within hours, but some queue issues take a full business day.
If there’s no incident reported, proceed with your account and client checks.
Fix It in Gmail on the Web (Computer)
On the web, focus on three things: whether mail is arriving, whether filters are moving it, and whether the UI/search is hiding it.
- Go to
mail.google.comand sign in. - In the top search bar, run these searches one by one (replace date range if needed):
newer_than:2din:inbox newer_than:2din:anywhere newer_than:2dfrom:[email protected] newer_than:2dsubject:(keyword) newer_than:2d
- If you find the message in All Mail (or search results) but not in Inbox, your issue is likely a filter, category, or label rule.
- Check filters:
- Click the gear icon (Settings) → See all settings.
- Go to Filters and Blocked Addresses.
- Look for filters matching the sender, subject, or domain. Disable the filter temporarily to test.
- Check categories:
- Open Settings → Inbox and confirm you didn’t accidentally enable/disable categories that hide mail (like Primary/Promotions boundaries).
Finally, refresh the account state: log out, close the browser, reopen, and sign back in. That can clear UI sync glitches that make mail appear “missing” even when it has arrived.

Fix It in the Gmail Mobile Apps (iPhone/iPad + Android)
On mobile, most “second day delay” reports are actually sync problems or notification delays—not true delivery delays.
iPhone and iPad (Gmail app)
- Open the Gmail app.
- Tap Menu (☰) → Settings.
- Select your account.
- Confirm Sync Gmail is enabled.
- Pull down to refresh your inbox.
- Check notification settings inside iOS: Settings → Notifications → Gmail.
If mail is present on the web but not updating on iPhone/iPad, force close the app and retry after a minute. Also check low power mode and background app refresh.
Android (Gmail app)
- Open Gmail.
- Tap Menu (☰) → Settings.
- Select your account.
- Ensure Sync Gmail is enabled.
- In Android settings, go to Apps → Gmail → Battery and set it to Unrestricted (or disable battery optimization for Gmail).
- Verify background data is allowed for Gmail.
Android’s battery optimization can delay sync by hours—enough to feel like delivery “stuck,” especially after the first day passes.
Confirm the Problem Is Not Sender/Recipient Deliverability
If you’re waiting for emails from a specific domain (or emails you send aren’t reaching others), the issue may be authentication or reputation, not Gmail UI.
Deliverability problems can cause Gmail to throttle delivery, route to spam/quarantine, or delay during scanning.

- Check your domain’s SPF record (typically a DNS TXT record like
v=spf1…). - Confirm it includes all legitimate sending systems (mail provider, CRM, outbound tool).
- Make sure you’re not using a “strict fail” that excludes the actual sending IPs or relays.
DKIM
DKIM adds a digital signature to emails so Gmail can validate they weren’t altered in transit.
- Verify DKIM is enabled for outbound mail.
- Confirm selectors (e.g.,
selector1._domainkey) match your DNS records. - If you changed email tools recently, confirm the new DKIM signature is configured correctly.
DMARC
DMARC ties together SPF and DKIM alignment, and instructs receivers how to handle failures.
- Check your DMARC DNS TXT record (commonly
_dmarc.example.com). - Confirm your policy isn’t overly strict (e.g., moving to
p=rejectwithout confidence). - Review aggregate reports (if enabled) for failure spikes around the time the delay started.
If your domain is managed by a third-party host or outbound tool, ask them what changed in the 48 hours before the delay began.
Look for Bounces, Holds, and Delivery Failures
Gmail delivery delays can be caused by messages failing authentication or hitting policy checks. That often results in a bounce, a “sent but not delivered” situation, or a delayed delivery notification.
- Search for bounce-related mail in your sent folder: in Gmail search, use
newer_than:2dplus common keywords likeDelivery Status NotificationorUndelivered Mail Returned. - Check whether you received any automated failure notices from your mail service.
- If you’re using a mail client that logs delivery status (like some Workspace connectors), review the logs for rejected/queued messages.
If you don’t see bounces, the email may still be in a routing queue or delayed by recipient-side filtering.
Common Triggers That Create Repeat Delivery Delays
- Large attachments: Gmail scans attachments more thoroughly. Very large files can slow initial processing.
- New sending identity: switching from one sending IP/service to another without updating SPF/DKIM often causes delayed or spam routing.
- High send volume: sending many messages in a short window can trigger throttling.
- Client-side rules: filters, forwarders, and category rules can make mail seem “missing.”
- Third-party app permissions: IMAP/SMTP apps with expired tokens can cause inconsistent sync behavior.
Troubleshooting When Messages Still Don’t Arrive
If web search doesn’t show the email and mobile isn’t syncing either, you need a more controlled approach.

Try a controlled test email
- Ask a trusted sender to send a short test message with no attachments to your Gmail address.
- Ask them to send the same message to another mailbox (preferably a second Gmail account).
- Compare results: if the other mailbox receives immediately, your account/filter/settings are the likely culprit.
Switch browsers and networks
- Try Gmail in an incognito/private window on the same device.
- Test a different browser (for example, Chrome vs. Firefox vs. Safari) and disable extensions (ad blockers/privacy scripts) that can interfere with scripts.
- Switch networks (Wi‑Fi vs. cellular) to rule out local routing/DNS issues.
Check storage and sync state
- In Gmail, open Settings → see if you’re near the storage limit (Google storage impacts mail behavior).
- If you use Google Drive heavily, check Drive storage as well.
- On mobile, re-authenticate the account if sync appears stuck (remove and add the account in system settings if needed).
If your account is at/over quota, messages can behave unpredictably—especially for incoming mail and scheduled delivery.

For Google Workspace: review admin-side logs
If you’re on Google Workspace, mail delivery is often observable in admin tooling (and admins can verify routing and compliance filters).
- Open Google Admin Console.
- Check Admin reports or Message Log Search (if your plan includes it).
- Search by sender, recipient, and approximate time window.
- Look for actions like delivered, spam quarantined, rejected, or queued.
This is the fastest path to certainty when a second-day delay happens for multiple users.

While you troubleshoot, you still need the message. Use fast workarounds that don’t depend on the delayed email.
- Ask the sender to re-send from the same system they used originally, then again from a different sending method (different mail tool or SMTP provider).
- Request they include a unique subject line so you can search for it immediately.
- If it’s a billing or password message, use the service’s “resend” flow rather than relying on the stale message.
- Check Spam and “Promotions” categories. Gmail can route certain automated messages there, even when you’ve previously received them in Inbox.
How to Prevent It From Coming Back
Once you identify the cause, prevention is mostly about hygiene and stability.
- Keep filters simple: regularly audit Gmail’s Filters and Blocked Addresses list.
- Use consistent authentication: for any domain you control, maintain correct SPF/DKIM/DMARC and avoid abrupt tooling changes without validation.
- Avoid sudden volume spikes: if you send newsletters or bulk emails, follow a gradual ramp and monitor bounce rates.
- Monitor client sync health: ensure background sync isn’t blocked on mobile by battery optimization.
- Use logs for Workspace: if you’re on Google Workspace, use Message Log Search before guessing.

Does Gmail ever delay emails by 48 hours?
Yes. It can happen during queue backlogs, policy scanning, or when message authentication/reputation signals are in flux. If the same sender’s email reaches another account instantly, the problem is more likely your account or filters.

If I can’t find the email in Gmail search, where is it?
If in:anywhere search doesn’t show it and other mail from the same sender is affected, it likely hasn’t been delivered to your mailbox yet—or it was rejected during routing. In that case, check for bounces from the sender’s mail system.
Why do I see emails on the web but not on my iPhone/iPad?
Usually it’s a sync or background data issue. Confirm Gmail app sync is enabled and that iOS background app refresh (and notifications) aren’t disabled for Gmail.
We use our own domain and still see delays. Should we change SPF/DKIM?
Don’t guess. First verify current DNS records and check whether anything changed around the time delays started (mail provider switch, new sending IPs, selector changes). Then validate with a trusted DNS/DKIM/SPF checker.
Can Gmail filters cause “second day” behavior?
