Galaxy S25 Ultra vs iPhone 18 Pro Max: Which Fits Your Priorities?

The Galaxy S25 Ultra and iPhone 18 Pro Max launched in different years at nearly the same U.S. starting price. Compare their storage, cameras, screens and ecosystems.

The Galaxy S25 Ultra and iPhone 18 Pro Max had nearly identical U.S. launch prices, but they are not same-year rivals: Samsung’s phone went on sale in February 2025, while Apple’s arrived in September 2026. The choice is less about a $0.99 difference in starting price than whether you want Samsung’s built-in S Pen and Android flexibility or Apple’s iOS and MagSafe ecosystem.

Two flagships from different release years

Samsung announced the Galaxy S25 Ultra on January 22, 2025, and general availability began February 7, 2025. Apple announced iPhone 18 Pro Max on September 9, 2026, with availability beginning September 18, 2026. These launch dates matter when comparing a 2025 model with a newer 2026 phone: age, current stock and local offers may differ. Samsung’s launch announcement and Apple’s announcement give the respective release details.

U.S. launch prices and storage options

At launch, the base configurations were separated by just 99 cents in the U.S. That is a historical manufacturer price comparison, not a current October 2026 quote: retail prices, trade-in deals, region, storage and remaining inventory can change what buyers actually pay.

Phone U.S. launch starting price Announced storage tiers
Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra $1,299.99 256GB, 512GB, 1TB
Apple iPhone 18 Pro Max $1,299 256GB, 512GB, 1TB, 2TB

Apple’s U.S. launch prices were $1,499 for 512GB, $1,899 for 1TB and $2,499 for 2TB. Samsung’s cited launch announcement confirms its storage options and starting price, but does not give U.S. launch prices for every higher-capacity version. A complete tier-by-tier price comparison therefore cannot be calculated from these figures.

Display, size and handling

Samsung lists a 6.9-inch QHD+ Dynamic AMOLED 2X screen with a 1–120 Hz refresh rate. Apple measures the iPhone 18 Pro Max display at 6.86 inches as a standard rectangle and notes that its actual viewable area is smaller. The diagonal measurements are close, but they do not establish which screen looks better; resolution, refresh rate, brightness and personal viewing preference also matter.

Samsung lists the S25 Ultra at 77.6 × 162.8 × 8.2 mm and 218 g. A secondary comparison gives the iPhone 18 Pro Max weight as 249 g, but that figure was not present in the Apple specification source used here; verify it against Apple’s current specifications before treating it as settled. Apple’s technical specifications identify the display measurement and IP68 rating.

Camera hardware: different approaches, no proven winner

The S25 Ultra’s listed rear-camera setup comprises a 200-megapixel main camera, 50-megapixel ultrawide, 50-megapixel 5× optical telephoto and 10-megapixel 3× optical telephoto; its front camera is 12 megapixels. The iPhone 18 Pro Max has a 48-megapixel main camera with variable aperture and optical-quality 2× telephoto, according to Apple’s specifications.

These numbers describe hardware, not the quality of real photographs or video. Megapixel counts and zoom labels alone do not show how cameras perform in low light, motion, portrait work or video, and no controlled head-to-head camera test is established here. Compare independent results made under similar conditions if camera performance is decisive for you.

Battery and charging: figures are not a head-to-head test

Samsung specifies a typical 5,000 mAh battery and describes charging with a 45 W adapter. Apple publishes battery-life claims based on its own preproduction-device testing. Those are different kinds of information, so they do not establish which phone lasts longer in comparable everyday use. No independent matched-protocol endurance result is available here; avoid choosing a battery winner from capacity or manufacturer claims alone.

The S25 Ultra runs Android with Samsung’s One UI and includes a built-in S Pen. That combination is a practical differentiator if you want to write or mark up content directly on the screen or prefer Android. Samsung’s launch announcement describes the S Pen and Galaxy S25 platform.

iPhone 18 Pro Max

Apple highlights iOS 27, Apple Intelligence and MagSafe accessories. Apple says Siri AI is rolling out as a beta, and that feature availability varies by region and language. Check local availability before treating an AI feature as part of your expected experience. MagSafe is relevant if you already use compatible accessories or want to build around Apple’s accessory system.

  • Choose the S25 Ultra if a built-in S Pen, Android and Samsung’s One UI suit how you work, and its available storage tiers meet your needs.
  • Choose the iPhone 18 Pro Max if you prefer iOS, want to use MagSafe accessories, or need the announced 2TB storage tier.
  • Compare current local prices before buying. The launch starting prices were nearly identical, but they are not a guide to current offers or same-capacity transaction prices.
